I have it on good authority that these are the 3 main options with Allied: Option 1 - You pay for a full container, and fill it with as much (or as little!) stuff as you want. You get an "exact" shipping and delivery date. This is the most expensive option, obviously. Option 2 - You "share" a container with other people's shipments. This option is for people who only have a few items to ship but don't want to pay for a full container, so Allied basically group several clients' stuff together until the container is full, and then it's shipped. This is most likely the most cost-effective option but you won't necessarily get an exact shipping or delivery date - only an estimate - as obviously they won't always know when the container will be filled (and therefore ready to ship) as they're relying on clients to fill it. I haven't said that properly but hoping you get the gist! Option 3 - Not 100% sure but something like if you don't want to pay for a full container, but you also don't want to wait a while for your stuff to ship, Allied box your stuff up (wooden boxes), and stick it on the next ship out with available space in containers. Sounds like a "third party" kind of jobby though, so not sure how popular this option is, or whether it's more or less cost than option 2.

Yes, brushing hair is not a bad idea. I literally never brush my hair apart from after a shower though, haha! But I'll give it a go. Will also take a look at the Blu shower head. I bought one of their air purifiers recently but am returning it because I didn't feel or see any results :( Hopefully the shower head will have an effect. Thanks for the tips, ladies!

Hi ladies, Been in Dubai for 2 years now and think it's about time I spent some dosh on something to reduce my somewhat chronic hair fall out. Luckily I have thick hair so it's not that I'm upset with thinning hair or anything like that - instead the problem is how many long dark hairs are here, there, and everywhere! All over the sofa and throws, all over the floor, in my car, at my desk (at work!), it's so irritating and doesn't look nice. So what would you ladies suggest? Some kind of shower filter maybe? I don't believe special shampoos etc would have much effect because it's clearly to do with the water we have here - so even with these shampoos I'm going to be using the water. Basically, has anyone had any successful results with reducing hair fall out, and if so, what did you do? Thank you

Hala Fadli Dermatology & Laser Clinic. They use the Soprano XL machine which is literally pain free - and I mean "literally" in the real sense of the word. Not the way the imbeciles have hijacked it and use it now... I always rave about this machine (and laser hair removal in general!) because I've had many laser experiences over my lifetime - different machines, different areas, different lengths of treatment, different times of the year (Yes! That can make a difference!) and all of them have given me some sort of pain or at least discomfort. With the Soprano XL you don't feel a thing - so much so that a few times I was like "Are you sure it's on?" but it was and so far my results have been what I expected so I am happy. By that I mean my leg hair was something Guinness World Record worthy. Seriously. It was like carpet. (Nice!) But after 7 sessions it's now patchy, thinner (so I can get my legs out even when they're actually a little "hairy" whereas before this was just impossible), and the hair takes a lot longer to grow back which again, is a huge improvement because my leg hair would honestly start sprouting like 12 hours after shaving. I just wish I could afford more sessions to get rid of it completely but not going to lie, it is extremely expensive :( The machine itself is worth half a million AED apparently! Also worth nothing that the self-proclaimed King of Instagram/annoying billionaire playboy Dan Bilzerian has one too, and considering how hairy he was and how filthy rich he is, I'm pleased with the fact that he got this machine as it kind of proves to me that it's the best, as I can picture him calling his assistants saying "Just get me the best hair removal machine on the market." I'm also getting my underarms done at the mo and honestly after just 2 sessions, at least 70% has just gone completely. Really pleased.

What data do you need to transfer to what device? If you want to transfer all your data from an old iPad or iPhone to a new iPad or iPhone you can use the below instructions: 1) Plug your old device into your computer with the Apple USB cord 2) Open iTunes (if it doesn't already open automatically) 3) Top left there should be a symbol representing your device (i.e iPad, iPhone) Click on this symbol 4) Scroll down to "Backups" 5) Under the section labelled "Automatically Back Up", select "This Computer" (as opposed to "iCloud") 6) To the right of this section click on the button that says "Back Up Now" 7) Leave your device to Back Up. This can take a long time. 8) Once the back up is finished, eject your old device and plug in your new device 9) Go through all the usual steps such as "Select language, Select country, Select Wifi etc", and when you eventually get to a step that says something like "Set Up as a New Device?" or "Restore from [name of previous back up'>" - Select this option and again, leave your new device to do it's thing. 10) Once this has finished, your new device will be a mirror copy of your previous/old device, right down to your missed calls, SMSs, Apps, etc

Doesn't it depend on the building? I'm in Mosela Tower (the high-rise next to Regent International School) and ours get done every 3 months, which in my opinion is no way often enough!!! But ho-hum. I also just called Maintenance to ask when the windows are next getting done and they said "Mmmmmmnext month", "OK but when next month? What date?", "Mmmmmno date ma'am. But they will come" Super(!)

