Try couchsurfing.com too, maybe someone has a spare room to offer you and you get to stay with Italians!

definitely look at airbnb... great website... and lets you pick places by location, facilities, amenities and price!

Have you thought about trying AirBnB? My brother used it in Spain and London and raved about it. There was a thread about it not so long ago with lots of very positive recommendations. It is much cheaper than a hotel.
