Jet lagged? Funny, because most of the pilots I know are out on the p*ss all the time - that's why they're flippin' tired. Too much parting - the single ones anyway. Long haul is a drag, but on many flights, they now have heavy crews that rotate during the flight, plus let's face it - autopilot, auto lands etc etc. I know a husband and wife team, both pilots on the A380 fleet, they really are passing planes in the night. Humped and Dumped by a Pilot then! LOL

Ok ladies.....I am sorry your contracts are shi# and Emirates people get housing and school fees! I don't know what to do, I can't help it, I actually wasn't whinning about pay and conditions, I was explaining how exhausted and jet lagged the Pilots are in response to the thread!! I appreciate everything I have and appreciate the contract we have! Like us if your not happy here leave! Life is to short to be unhappy as SueB says! Move back to your home country send your kids to the local school and pay reasonable rent by the month and live stress free!

Sorry to hear that Buddha, your contract sounds sh#t!! I just have to ask.....why on earth are you here then?? I honestly feel bad for you.....we even legally and happily had to pay our house maid a trip back to her home country every 2 years!! However we paid for her to go back every year! If your on a International contract it is a labour law to pay for you to return to your home country every 2 years at least. I would check that if you are on a International Contract, I have school teacher friends that get a full ticket paid for to there home country. I understand if you signed a contract here in Dubai and are on a local contract you don't get a ticket. Actually even the ladies at the nail salon get a ticket home, I was speaking to one of them the other day as she was going home to see her kids.

If you are coming on a International contract wouldn't you go over the contract with a fine tooth comb and make sure school fee's were allowed for, accommodation etc? My friends that are non Emirates all say they get an allowance for schools and accommodation but it just comes in there salary? So they do get the allowances it just isn't paid directly to the school by the company? But because Emirates pay's it directly it seems people seem to think we are on a better deal? Also isn't it the law here you have to get accommodation or an allowance? So much to be grateful for, like I said, appreciate it all and always will, I am a positive person, but do get sick of people saying Emirates wives and husbands are a bunch of whiners and we should be grateful etc. It is not our fault your company doesnt pay school fee's etc again part of our salary package!!!! So while I understand people are envious of our "package" it may just be better bundled than other companies due to the large amount of employee's? There is good and bad in everyone's contracts anywhere in the world, I would think you would find out if school fee's and accommodation were included before I signed anything anywhere. Maybe your salaries are higher in monthly terms as it is included? A First Officer at Emirates is on 25,000 a month to start, so he then gets an apartment if no kids and if he has kids he gets a villa (you get told where to live) then Emirates pay a percentage of the school fee's and you cover the rest. I am sure your salaries are alot higher to cover the rent and school fees (western) up to 3 children. FO's get a family ticket in economy to there home country once a year (which I think is the law) yes we get staff travel, which should be a perk of the job if you are in the industry. But it isn't as cheap as you would think and the last time I used standby I waited 10 days at the airport to get to Australia. So not as glamorous as you would think..... So to sum it up I guess, everyone thinks everyone else is on a better package, grass is not always greener your packages I am sure have good and bad. Also if you leave Emirates before 5 years you have to pay the company $50,000 (150,000 dhs)

No disrespect to you SueB and thanks for your kind words, however I presume and I apologise if I am wrong, but I think you came to Emirates many, many years ago when things were amazing, pay was incredible, hours were reasonable, annual leave whenever you asked.. If is different now especially with young kids on a FO salary, not just Emirates I am talking everyone in Dubai, rents are enormous, food is expensive, nappies, etc and cars well, what do you do when you first get here? You have to buy one? So of course you have to get a loan, most people come here because they have lost there jobs elsewhere so of course they can't come debt free. It is easy for us to "judge" people on there situation when we were here for the golden years when everything was easy! I feel sorry for the people with young kids and struggling to keep it together, how about some compassion instead of a lecture about living within there means. Imagine having young kids and your husband is away all the time, you don't know anyone, your living in a strange country with different cultures etc, expat's are different now, when I first moved here, you were welcomed with open arms especially on this forum, now you get slapped down and told you are ungrateful if you even mention you are doing it tough. Imagine after your husband finally comes home all you want to do is talk to him and as you say be kind and a wonderful wife, he is so exhausted he snaps at you and goes off to bed, would make you feel pretty lonely I think. Again it is not the pay the Pilots I know whinge about, it is the hours and exhaustion and lack of annual leave to recover and spend time with your family, as at the end of the day family is what matters, also remember the new joiners now have a bond to pay for 3 years or is it 5 years? So hard for them to just up and leave if they are so miserable. Please this world needs more compassion not judgement. Empathy and kindness goes a long way.

