Good afternoon, I think you will find that all relevant pain management for child birth is available here...I last gave birth here 16 years ago and all was comparable to my experience in the UK so I am sure the same will still apply. Good luck.

Hi Lucinda, good luck with your move to Dubai. Re education for your daughter, I think FS2 is the equivalent of Reception, but not entirely sure now, however I think you may be in for a bit of stress regarding getting her a place.....I would suggest you start emailing the schools asap as places are quite hard to come by. The usual schools that are recommended are JESS, DESS, JEBIL ALI PRIMARY SCHOOL, JPS, KINGS, all of which (I think), have secondary schools which they feed in to. I know you may think that is years away, but time flies and secondary school places are even more difficult to come by. There are a lot of new schools around now and all seem to be ok, the ones above are the well established schools here in Dubai. The other main criteria I would suggest, is trying to find a school local to where you live...driving can be a huge nightmare here and with schools starting so early, you probably do not want to be on the roads for too long. As an example my daughter went to a school that was too far away for me to get her there and her siblings to their school on time, the bus collected her at 5.45am each day....obviously that didn't last long! The KHDA which is the governing body of schools here publish reports on the schools, so check out their web site and work out where your location is with regard to schools...finally if staying long term, check out if the secondary school attached goes down the IB or A Level route and see which you prefer, far away I know....but worth planning for! Good luck.

I feel your pain, we merrily sent off a photo frame to mother in law for her birthday with a few pictures in, not expensive, possibly 150dhs......it was being delivered to Spain - she was charged 109 Euros on delivery!!! We had no idea, were never informed and obviously didn't expect it....puts new meaning into 'its the thought that counts'!!!

I really feel for you, that is dreadful for you and your family - I can only imagine the stresses you are suffering. Is there no way the company would extend the redundancy by 4 months? Am sure you have approached that but just a thought....don't mention the problem to the school, Any school's in your home country she could transfer to for the final exams? It must have happened before and surely there is a way for her to transfer...although I understand that it would be very difficult and unsettling for her. Very, very difficult indeed, you have my sympathies entirely! Good luck, hopefully something will sort itself out for you.

Hi, we have lived on The Palm for 7 years, in a villa on the fronds and love it. We wouldn't want to live anywhere else now. As far as apartments go I think the Golden Miles are good, there are lots of facilities coming along right now.

Hi Nobbles, sorry I have only just seen this post, but if this helps...we have been living in a Garden Home since 2007 on The Palm, normal family, 3 kids. We love living here, it feels like a bit of space outside of the normal hustle and bustle of Dubai.I walk every day around the Fronds, with no traffic on the beach! Noise wise it will depend on which frond and where you are, we are closer to the inner corner and do sometimes hear traffic over the weekend, but nothing major. If you are further out then that won't be a problem, if you are too far out and close to the crescent then there may be a little noise from the hotels if they are having events over the weekend but again only now and again. As far as party houses or short term rentals, that could be pot luck, but check out the neighbours first! We don't have an issue now but we did go through a stage of having a party house next door...security did sort that out eventually. Traffic is increasing as more buildings are being occupied and the building of the mall is causing a few disruptions, however it is manageble, on the whole I would advise your friend to choose her spot, check out the neighbours and enjoy the peace of The Palm!

Hi Roxan51 - It sounds as though you were very unlucky yesterday on your visit to The Palm, it isn't always like that. We have been living on The Palm for 7 years now, and yes, the traffic has increased a little, particularly over the weekends, but generally there are no problems with traffic at all and even at 'bad points' it is usually only a small bottleneck around where they are building the new Mall. I suspect when all is up and running there will be some road changes to accommodate the increasing traffic. We enjoy the peace of the island and being able to walk around the beaches and surrounding area, so for us it is a wonderful, peaceful island with more facilities arriving every day. It is a shame you had a bad day but I can assure you that living here on a daily basis has been, and is, lovely. Hope you have a better experience next time, please don't let one day put you off.

