I have noticed some small things missing from my rooms or grocery, example pens (packed from grocery, chewing gums, deodorant etc.. generally my house maid is good and manages all the house requirements quite decently. recently she fell sick and i entered her room to give her some water and food and as i was leaving i noticed that some small things, like my hair clips were in her room and some of my toiletries (as they are not the usual brands she uses and its the one i use) and air freshener etc that i bring for the house was in her room. i didnt react that time as she was not well. FYI: she gets a proper separate toiletries allowance every month I really don't know how to confront and ask her, as these are petty things but, my clips or toiletries - why would she assume that its ok for her to use them without even asking me once....I understand its ok to take something which is common example food stuff etc.. i feel its a matter of principle but really dont know the best way to confront it. please suggest some ideas to deal with this?

I can see that some maids get uncomfortable with acting as waitresses. I believe there are companies you can hire service staff for home parties. Certainly! i wouldnt expect my maid to help cater to parties at all. if i need someone it has to be from the agency for such tasks! the question was merely about a friend (singly person) coming over and offering a glass of water or making a cuppa tea - i dont think i would have an issue to do that at all... i generally would check in my office with anyone (boss or peer) if they would like a cup of tea if im going to make one for myself... this query was really not about refilling drinks or serving food or expecting the maid to be a waitress... if anything i really like my privacy with guests and would not appreciate her to be active there... i just wanted some opinions on how to say it.. thats all!

i guess this conversation is steering off in a completely different direction... like probably all discussions about maids do! i guess i got some good points from the previous posters.. and thank you very much for that this query was all about how to say what you need (in reasonable affirmative way) and not about cringing over something or someone not allowed to say they are unwell... we all do and we all are very very compassionate - hence this query in the first place. no one is inhuman to ask anyone to work if they are unwell - this query was about addressing timings and guests which happens extremely rare in our case! please lets not take this discussion in any other way than its supposed to be! Thank you

its absolutely ridiculous! Villas in lakes are now old and need a lot more maintenance - PERIOD! (except the newly built ones) so many of them are vacant for over a month now but the agents will just not budge - its strange that the landlords are ok to leave the villa empty for over 30-60 days but not start out on a decent rent! why do they control the market in such an artificial way!

kitkat89 Palm and life here is amazing.. we love it... we have been here for over two years... Buildings you may want to consider Oceana/Tiara (with beach access) definitely the best with lounge/cafes inside the building almost like a lovely resort lifestyle , but slightly steep Marina Residences really nice with good finish and well maintained community with great views. Golden Mile: amazing finish too and close to the park however no gym and pool access - also if you choose something facing the main road - you will only see construction Shoreline: only good thing is access to beach - but very bad finish and maintainence...not the best choice although cheaper than the rest... take into consideration the chiller cost and housing fee (however this you will have to pay even in JLT and some places in Marina Traffic: absolutely negligible.......... i have never ever got stuck so far except 31st Dec 2013 when the roads were blocked... Groceries: there are small marts /pharmacies etc that deliver.... Overall worth the money... lovely place..Goodluck with your search...

We are considering to invest in dubai on our own house rather than paying high rents every year... is it a good time to buy or we should wait a couple of months?

Natural medicine: bonnison by himalaya - very good all natural -- if baby is older than 5/6 months: (helps constipation too) Soak: 1. make your own tea- baby camomile tea and soaked fennel seeds do wonders 2.Prunes and figs (seperate or together) overnight - de-seed and steam - use paste with any food. babies love it as its nice n sweet

and then i wonder.. there are several families who can afford to give 3k plus to maids, spoil them with expensive gifts and bonus, funnily now the trends are - no maids room but a proper room which means rent increase etc and two maids sometimes... i wishhh i could .. its beyond me how people afford it - especially the rents + housing fees for over 200k!

I absolutely agree and stress on the fact that we should have nanny cams - i had a bad experience with my nanny and literally sent her home within hours. THANKS to the cam! Cams do not stop bad experiences but it does two things: one makes the nanny more vigilant and secondly if something has happened you know of it rather sooner than later especially when your baby cannot communicate to you dragon mart ones are old models - try to get foscam - very good!

Late evenings should be your maids personal time, no matter how short her working days are, or how many days she gets off. You should pay her extra for babysitting, especially at the times you mention. Thanks Oopsiedaisy.. how much would it be per hour?