Well said Rickadon!!! We have been here 11 years, appreciate everything we have, always will. Just a few years ago the Pilots were doing on average 65 hours a month flight time (different to work time) now they do 95 to 100 hours flight time a month, over time was cut from there pay so effectively they got a pay cut, you now have to work 90 hours to get overtime. Would your husband be happy with that? Keep in mind they fly nights while your husband is tucked up in bed and gets a full nights rest, keep in mind the Pilots are constantly exhausted with jet lag (again part of the job) however when we signed up it was 65 hours flight time and more days to recover from the jet lag. You try flying to Sydney and back with 24 hours rest come back have 2 "days off" and fly to Europe and the cycle begins yes we know they are International Pilots but again there days off have halved and hours doubled for the same pay effectively. Keep in mind we signed a contract which is constantly changed without consent. There are many positives about working for Emirates, yes we get staff travel, I see that as a privilege and not a right, I appreciate that so very much, yes we get a percentage of our school fee's paid however that is part of our salary package, yes we get accommodation again part of our salary package. No one is disputing any of this. There are on average 3 pilots resigning a week, I am talking highly qualified with a huge amount of hours and experience that are going to other airlines, Emirates loss. The reason, exhaustion, frustration, lack of days of to spend with family and ever changing rules. Have you ever had to deal with a husband that is so jetlaged and exhausted that he can barely string 2 words together and when he is home his one day a week he is either studying for his sim exam (yes thats right they have sim exams and if you fail twice you get fired) or doing errands we can't do as wives as everything is in his name. Never used to be like this, that is what they whinge about!!! Not about stupid discounts and whether our backyards are the size of a car! We want just what we signed up for. It is ok if you sit in a air conditioned office and have an hours lunch break everyday and get a full nights sleep every single night. Try flying thru monsoons, storms, ice storms, war zones, in the middle of the night when you have had barely enough sleep to drive a car safely, try being responsible for 400 people. After flying thru the night, try landing and then having a 2 hour bus ride in peak traffic in Moscow, yep being going now for about 12 hours, you then get to your hotel and try to find familiar food and count how many hours you can sleep before doing it all over again. Again yes life of a Pilot, but what we are saying is it is not all 50% discounts at everywhere in Dubai (wish I knew this as this is news to me) we are saying our husbands and Pilots are exhausted and have had enough and in answer to your question, yes we are leaving, yes our friends are leaving as we can't possibly live like this for the next however many years. Why would we put up with living in the Middle East away from family, friends etc when we can get better contracts in our home country. Before you jump down my throat, think about the last time your husband missed 8 nights sleep for his job, when did he have to sit a 2 day exam once a year to keep his job, when did he have to pass a medical once a year to keep his job, when was the last time he missed family gatherings, Christmas, Easter, anniversary's and everyones Birthdays? When was the last time your husband was so exhausted that he fell asleep in the school car park picking his kids up from school as he had'nt seen them in 9 days! Yes we will "jog along now"

It depends which department. Some department is 3 days on 3 days off but usually called for ot. Some are 2 morning 2 nights. Or office hours. In her original post she mentions he is on the 777 and wants to know days away etc....so presume he is a Pilot not a office worker.

If it is that terrible why are those of you who are so miserable still here ? I am sincerely asking as I am unfamiliar with the contracts , etc. Can't you relocate to your home countries ? Asia? Many airlines are hiring. It just does not seem worth it to be so miserable Yes it makes us wonder, seriously. I knew that the EK cabin crew leave a lot to be desired these days but the pilots and families don't like the terms here, like seriously, jog along. Good news is that soon they will replace all expat pilots with Emiratis. I presume this is your attempt at sarcasam? Maroosh is that you under a different user name?? hahahaha, clearly you have NO idea what you are talking about and clearly not a Pilot or married to one. Funniest post I have seen in a long time. No need to go to pprune as this thread is way better!

