Hi, having lived in Dubai for 20 years now I am increasingly missing UK, however am worried that the grass may not always be greener at 'home', or in UK! Maybe I have got rose coloured spectacles on!! Anyone been through the experience of leaving Dubai after living here a while? How has it gone, any regrets? (PS I have never been a brunch/cocktails/coffee morning person in Dubai, so that doesn't come into play with my thoughts!)

Thanks to all for taking the time to reply and share your thoughts, chezmoi you have summed up my feelings completely! Ladymary, I agree on the health issues, increasingly I feel Dubai's air quality is getting worse and worse..... okay, lots to think about, so difficult having been here for so long, Dubai has been great and I won't knock it......but I think it is time to move on.....Thanks again.

Just a thought really! as I don't/ didn't Iive in Dubai. I lived for 30 yrs in another EU country. If you moved for economic reasons and not for the desire to be in Dubai I think your return to the UK should be pretty easy. Not making any real emotional ties with a country does help. i know I went for economic reasons and in the beginning as a 'Trailing Spouse' It was very hard work with two children and a foreign language to learn. It was never home. I moved to Portugal when I retired ,that was from choice ,and love of the country

Lots of my friends have moved back they all say the same. Some friends are on lower salaries than in Dubai but things are much cheaper here its not a important factor. Good luck with your decision.

Being an outdoorsy sort of person, I'm also feeling the pull towards home. I miss going for a walk in the woods or a bike ride to the store. Not quite sure how to make the transition home though when we've been here so long.

(PS I have never been a brunch/cocktails/coffee morning person in Dubai, so that doesn't come into play with my thoughts!) After many decades of feeling happy and settled in Dubai, I began to feel homesick, I ignored it for a while but it persisted, I wondered if my growing feeling towards returning home was based on rosy recollections of life at home as it had been long ago. I worried that i would find it difficult to readjust to life at home after so long in Dubai. But i began to be increasingly pulled towards going home in the last few years. It got to the point where i realised i had to return. I missed family, the green of nature and simple things like fresh air, spring flowers, falling leaves and walks in open countryside. In fact I realised i needed everything Dubai did not have to offer in spite of it being the amazing place it is. Dubai for me was a rare experience, I am grateful to have lived through the most changing decades of its development, i knew the old and the new Dubai, i have to say i preferred the former in many ways to the fast paced glitzy metropolis it has become, but i am not a city person either. So now a year later after picking up the courage to make the move back i am happy to say i know i did the right thing, no regrets at all. Yes the UK has changed in many ways, not all for the better, but so did Dubai over the years. Nowhere is static. A lot depends on location in the UK. But here I have things i will never have in Dubai, and even to my surprise I have not missed anything or wished for anything Dubai had to offer. Every day the simple pleasures of greenery and nature, the ease of communicating to people without difficulty, seeing my family, a sense of belonging, equality, stability and knowing that I will not have to leave when a residence visa expires all serve to remind me that I made the right decision in leaving. These and other freedoms are things beyond value. Dubai was a unique experience but for me can never compare to living at home. I guess your decision will depend on your personal outlook and priorities, it sounds to me you know what they are. Wishing you the best.
