Has anyone had the yellow fever vaccination before going to Vietnam/Cambodia?

Did you take malaria tabs? What's the best place in DXB to get it?

I did a search, wondering if there are recent/newer experiences. TIA

We have just been this summer and took malaria tablets for both countries. However, our friends from another country were told only to take them in time for going to the temples at Siem Reap. We took malarone. It is ridiculously expensive over here - AED600 per box of 12 and you need two days before you travel and a week after you have left the malaria area. We actually ended up getting ours from an online pharmacy from the UK and getting them delivered to a friend who brought them out for us. It wasn't much more than AED600 for two of us for three weeks supply! plus the docs bill of 500dhs to give you the prescription in the first place

cambodia is very malaria country.... a little bit in the middle along the main river is low risk.... but i still dont take the chance especially my kids as a grown up i will make sure that i put the spray on when it is required, i cannot be sure that my kids will do so... in fact my oldest didnt the last time he went to vietnam, he did it the once didnt like it so didnt spray anymore... luckily he was taking malarone so no worries on that front... unlike a lot of the other kids... obviously their parents are just not bothered about their health etc.

I have read a lot on the net so definitely not getting mefloquine (spelling?) Sakhifa, thanks for sharing the links, very useful wouldnt get mefloquine, plus i think a lot of those countries are actually immune to it. doxychcline is fine, my mum has had that when going to ghana, my boy couldnt have it because of issues with his kidneys, and so we had to go with malarone which is fine to take. i checked with my doc here and he said stay away from larim, the side effects are terrible. when i did my research into this 2 years ago, in auh they didnt have it, the only place that i found it was american hospital and it would cost 500dhs for the doctor to write the prescription and then they priced it per tablet, so it was going to be near 200 pounds, if you go to dr fox then its much less, you have to pay delivery and prescription charges, and they only do it for like a week at a time, so if you are going for 9 days as my boys are you have to buy 2 weeks worth etc, so its cheaper if you club together as another poster will have done because you will not have to pay the prescription fee or delivery twice and the cost of the tablets will be less, i will have some left over.

I went to Vietnam in 2010 and just got back from Cambodia a couple of weeks ago and didn't take malaria tablets and am abseloutley fine :) I had to have Yellow Fever to go to Tanzania a while ago so was covered for that already but I wasn't asked for any documentation for it in either Vietnam or Cambodia. Unless you're heading to the rural/delta areas, as some of teh otehr ladies have said I don't believe they are high risk. Both amazing countries- enjoy your trip :)

Thanks Pollydxb1, I have an appointment at DLC tomorrow for something else, will ask them about malaria and vaccination. My insurance doesn't cover it either. Sorry for a silly question but... did you have to book an appointment with a GP first? Seems that we won't need a yellow fever jabs.. at least that's the info I get on the internet. If anyone else has had any recent experiences, do share it, please none of it will be covered, always had to pay for extras, such as hep b or hep a and typhoid. you will find that typhoid there is a world shortage and may not be available, malaria pills read up on them first to see which one will be suitable, larim can be very nasty side affects. also be aware that some vaccinations you need to do for a month beforehand etc. my son went on a trip to vietnam, he had the deet spray but didnt like it so didnt use it, but i was prepared and he was taking the malaria pills malarone which are very expensive but have the less side affects if you get any. a lot of people go to these countries and dont have the vaccines and hence why there is more of a problem.

you dont need yellow fever for vietnam, suspect the same for cambodia. vaccinations for vietnam you should have typhoid and hep a and malaria pills. vietnam is a low/medium risk and high risk in the highlands and in the delta area.

I did not take either for my recent trip to Vietnam, nor did I have to provide proof of any vaccinations. Have a look here: http://wwwnc.cdc.gov/travel/destinations/traveler/none/vietnam http://wwwnc.cdc.gov/travel/destinations/traveler/none/cambodia "There is no risk of yellow fever in Vietnam. The government of Vietnam/Cambodia requires proof of yellow fever vaccination only if you are arriving from a country with risk of yellow fever "

TIA I had all my vaccinations at DLC in Festival City - really helpful, pretty much all clinic's will offer the service, but not all medical insurers will cover the cost. I know mine won't annoyingly