Australia is a very expensive place to bring up a family, but I presume you did your research before applying for a visa?? Obviously country and rural area's are much cheaper for housing than the major cities, but again depends on what job you do I guess. Obviously tax in Australia is high not sure what benefits you are entitled to but Australia seem to hand them out to anybody and then tax the people who work high paying jobs. Cost of living is much higher than here (except rent) water, rates, electricity, phone, internet, cars, fuel and food all much more than here. Once your child reaches 5 they are entitled to a free public school education but you will pay a huge amount before that in child care if you work, maybe again do your research by contacting child care centres in Australia where you intend on living, a simple google search will do the trick! I don't know what your visa is, but I presume it entitles you to medicare, the Australian health care system, again a simple google search will answer many questions as it does change as often as we change Prime Ministers.... As for looking for a job, I would apply once you get there and get settled as far as I know, you will have to attend interviews etc and companies in Australia would prefer to meet you face to face rather than a Skype call etc. Also I would be getting my child settled first before I begin to look for a job and also get a child care centre sorted first. Australia does not obviously have access to cheap house maids and nannies like here. What you pay here an hour in dhs for a maid service you will pay in $ in Australia if not more, 11 years ago in Australia I was paying 120 dhs an hour for a cleaning lady. Any way good luck!

Your welcome Oceanview, I wouldn't worry about looking for schools in Diera unless of course you have primary school kids and look at DESS. It is a stressful time and we as expats have all been there and survived to tell the tale, my family and I have been here nearly 12 years, Dubai was quite a bit different back then. At least you now have loads of western shops and supermarkets etc and loads of schools to chose from, but lots more traffic! Emirates hopefully will sort you out soon, however to be honest I don't know of many people that happy with the accommodation side of things, loads of people from my era have been forced out of there homes in Jumeriah and told to live in Meydan and told if you dont like it leave. To be honest, where you live is obviously a huge part of your life and family's ability to settle in well, so don't settle for anything other than what you are willing to accept for your duration in Dubai as Emirates do not allow you to move within company accommodation unless they tell you, you have too. I am not sure if it is the same with your husbands contract but you can opt out of company accommodation and take the allowance, but to be honest that doesn't get you much either and I wouldn't do that until you have been here a couple of years and get to know the area's and the market. Once you opt out, Emirates never allow you back into company accommodation. Anyway embrace the change, it will be frustrating but at least your husband will be in the country, Pilots wives deal with all the changes and frustrations alone while husband are on trips, or so exhausted from jet lag they are of no use to us anyhow, LOL Once your kids start school, they will settle in, in no time and you will also meet other Mum's etc and before you know it, you will have been here 12 years also. My one piece of advice, bring your kids school shoes from Australia, hard to find decent ones here that you don't have to mortgage your house to pay for. ;)

Welcome to Dubai! Sorry to hear of your debacle with Emirates Accommodation, it is a total mess at the moment, like it was a few years ago. The problem was the original Meydan villas were deemed unacceptable by higher management when enough complaints were lodged, example, not being able to use upstairs toilets, not being able to flush paper in any toilet and if you did getting an enormous fine. So many problems with the villa's to many to mention here. So alot of families are being moved out of the Meydan villa's to the new villa's being built at Meydan, which have not been completed yet. So therefore there must be a shortage of villa's so your husband has been put into temporary accommodation until a suitable villa becomes available. The accommodation department are not very understanding or good to deal with, it takes the squeaky wheel to be oiled if you get my drift. Unfortunately for you and your husband as a new joiner you will be way down the list of getting a villa, however you will need to inform accommodation that Diera is not acceptable for a family and you want a more suitable apartment until a villa becomes available. Silicon (semmer villa) are the most desirable in the company now, as they are the biggest and only free standing villas, they now are usually put aside for management. (crazy but welcome to Emirates) To be honest I am surprised if your husband reads pprune you actually accepted a job as a Pilot with Emirates plenty of information on there as to how bad the accommodation situation is and loads more. Before any of the non Emirates people jump down our throats and tell us how lucky we are blah blah blah, it is part of our salary package to be supplied with suitable accommodation and one of the reasons we accept the job and when the goal posts get moved after you sign the contract it is not acceptable. Hope you get it sorted, however a friend of mine was in "temporary accommodation" for 18 months in a furnished 2 bed hotel room....with 3 kids and had to pay for there furniture to be stored. Hello tomorrow......LOL

I had a Indian/Pakistani man in his early 30's well dressed in a Black shirt and black pants, follow me around MOE, at first I thought it was just a co incident that he was going where I was going, however when I purposely turned and went the other way he also did, I started to feel very uncomfortable so I went into Home Centre and waited until he left, then realised he was waiting outside again. I ended up going to security as I felt very uncomfortable and didn't want to walk alone to the car park, there was not much the security could do as he had actually done nothing wrong.... but they did walk me to my car. But I understand how you feel as it is extremely frightening.

