Just a thought really! as I don't/ didn't Iive in Dubai. I lived for 30 yrs in another EU country. If you moved for economic reasons and not for the desire to be in Dubai I think your return to the UK should be pretty easy. Not making any real emotional ties with a country does help. i know I went for economic reasons and in the beginning as a 'Trailing Spouse' It was very hard work with two children and a foreign language to learn. It was never home. I moved to Portugal when I retired ,that was from choice ,and love of the country

This is a very old post! so assume the OP's father has already moved back to the UK.? Would be nice to have a follow up post.Hope it worked out for him in any event I have been an ex-pat for over 30 yrs and no way would i Have considered moving back to the UK. Not that I don't love it.Just that my horizons have broadened and my needs as an older person are very different to that young woman who left. As a general comment to any who are thinking of 'going home' after many yrs abroad .You have to understand that you have been changed by your ex-pat experience.Nothing stands still.iIt was a big ask to put a pin in a map and say this or that place would be best. I knew that after living in a country which had hot summers but freezing cold winters,I could not stand to be cold in my latter yrs. So south it was.I also knew that having learn't one new language I could learn another, altho preferable be able to choose English when I wished..I landed in Portugal in the south where they speak both Portuguese and English.. Once you have left your roots behind there are so many options open to you in retirement

Can highly recommend Portugal's beautiful Algarve region, never too crowded or too hot ,wonderful beaches and lots of outdoor activities for the kids .The people are very friendly, hotels and resorts are top class, finally English is widely spoken certainly in all tourist areas

I know this thread started last year but maybe of some help to families planning for 2016 My family moved to Portugal 5 yrs ago having been an ex-pat in and around Europe for many yrs and visiting most southern E countries I can highly recommend Portugal for families ,especially young ones. It's not as crowded as Spain and it doesn't generally get the high humidity along with high temperatures that Spain gets.I am also pretty wary of any type of Bug..Portugal has the least problem with mosquitoes or other flying insects of any Southern country I have visited. It's has excellent to world class beaches.is very safe (18 on the world list of safest countries) Fantastic food and very friendly people. The Algarve is the best area imo.not only for the beaches and accommodation but everyone speaks English..
