Why do people on here feel they have the right to judge when they have no idea of the circumstances behind the original question?! Unfortunately I have no idea re the answer to the question, there maybe information on line?

Hi good luck with the move, as someone has said, be very clear on the housing allowance before confirming your package! Re schools, you definitely want to start looking at schools way before you move here, places are very hard to come by, having said that new schools are opening all the time. The school will have a big bearing on where you want to live or you could end up spending all day in the car stuck in traffic jams, and driving here is not pleasant! I would suggest that with children of your ages you would want to look at community living, ie Ranches, The Villa, Falcon City, Springs, and if close to your school of choice your children will have friends close by. Jumeirah is lovely, very central. Depending on how long you intend to stay here one other thing to bear in mind re schooling is to try and look at primary schools that feed into their own secondary school, securing secondary places can be a bit of a nightmare, and then, if you are looking that far ahead, check out if the school offers A levels or IB depending or your preference. I know that seems way of and you may not be intending to stay that long, but trust me time flies!!! best of luck.

Glad you passed, one bit of advice my husband gave me before I started driving here, check all mirrors, check all directions, check the area you least expect a car to come from - twice, keep doing that constantly and you will be fine!! Good luck!

Hi Thinkpad, schools won't close but hours will be reduced, they will start school slightly later and finish earlier. Exams will still be taking place but schools will accommodate this.

Hi, unless you physically took out named insurance and paid for it then there is no cover. The visit visa does not incorporate health insurance as previous poster says. There is one possibility, they may hold a credit card that covers them, some credit cards give travel insurance as a perk and it is only written up in the small print....worth checking as a last resort! edited by kss on 19/02/2015

DESC has an excellent reputation and if you get a place there I wouldn't hesitate, it is very well established and several of my friends have got, and have had very happy children there, so although no personal experience I would definitely say it is a good choice. Best of luck, it is such a stressful time!

Hi Tulip, I noticed you haven't had any replies yet re schools in September....I don't personally know either school but had experience of DS joining a brand new school which wasn't great! However, GEMS are a very 'well oiled machine' and know what they are doing, that would be all I could offer, other than at this point you may have to grab any year 7 place available, they are usually at a premium in Dubai and is a bit of a fight to gain a place!! Having said that there are lots of new schools opening so it may be a little better now. Good luck, go with your 'gut feeling'.

Hi, I don't think there will be any closures this year, last year was an exception as they were going for a record attempt with the firework display which caused them to close off The Palm. Prior to last year there had never been a closure on New Years Eve, I also don't think, I might be wrong, but I don't think there is a Sandance so there shouldn't be all that traffic to contend with either. Enjoy the fireworks. Happy New Year!

Hi, it is a debate we as a family have been through several times! We have lived here nearly 20 years now and all 3 kids have grown up in Dubai, we moved here when DD was 4 and DS 2, youngest was born here. At each academic milestone, ie secondary, gcse's, a levels, we went through the same debate! In the end we decided to remain here and keep the kids at school here, DD went to Uni in the UK 4 years ago, (RG although not sure that is too important, it depends more on what course they want to study - however that will spark up a whole new thread....), DS 2 years ago, both adjusted to living in the UK very easily. (Both got home status by the way, as did most of their friends, due to the fact we can never be permanent residents here, again that will start up another thread off topic!) Both of them had part time jobs here as they gained coaching certificates in their chosen sports and worked part time at weekends and evenings whilst studying for gcse's and a levels - hard going but was a reality check as far as pocket money was concerned, they had to earn 'extra' for their own treats etc. As far as having help at home and a reality check, on a personal level that depends on how it works in the family. My kids had to keep their room tidy and cook for themselves now and again, walk the dogs etc, just as we would have done with them in the UK. Peer pressure can be harder here, its a case of keeping their feet on the ground. As far as being 'street wise' our kids were a lot wiser on certain levels, living abroad and consequently all the travelling we all do, seeing different cultures etc just does that naturally....in certain areas they had to catch up..it was pointed out to DD that she should really not be wearing flip flops to a rugby match in October by her friends at uni!! But basically they catch on fast and we have noticed that the confidence they have gained from growing up here in Dubai certainly more than compensates for the lack of some basic knowledge at home in the UK. Safety and crime wise I certainly feel Dubai is generally safer...Schools cannot offer as much in the way of sport or choices, but on a personal level I feel they do a reasonable job. At the end of the day it all boils down to personal circumstances and choice, there are going to be pluses and minuses whichever way you choose. Our kids have enjoyed growing up here, the eldest 2 love being back in the UK for uni but also love coming 'home' for their holidays, they feel they have the best of both worlds. Best of luck with your decision, it is a personal one for your family and circumstances, on the whole we are very pleased we have been able to stay here and educate the kids here.