Thats great Rasalala, very happy to hear that!!! However what my problem is/was the difference between the Australian and British system, for my kids, not everyones obviously, there is a gap in the maths department for MY children. I just was "surprised" that thru there 7 years of schooling here not once was it mentioned that maths was a problem for them. I just wish I had known so I could of got tutoring earlier. It was the same at every parent teacher interview, your child is doing very well, excelling in exams, way ahead of the average blah, blah. They had fantastic opportunities here, not complaining about that, they to learnt Arabic, spanish, and had life experiences that wouldn't happen living in Australia as a non expat. Just noticed that all was not it seemed by the particular school that they went too here, which we thought was amazing, just wish that we knew we were just being told what we wanted to hear at the time. Clearly not everyone will be behind etc, just talking about my experience, wouldn't change our time in Dubai, just would of done some tutoring had we known.

Where does the UK fit in on this list then?? Is it public schools or private?? I'm really surprised to read this thread because I know a lot of Australians and I don't think of them as being particularly advanced academically ... Since it's Thursday....which nationalities do you think of as academically advanced? Your own :D ? According to the OECD, Australian education is in decline. Asian nations and economies are the best educated with Shanghai, Singapore, Hong Kong, Chinese Taipei, Korea, Macao and Japan leading the pack in mathematical literacy. Australia was also outperformed by Liechtenstein, Switzerland, Netherlands, Estonia, Finland, Canada, Poland, Belgium and Germany. http://www.theguardian.com/world/2013/dec/04/coalition-seizes-on-poor-test-rankings-to-claim-more-money-does-not-improve-results

This thread has turned into a comedy thread, love it!!! Maybe because my kids are now in secondary private schools in Sydney, PLC and Shore, they went to what we considered good schools here with a great reputation both primary and secondary, one near Wafi (primary) the other Academic city. (secondary) The real issue for both of them was maths, the other subjects are ok, maybe just a different method of teaching etc, science is ok and history is ok, geography the eldest is ahead, however I think that was alot to do with the travel we did and living in a multi culture. I am not a rocket scientist nor do I know any or expect my kids to be......just thought they would of had the basic maths down pat considering there report cards here, compared with what I am reading now. I must admit though almost everyone I know had some sort of tutoring for there child in Dubai.....maybe I should of done the same for my kids, I just went off what the teachers said and the report card every term and was always told, they were above average and the eldest was in the top set for maths and always went well on tests etc. Anyway sorry....didn't mean to start a war of words over which nationality is the smartest etc....LOL my Aussie friends sure aren't rocket scientists!! Lastly, we were very happy with the schools in Dubai, just have put it down to a different method of teaching and a different system and glad to have sorted it now.

Fasting for day just for the sake of some campaign or similar is of course going to be very challenging. But when a Muslim fasts for the sake of Allah, it is not just about food...it's about the whole body, mind, and soul, something completely different and purposeful. Receiving "compliments" for practicing our faith is very strange! Receiving compliments in our culture is a good thing, take it how it is meant, a non muslim is tyring to be understanding of your faith during your holy month, as Marroosh said in another post, we are all from different cultures and faiths and try to be understanding that what you may see as "strange' we see as "normal" and vice versa.

I think 1 we need to do, especially with so many different backgrounds, is respect that everyone has their own views. We don't need to agree but let's just agree to disagree then. We can discuss, share our views, but let's not ridicule each other. Love this Marroosh!

We are a family of 4, one teenager and one tween and we budget 7000 dhs a month which generally works out that we spend it all on groceries. Still way cheaper than what we would be spending in Australia, probably 40% cheaper according to family and friends that still live in Australia.

In the 7 years we have been there we have had nothing but positive experiences, having said that no school is perfect, but in my eyes Horizon comes pretty close. I dont know anything about Star International and have never heard of anyone going there so cant compare sorry, however just wanted to let you know how happy we have been with Horizon School, a great little school with a nice community feel too it, but with big school "power". Good luck in whatever you decide to do, school is such a huge part of your and your children's lives.

So sad....such a great country, just way to expensive to live for the average person. I have friends that say they can only afford meat a few days a week, say they are eating lots of pasta and at the end of pay week are having toast and vegemite. They never go out to movies or restaurants and they both work.... quote=littleone'>I was home last month, $1.50 a litre for petrol....and you have to pump it yourself! Went to Red Rooster for a family chook meal....$39.00 for chips, chook, coleslaw and potatoes and gravy. Wow I was shocked. We have decided to stay here for a while longer its cheaper by far.