In my view, a house maid can do aa very responsible job of looking after children and doing housework, exactly like a woman would do if she did not have paid help in the home. You would be able to expect a 'professional job' from a Nanny, as she would have been trained, but surely we all realise that there is training and there is Training! Above all, it is important to trust the person who cares for your child. If you do not, then how can you possibly leave them together? A baby will not really understand who is pushing them in a pram. When he/she is old enough to realize, then it is more important to be the one who is there. Remember, a working mother cannot be there to do it all- that is the trade off. You are working to help to secure the future of the child, and you need peace of mind while you are away from the home. edited by Pink Lily on 14/11/2014 Thank you Pink Lily, for sharing your views. I have convinced myself that is should be ok. Not sure why the post had to become a debate ground on the definition of nanny/maid. My main concerns were only because i have seen some nannies not being careful with the children and that was the main reason for me to be worried since i am not around that time to go and check. Thank you once again

Thank you for helping me get my head around this... i agree with BellaUK, i love it that Bath and Bed time is just 'Our thing'... i feel sad that i miss even feeding my baby most of his meals or his reactions to different tastes and have to rely on what my nanny shares (sad part of being a working mum) the reason i am a bit apprehensive is also because i didnt have a great experience with my previous nanny and had to let her go immediately. i have certainly entrusted my baby with the new one however going out would mean - she starts chatting with security etc making it more accessible for dating ... i guess im thinking a bit too much.... :(

She loves anything that makes crinkly sounds as well now, like the Lamaze toys, rattles etc. She loves the jumperoo. Thanks BellaUK - ill check it out. where do you get the soft mats?

Don't get me wrong, but I am hoping that the 'maid' you have hired for your 7 months baby is a 'nanny' and not just a house help kind of maid. I have read about many terrible instances on this forum about 'maids' taking complete care of babies (I got uncomfortable to read that she is alone with your baby during the day). Please consider that if she is not a properly trained 'nanny' she is not equipped for taking care of your child. Her internet and phone usage is next point altogether when compared to this. edited by Rucha13 on 02/11/2014 Hi Rucha13, she is trained nanny and has work ex too. i am very careful as i had a really bad experience with previous one and we cancelled her visa on the same day and sent her back immediately. we also have cams (sadly) as i am quite worried to leave my baby alone any more..

Joke or not, it's a very realistic list of duties for a maid, except perhaps for the shoe bit! If the maid's working eight hours a day, five days a week, most of these chores will only take a few minutes as you're only touching up something that's already pretty clean. My maid has a similar list and she does it all in under eight hours a day. wow Tallybalt, you have a gem of a maid :) .. touchwood!.. this time around im going lower my expectations/set a basic schedule and let it grow on her ;)

http://www.accessoreezbazaar.co.uk/ - the owner is a lovely lady who has some great suppliers (a lot of her stock is v similar to what you'd find at Topshop/ASOS etc, but at a fraction of the price). I'm sure she'd happily ship to the UAE - just drop her an email. I've bought some great statement necklaces from her in the past. looks lovely! thank you mrs13b :)

Certain items from the Simply Vera by Vera Wang label (Kohls in US, also an Australian dept store sells it); things from llbean.com; clothes from debenhams site; nursing bras from momsmilkboutique.com. I use the sizing guides and have someone else take my measurements prior to ordering. Hi Apricot - some lovely clothing by Simply Vera at Kohls but looks like you need a US billing address to order. Am not an experienced online clothes shopper but thought I might give it a try - how do you order without a UK or US billing address? Hi Desert Mum - try post a plus (cheaper) or shop and ship

hmmm. well we sent her home immediately didnt want to do any police case etc. we were just too terrified and the first thing we thought was not to keep her anywhere close to the baby. i wouldnt imagine anyone else to go through the experience. We will be putting the regular UAE ban then, but thinking are there any other forums/places that i should write about her - so that the potential employer can choose to get in touch with us before they plan to recruit.

SurviveDubai we have got these excellent HD cameras from Eros Digital - FOSCAM - there are a few options AED 300 onwards - the best part of these cams is its POE (power over ethernet) the basic one records images and the advanced one records small videos based on movement. you can zoom in zoom out - listen clearly and talk through them, see on your laptop/smart phone, move them around through your smart phone app and its got infrared wide lens so even captures slightest of movement in extreme darkness. the only thing i dont know is how many cams are good enough - i have one in the kitchen and main areas and our bedroom but not in the bath hallway and other bedrooms - should i consider placing it there?