Hello ladies, One of the things I really miss about living in cooler climates is being able to open all the windows and doors of the house to get some fresh air throughout. Obviously living in such a hot and sandy country now, this isn't possible. So what can I buy to try and replicate this? I always see these humidifiers ad purifiers in the malls and wondered if they'd help. So I've done a little research and have found that basically: Air humidifiers literally release water into the air. Benefits of this include helping with allergies and dry skin etc but they do not actually work to clean the air. Plus if you don't look after them they can release bacteria into the air which you will then breathe in. Air purifiers work to purify/clean the air of dust, smells (such as stale smoke) but some types can also cause inflammation of the respiratory system. Neither my husband or I have any breathing ailments, all we want is to occasionally give our apartment that fresh air feel we used to get from opening the windows. So which type of air thingy would you suggest we get? Is one more expensive than the other? Require more maintenance and parts? Is there anything else you ladies could suggest I buy?

The main question here is: Do any of these places do PROPER traditional clotted cream? Because when I had a Cream Tea at the Waldorf Astoria, they brought out a little dish of squirty cream - _ - and blueberry jam - _ - Not the traditional strawberry or raspberry.

I saw a Sphynx cat in some awful pet shop of SZR the other day. He was so cute. Never thought I'd find a Sphynx cat "cute" but he had lovely pale blue eyes and stared at me for ages. Pawing the glass occasionally. Also pacing his [tiny urine filled'> enclosure to follow my gaze as I walked around the store. Beautiful little thing. Anyway, Nomad's reply seems pretty spot on. That's what I did with my two cats back home in UK and now they're the best of sleeping buddies! Separating them but introducing their scent through blankets, beds, toys, little boxes of each other gives them the message that "Look. There's another cat living here now, and you're both sharing stuff, so you might not like it but you're both just going to have to accept it!" But do it slowly, like Nomad said. A week here sitting with new cat, a week there sitting with old cat. Our cat in the UK was so upset at first, but eventually he became so curious about the new arrival that he'd sit and sleep outside the door where the new arrival was. And sometimes we'd crack open the door for them to get a very small peek/smell of each other. Yes there would be hissing, but sometimes that's just showing fear, not necessarily aggression. Soon you can conduct supervised playtimes as on the first meet a little scuffle may break out, but hopefully eventually they'll settle down. Time is your friend here. Just take as much time as you can doing this. P.S. I'm clearly no expert as I've only had to do this once (introducing new/old cats) but it worked like a charm and like I say they're so close now!

Can someone please tell me exactly why Aspall's Red Wine Vinegar (or any red wine vinegar!) is not sold in UAE? Is it because it has "wine" in the name? Surely can't be as I saw "cider vinegar" for sale in C4 the other day. I've tried the grape vinegar but it's just not the same :( Thinking of asking my friend to being some back with her from UK next week, but can she get in trouble for it?

That's true Oopsie. Where I'm from a police car, ambulance etc with flashing lights means "emergency, move". Here the lights don't seem to be used in the same way. Yes I've been wondering this too. Many times I see both ambulances and police cars, plodding along or sitting in a queue behind a red traffic light, with their lights on but no siren. What does this mean? Have they just forgotten to turn them off? They're clearly not on a job or rushing to get to an emergency, so why leave them on? Surely it teaches drivers not to pay the required attention when they see flashing lights.

Hi hsaj, Well done on your Mum for caring for them despite not being a cat person, and well done for you for caring from many miles away :) Whereabouts is the villa based? I've got a cat trap, and if you post your story on 'the bin kitty collective' Facebook page, I'm sure more people would step up to either loan their cat traps or perform the trap themselves. I think the AED 50 per neuter offer is still on so would be great to take advantage to get them all done! P.S. In fact definitely post this on 'the bin kitty collective' Facebook page as it will be easier to communicate details. You know how funny EW can get about that kind of thing...

Superb post, SueB. One particular line that resonated with me was "If you see yourself here, know that you are a bad person" as I couldn't agree more. People like that are BAD PEOPLE. No matter how funny you may be, how polite, charming, generous etc to abandon an animal like that, basically torturing it, means you are nothing but a bad person and you will never be forgiven by the powers that be (religious or fate/karma). Ghandi once said "The greatness of a nation can be judged by the way its animals are treated." and I have always applied this to people. It's fine if you don't like animals, bit weird, but OK I get it, some people don't, but to be able to torture an animal through abandonment means you have a bad heart and I would never want to engage with such a person. Sounding a bit preachy here but it is gut wrenching (more than heart wrenching!) to see the state some of these animals, FORMER LOVED PETS, are left in when someone is bored with them, or would rather spend their money on a couple of overpriced brunches than pay for them to fly home with them. Just DON'T get a pet if you're not in it for the long haul!!!