Hi, another Palm resident here, it was only a couple of years ago that there was a problem, certainly wasn't a problem last year at all and we have had absolutely no notification of any issues this year or having to be in by 3pm. We have also been to get security passes for some visitors who are arriving late on the 31st and there was no mention of any road closures on Palm, or a time to be in by at all. So...fingers crossed! Happy New Year!

Hi, with your background I am sure you will find work here, it is a very different set up with regard to health care than what we have in the UK, all clinics are private and many like to offer the services you provide. I would send your cv to as many 'clinics' as you can, Dubai Physio Clinic, Dubai London clinic- Andrew Picken at Bespoke Wellness....if you goggle all you will see the various positions they have, Health Bay Poly Clinic, Up and Running to name a few, send your cv to all and 'm sure you will be successful, nutritionists are always required in Dubai....the main hospitals too - American, City, Medcare. Good luck with your move.

Hi MellowMoon, good luck with your move, re 6th form - there is huge pressure on places here for 6th form, particularly for A Levels, quite a few of the schools here have gone down the IB route, may I suggest that you get your applications in asap for your daughter. A few that I know of and would recommend are ; Dubai College, Dubai English Speaking College, (DESC), Jumeirah College (JC), English College (EC). I think applications close towards the end of next month.

Hi Alismum, yes I did give a copy of the vaccination book showing that DD has had 2 shots of MMR already, and I totally agree derien....I don't see why if they have had the 2 they need a 3rd. hope1more, the schools are handing out a new form sent to them by government...and I agree sheikhandbake, I suspect it will disappear.....fingers crossed anyway! I could understand it more if they were insisting that all 2nd doses had to be done, but not a 3rd. In some cases some kids will only have had their 2nd recently....

Hi, its an extra dose on top of the 2 most children already have, according to the letter we have had, via school, from Dubai Government, it is compulsory unless you have a good medical reason. It is apparently to try and eradicate measles. I understand the desire but like others have said, I am not happy about giving extra doses of vaccinations, like most parents I have followed all the rules and recommended vaccinations however I am not happy about the idea of being forced to give my child a 3rd MMR. I have ticked no on my form and will wait to see.......

Apparently it is compulsory even if your child has had the 2 doses......we have had a letter saying that unless we have supporting documents from a doctor then they will be insisting on the vaccination, and it is the MMR.

Hi Crocus, It is a terrible state of affairs, I have a personal interest as my niece is in her 4th year of training and this is just such a blow to all of them. It seems to me that we have such a shortage of doctors in UK, there are not enough medical schools, the competition to get in is now ridiculous - when they get in they have to pay all their uni fees, unlike physiotherapy which is paid for by the NHS?! And now another kick.....not entirely sure what the government is trying to do to them here.....very sad for people who are choosing to work so hard for a vocation....

dotteia, best of luck with your decision, you can only do what you feel is right for your whole family, and only you guys know what your priorities are. Education, family life, work, lifestyle...it is so difficult! We have been here 20 years now, 2 kids have been through the system and both are back in the UK now working and at Uni, our youngest is now about to do GCSE's, at each point in the education system we have thought, right time to leave, GCSE's in UK, A Levels in UK....once again we are facing the question! I have mixed views about whether we have been right or wrong to stay...our eldest 2 say they enjoyed growing up here but the transient nature of Dubai has left them with no real friends, lots of passing ships! They love living in UK, get very bored now when they return here. However they settled home very easily which was a concern of ours.....so I don't think there is a right or wrong, it is up to your situation....I would say though that another poster is correct, things are changing here, education is changing, costs are definitely changing for the worse....at the end of the day I think the family life is the most important....it passes very quickly....do what is best for your family and yourselves.

Oh dear, that is a difficult one! I think if you read between the lines of what you have written you seem to feel it is better for the boys to stay in the UK, but better for the family as a whole to return to Dubai....what really made you leave in the first place? Have a really good think, (as I'm sure you have...) You may be in exactly the same situation returning here in so much as you are looking at Dubai with rose coloured spectacles too, 6 months in UK is not long after 7 years here, it may just be taking you longer to settle back. Schooling may be an issue, as you know places in decent schools are hard to come by here, everything is getting more and more expensive and the driving is still as crazy! As an exercise I would suggest you look at which schools you could get the boys in to, tentatively enquire about the job for your husband if that was possible....housing - could you afford a house similar to what you had without your job? And if you return it will probably be until the kids finish their schooling so 8 years minimum, is that feasible? You won't want to disrupt them again......Sorry, I'm not being much help, but I think I would say if you are going to do it, do it quickly and be prepared for the long stay, the quicker the better....but going back is not always the answer.....things are never quite the same.....Best of luck, very difficult....