Hi, this isn't really a present that will remind him of Dubai but when both my eldest left Dubai to go to Uni in the UK, one of the things they both enjoyed was a 'shower radio'! It was a last minute throw in present that they both found really great - ridiculous really but it just hooks on the shower, very inexpensive.

Sorry, one further thing that has just come back to me, I am sure that fairly recently I saw a post on face book from a British girl who was looking for her brother here in Dubai who had lost his job and was living rough and she hadn't been able to get in contact with him, it was either on face book or in the paper, I am struggling to remember but it wasn't that long ago, maybe a month.....I am going to try and search for it now but I remember it was a fairly desperate plea.... I have just found the article in the National from Jan 21, it seems as though he was found as he made contact via fb but not very clear......just a thought!

Hi Irishkate, it does sound incredibly unusual here, and as you have said he sounds as though he has mental issues, poor man...Have you considered reporting it properly to the authorities? It may be that they know of 'persons missing', i know recently we had a an elderly tourist who wandered off and couldn't initially be found, luckily the authorities found him and reunited him with his wife, I would definitely report you sighting to the police so that they can investigate properly, just to be sure. It can't do any harm, you may already have done so in which case I apologise for the suggestion! But your instinct obviously has picked up on something not quite right about it all.

I agree totally with Pinks, this isn't a 'diet' as such, it is a way of eating and the weight loss is a side issue, watch the program. Re putting all the weight back on - if you lose weight with any change of eating plan you are going to regain it if you return to your old eating habits! That was the reason you put weight on in the first place, there is no magic solution. The 6;1 is a very good way of maintaining it. All down to personal choice and circumstances - good luck to those starting Sunday!

You have to use a very small teaspoon for the 1oz of porridge, lol! It really isn't much to eat but you just have to tell yourself its only for a day....I found my appetite decreased as well on the non fast days, food tastes so much nicer (you appreciate it so much....!) It obviously doesn't suit everyone, my sister just cannot get to grips with it, but I feel better on it. It is a personal thing, I love getting to Wednesday knowing I have 'done' my dieting until the following Sunday!

Sunday and Tuesday work for me, after trying various ways last year I find the best thing for me personally,( and everyone is different.....), is to wait as long as possible before eating at all! I normally eat a t 2pm and 7pm on 'fasting days', I do drink tea....can't give that up! But I add in the calories from the milk, 500 cal total on those 2 days. Am not very adventurous with menu's, so nothing too major in my instance, 1 oz of porridge with 100grm soya milk as lunch, beans or an egg on 1 slice toast for tea, or chicken and some salad, anything really that adds up to 500 cals and save the 'bigger' meal for your hungriest time...during the rest of the week I'm reasonably careful and relax totally on Fri/Sat. Fairly simple really, and it really worked for me. Best of luck.

I have been doing this since middle of January, with a couple of weeks off over the Easter break, I 'fast' Sunday and Tuesday and it has just become a habit now, I look forward to the Sunday fast after the weekend, I feel much better for it, have lost 10kg and am hoping my cholesterol has come down! Very easy, best thing I have ever done, and believe me, I have tried most 'diets'!!

Best of luck! Stick with it and let the guilt go...I think you end up with a far healthier relationship with food. I have been doing this since Jan and have now lost 6kg, the most interesting thing is that on 'non fast' days I have no desire to eat like crazy and I find I'm automatically choosing healthier options. For years, and I mean years, I have always felt guilty when eating and consequently ate more than ever! Now I'm much more relaxed about it, if hungry I will eat but more often than not am happy to wait until meal times and not snack etc. It isn't a fast weight loss regime but it is staying off, and slowly going down even though I'm not 'dieting', amazing!!!!

Hi, I suspect you are suffering from 'dry eyes', which will slow the recovery a bit, your eyes will be blurry until this settles down, if it is that. I has 'Supracor' last Feb which is another form of Lasix, it just corrects long/mid and short distance (had it done in the UK as not available here) and it involved cutting 'the flap' etc but I suffered with dry eye and it took a while to clear, I was advised to use eye drops, the ones without preservative in, basically water to moisten the eyes and to take flaxseed oil as this really helps with dry eye when you suffer from it. It will sort itself out eventually and the result is fantastic! Good luck.