Big love to your friend for doing the right thing by taking her pet back home with her!!!! <3 <3 As someone who is heavily involved in UAE animal welfare, it's a travesty to see the amount of pets that are literally abandoned in the streets (or locked up in empty villas) by owners who either haven't saved the money to take them back with them, or were never intending to. So, big kudos to your friend!! : )

Well after calling both Must Have Maintenance and Jim Will Fix It, for our first aircon service we've decided to go with Must Have for the sole reason that they charge AED 200 per unit, where as Jim charge AED 350 per unit. Hopefully they will do as good a job as skyfall explained Jim did. If not then I guess next time we'll just bite the bullet and go with Jim. It's just AED 150 more (per unit) is quite a steep difference!!

Hello, Could someone please recommend a company whose hourly rate won't cost the earth? And who are also professional and know what they're doing. In both the living area and the bedroom (we live in a 1 BR) only 1 of the 2 x fans is working. Plus when you turn the aircon off at the wall, it doesn't always go off until you violently push it up to the highest setting, in order to slam it down to off again. TIA!

Thanks for the replies. The problem here is (and I knew it from the start) the IS no company policy in writing. No manual, no handbook, nothing. In fact I emailed him right after making this thread saying "Please send me a copy of the company policy so I can read through it before my meeting with you" - I'd asked for a meeting to have him explain some of these bizarre rules and regs he'd apparently pulled out of his you-know-what. And his reply? "We don't have a written policy as such, but we follow a practice" Well then what's "the practice"?! If it's the UAE Labor Law, then say so! But I know it's not because no where on that doc does it say anything like what he's been saying. Good news is I must have had an effect on him because he visited the our office earlier (about something unrelated) and said to me that not only has he decided my signed-by-the-manager sick form and hospital certificate is fine so he in fact WON'T take 3 x days of my hols, but also that he is in the process now of putting together a written company policy. Like I said, I wasn't trying to be troublesome, but I -we all!- need to know where we stand with certain things to avoid disagreements like this happening.

I had hair botox once and it did absolutely nothing to my hair. Seriously, no change in texture or look whatsoever. I then did Keratin and that definitely made a difference. Silky and super straight and zero frizz after blowdrying...but it certainly didn't last for 6 months or whatever it is they say. Lasted for like 4 weeks top. I've never tried Brazilian Blowout though so I'd be interested to hear people's experiences.

You are not there because you are at work or because you don't want to be in her space whilst cleaning? Depending on the circumstances there is more than one way to deal with this situation. Not there because I'm at work. And my maid is the same every week as I request her. She was actually named and recommended by someone here on expatwoman! That's how I found her, ha! Well, anyway, I phoned them and asked to try and work with another maid. Naturally they asked me what the problem was and I didn't tell them the whole story. I told them she's just not consistent enough for me i.e. Some days she does a great job, other days she doesn't do quite major parts of cleaning and it's starting to bother me. I don't want to get the poor girl in trouble, but I had to say something! If new maid doesn't work out then I will go to another company altogether, most likely one of the ones suggested in this thread, so thanks for suggestions. And Tallybalt thanks so much for the idea! I will definitely make sure that new maid's first few visits are on the weekend, so I can be sure to see what she's done, and then when she's finally doing it to my standard (which isn't ridiculous high, btw! Honest!) I can put the shift back to a weekday :) edited by poshbird87 on 25/11/2014

Kindly do the needful. Please revert. Your good name. My dear. Maamsir. Round the backside. Shifting (as in "I'm shifting to Dubai"). Please reply on the same. 1 dirham ma'am? Give me. Tell me. Sir (when addressing you in an email even though they know you're female). Avail this offer. Kid (when used in advertising eg. only 20dhs per kid) it sounds so unprofessional. All of above are mainly Dubai-isms but there are some others that really get on my nerves... This list made me literally laugh out loud. Especially when I got to "Give me" and "Tell me". So Dubai!!! I've got another one....: "No issues". Today on the phone to Du, "Yes you've actually called my mobile instead of my husband's so-" "NO ISSUES. No issues. No issues, Ma'am. No issues....no issues" What?! Who said there was an issue here? I'm not THAT bothered. I'm just letting you know. "...ooook, so if you wanna just call him, his number is-" "No issues, no issues, yes thank you, no issues, I'll do that" WTF?! XD If anyone should say "No issues" it should be me!!
