I also moved here a couple of months ago after being in Dubai for fours years and I'm still not used to the fact that everything is so freaking expensive, it's ridiculous. The Singapore forum for expatwoman is dead but there is a good fb group called Real Singapore Expat Wives that's as good as it gets in terms of info. Having a car is also very expensive so it's better if you live close to work/school or MRT stop. I'd suggest you to avoid buses if you can as drivers are a disaster and half of the time you'll be praying for your life :( I wouldn't know about kids schools prices as I don't have any and I certainly won't have them here, but from what I heard the best way to go is to enroll them in a local school. Happy to help with more info if needed!

Oh nice to see there are some of us here as well. I have just arrived so I don't know much about attractions but have you been to Sentosa? Apparently is really cool there, especially for kids. I am trying to find us an apartment to live as we are in a temporary place at the moment, we want something central. Can you share your house searching tips with me? How do you find prices in general? I find everything so expensive compared to Dubai!

Can't believe they're renovating, again. Anyways, after the second renovation it lost all the charm and the realness it had, not to mention that the quality of the food dropped as the prices went higher. So I don't even want to imagine how's going to be when it re-opens again.

If you are looking for something more in the line of fine dining then Magnolia is lovely http://www.timeoutdubai.com/restaurants/reviews/873-magnolia however check it's still there! I thought Magnolia was closed and that they were doing private events only now, is that not the case anymore?

To be honest, i wouldn't bother. It has been well published in the press and there are big signs saying that the speed limit has changed. For residents maybe but not for tourists unfortunately. was she driving your car or a hire car? A rental car. I don't have a car and I don't drive here. edited by pmd on 13/08/2014

Resident or not, ignorance of the law does not mean it doesn't apply. If she was exceeding the speed limit (yes, I'm assuming that), then I don't see why she should appeal it. Have you been around al sufouh road recently? The road changes almost on a daily basis and for a tourists that has to be paying attention not only to the signs but also to the crazy drivers in the street is a bit difficult. Apparently the speed limit is 60 and she was driving at 70.

Hi ladies, I am looking for an apartment to rent for a very short time (August 30th to Sept 10) as I need to leave the place I am renting at the moment and would only stay in Dubai for a very short period after that but I don't want to stay in a hotel apartment. I've already checked justrentals but they don't answer calls or e-mails. Is anyone going away on hols and willing to sublet their place?

pmd, you're changing the subject and taking the onus away from what is a criminal offense! To say you wish something bad on someone because of whom they support - makes you no better IMHO and it's opinions like that, which fuel the hatred and keep it going. IF you're really serious about it, then go on - chuck out EVERYTHING made by, supporting etc and you would have nothing left. Can't do it though hey. To be honest I'm sick to the back teeth of people doing this, on newspaper articles etc keep these comments where they belong - on relevant posts. Why it has to be black or white? Unfortunately my computer has Intel components but it's very hard to find computers without such components. On the other hand, I can live without VS underwear. I think everyone can do something from their side. FYI. I never said I wished something bad on someone because of whom they support. I just said that seeing someone stealing from them did not make me feel as bad as if I'd seen someone stealing from an 'ethical' brand.

The problem with reporting anything here is that you immediatly become involved. Having recently seen a situation escalate while I was in hospital, police and hospitals authorities involved as someone alleged their mother had been treated disrespectfully, I would be very frightened to say a word against anyone these days and I am an incredibly law abiding person. Beware! Trouble with that is, if everyone turns a blind eye, then what does it do to society? People just end up doing what they want. If the guy that owns the company supports the zionist cause, then I don't think I care that much: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wexner_Foundation Urgh really?! How about you keep politics out of it. Well you might as well throw every electronic device you have away then because so do IBM and Intel and I bet my bottom dollar you're using a computer with parts from those companies!!!! edited by FairyDust on 27/07/2014 In my opinion keeping politics out of it is worst than turning a blind eye.

From my experience in renting cars in Europe, it's better to rent it and return it to the same place, otherwise the fee for the drop off in a different country is too high. You can check in all the major rental companies websites.

yes. Do you let her stay out at the weekends? IF you do,perhaps monitor her social media - as this doesn't sound like the behavoiur of a happily married woman. And how is a happily married woman supposed to dress and behave? She's 36 - not 60! well taking selfies and posting on all sorts of social media is the behaviour of someone wanting / needing lots of attention... for sure she will be getting it at the weekends if you let her walk around looking like a hooker. And who are you to judge how people dress??? Please, live and let live! naive, how people dress is judged and live and let live has no place in the world of employees. It's regarding how she dresses in her OFF time. edited by pmd on 23/07/2014

But many of those that you are talking about would be working in the slums in third world countries - not the west. It is convenient and not to mention somewhat arrogant to lump every "worker" into one category but that is seldom accurate. There are many workers here such as waiters, drivers and so on who never lived in a slum and have reasonable homes and life back home. The reason they move here is because there are no jobs and so they would rather work here than be unemployed. They sacrifice their living standards and trade living with their family to sharing a room with 4 or 6 others in order to earn and send money. again would not be ABLE to work in the west; which was the point i was making - these people ARE mainly from the thirld world. FYI. They are called developing countries these days!

I don't wish to burst anyone's bubble here but like it or not if you are a resident here you benefit from in some way or turn a blind eye to any under the rug goings on because you KNOW you do not have a voice to fight them yet remain here anyway because you need the job yourself. And anyone who says otherwise is lying to themselves. The only people who can rightfully say it is not done wrong, it is bad, are those who say so as they sit in another country and refuse to come. There is the thumb down option so you can further be in denial. But if you have a resident visa… you are on board with everything here, like it or lump it you sold your values for the job that brought you here. edited by Londiamond on 22/07/2014 I think that all of us expats, of all races and religions and all walks of life, have come here for a better standard of living and more money. Everything is relative in terms of what is a better standard of living depending on where the expat comes from... This is such a generalization though, I'd be making more money, have a better job and a better standard of living in my country than here, but I came here because I wanted to see the world and Dubai is a very good hub. Now that I've run out of places to visit, I'm ready to leave Dubai. So no, not everyone is here to make money!