Hi both my 'kids' did an intensive learn to drive course in the UK, 5 hours a day for a week or 2, they then passed a UK driving test and converted their licence here once 18. We then drove here with them for a couple of months to make sure they had practice, not SZ road! After that ,they did drive here, they were not allowed to drive on SZ road at all and we also would not let them take their friends anywhere for first 6 months or so! Those were our own rules and both now drive here comfortably. I will never not worry every time they go out in the car, that will never change, here or anywhere else! However I am glad they learnt in UK, I personally feel the instruction is more structured, I do think you have to drive with them here for a while to point out the crazy driving we have to deal with in Dubai! But in the end, it is your personal choice, it is a valid point that they will not have a valid licence once their visa is up. I was also concerned that if they started to drive here on a UAE licence and then still had to sit a test in UK that they would have picked up 'bad habits' and find it harder to pass a test at home. Good luck, a lot less stressful when all we used to worry about were toddler issues!

Hi, I have no personal experience of Hartlands at all, however if you have heard those rumours, and if there is any basis of truth to them I would steer clear! Big 'if's' I know, but even if they were 'teething' problems a head should be on site well before opening....just a personal opinion - would go with kings which at least has a couple of established schools here in Dubai. Good luck, in the end go with your gut feel.

Hi, had mine done at Centre for Sight in UK, with a fantastic surgeon - Sheraz Daya, he is brilliant, just goggle him. I had a procedure called Supracor to correct mid and short sight 5 years ago and has been fantastic. Quick procedure for both eyes, discomfort in the afternoon after the 'op' but all fine after that. The only thing it has left me with is a tendency to have 'dry eyes' sometimes....but that is nothing major, living here with our heat/sand/dust and a/c doesn't help that! You should be checked very carefully prior to having the treatment to make sure you are suitable for it, so I would suggest that anyone who is willing to just go ahead and do it without those checks needs to be avoided. Good luck, I have been delighted with the result.

I'm not entirely sure this is correct, we have our DS and DD both insured on our private cars even though they come in on visit visas. We obviously asked and made sure that was okay and it was confirmed to us by the insurance company that it is fine, so they both drive here on UK licenses.

Hi, you need to see someone to diagnose problem, again I would suggest you book an appointment with a podiatrist to make sure that you are suffering from this condition, no surgery needed - physio etc, you could ring the clinic to check out your particular insurance to see if it is covered. Good luck.

Hi Wind777, as other posters have said, it is 35 to 40 mins by car, but the school bus will take at least an hour each way, and depending on other 'pick ups/drop off's' it may take even longer, also to ensure the kids get to school on time the bus will depart around 6.15 am which means getting up very early indeed and a very late arrival home. I had personal experience of this with my daughter from The Palm, we had to move schools eventually for her as the journey was just far too much for her, we couldn't move. So, from personal experience I would suggest you move closer to the school, there is also a chance then that friends may be closer for her to mix with too.

Hi MollyMooMoo, sorry to hear you are suffering, and obviously as everyone else has said I agree that a Doctor's opinion is always a good idea. However , I also understand the need to try the alternatives to drugs as well, as long as not life threatening which appears to be the case for you at the moment. this may sound totally ridiculous but have you looked into the benefits of Tumeric for arthritis? i have a problem with my knees and a friend suggested I look this up, particularly tumeric golden paste, I have no idea if it is coincidence or not but since starting to take it regularly my knee problems are resolving. There is no harm done either way, I think the only caution when taking it is if you are on blood thinners and prior to surgery. However, there you are, it may be nothing but then again it may compliment what you are already doing, in this case, no harm in trying it! Good luck with all, but if you are in any doubt about your symptoms....back to the doctor!
