2,5 years ago we just came to Dubai, had no car and walked from work to a hotel. When we were crossing the road on a pedestrian cross a Tahoe full of children (not in car seats, one of them on the driver's lap) stopped, window went down and the driver started asking us money for petrol. We were genuinely shocked. I couldn't believe that Tahoe drivers beg for money. Didn't give any money.

Hi ladies, We are moving out of dubai soon and I have no idea where do i get boxes to pack our belongings. Yet I wouldn't like to have the job done by a packing/moving company, I hope I can save money and cope myself as we don't have a lot of things. If you could recommend a shipping company from Dubai to Auckland with approximate charges that would be just great too. TIA

I want to add, I was studing in EDI in Al Quos branch. They have very nice stuff, and they will never say that u will fail! Never! Thanks to my teachers Elena and Sulima. I studied at the same place but I had a male instructor who was very patient. Though when I received my license the instructor told me not to drive alone) June b, I did quite the same, I practiced at night or early in a weekend morning in al quoz area with my husband. But we were warned not to do so because it is illegal.

Hi amd9. Congratulations! I can only share my experience and hope that it will be of any help. I came to Dubai 2 months pregnant and got an insurance from my husband's job (as a family member). The insurance covered all the maternity expenses (the limit was 50000usd which was more than enough). Take care

Hi Jay, I'm a mom of a 1,5 yo girl. We also live in Marina. We can meet to go out to JBR together if you want. I take my DD there every evening. You might also want to check toddler meetups on this site, they organize playdates regularly, or register on meetups site and find the groups you are interested in, or find groups on FB.

Yes, comp99 is right. You should clarify what is the authorised hospital in Dubai which can do that. And also you might have to bring the forms for medical checup and 2 3x4 photos with you. I did my checup at London Clinic, because it was the only authorised hospital of the country I'm going to visit. It was a lot of paperwork and it was not cheap.

Umm ayan. Drive around on a Friday morning when there isn't much traffic. Start driving around your house, then slowly venture out further. You will get the hang of it. To the op. Good luck you will pass eventually. Just be patient and don't let anyone make you feel less confident. When I did my test, the girl before me drove up the pavement and crashed into a road sign. So my test was postponed till the afternoon. It was really scary as she pushed the gas pedal instead of the breaks and it was raining!! It is a nice idea to practice regularly on Friday mornings :) Apart from the fear of other cars and drivers I have a huge fear of being lost on the road. I have a very bad sense of orientation and being concentrated mainly on my own steering wheel and the speed I can easily lose my way.

Hi ladies, Could you please share your ideas on what to do on a Friday evening with a 1,5 year old? We usually go to the Beach near JBR, but on Fridays it becomes too crowded. I suggested we go to Barsha Park, or Kite beach, but I suspect it will be not less crowded there. Could you please recommend a nice outdoor place? Thank you!

Dear Reva and June_B, I really feel for you. It is a difficult thing to obtain a driving skill, it takes time, effort and money to get a license here. But the more you practice, the better you are. try to keep as calm and confident as you can. Don't be nervous, don't hurry up and you will definately pass. So many people have a license and you will. Though I had no issues with my exams here, i still don't drive. I got my license more than a year ago. I think I passed just because I was pregnant and due in a month after I had my final exam, so the assessor was not severe at all and probably turned a blind eye on my not so good control of the car. Having received my driving license I never actually drove myself because i don't feel confident enough. So having a lisence doesn't mean being able to drive (it my case at least).

Hi, I would also stop sterilizing and boiling water at this age. I started giving my daughter bottled water at the age of 9 months. I use the brand Erikli.

Has anyone been to the beach this week? Just wondering if the sea has cooled down yet enough for a beach day this weekend/half term. Our compound pool is quite cool already (lovely for a proper swim). I go to the beach almost every day after 4 pm and the sea is fantastic.

I'm TRYING to grow my hair after 15 years of having short hair, but finding it really difficult, my hair looks dull and I seem to get constant split ends. I've been using the Marrocan oil treatment for the past 3 months but don't see any improvement. Any shampoo/conditioner/treatment recommendations? I don't mind paying for the more expensive brands if it's been tried and tested ;) I've always had long hair, so I'm not sure my recommendations regarging growing the hair bach will be helpful, though I had a problem with dull hair and solved it. I started to avoid silicones in my haircare products as much as possible and my hair became shinier. Morocan oil products (and some of Kerastase products) contain silicone which makes the hair heavier, greasier and gradually drier. But if you use a cleansing shampoo at least 1 time in a three week period it can help to wash away the silicone buildup. Cleansing shampoos are available in professional haircare brans as well as "green, bad things-free" brands. I use Avalon organics, bought it from Life pharmacy. I tried to use sls and silicone free shampoo and conditioner on a regular basis to completely get rid of silicones in my haircare routine, but they don't work well for me, they tangle my hair and don't wash it well. Also I tried to use Kerastase products and it wasn't a good experience also. Though it might depend on the line you choose. So now I have the following routine: day 1 - cleansing shampoo and a hair mask, day 4 - sls and silicone free shampoo and conditioner, day 7 - Elvive shampoo and conditioner. My hair seems happy. And I see a lot of new small hair growing back after pregnancy and lactation. HTH

Good afternoon ladies. Have you by any chance seen t-shirts of the brand 5.11 somewhere in Dubai or Abu-Dhabi except for the shop Tactical Trading? My husband urgently needs some. I am also looking for plain cotton beige t-shirts and if you have any suggestion where to find them I'll be grateful. I've been to Giordano, Go-sport and some other sport shops, but nothing there. TIA

Hi ladies. How do you entertain your toddlers? I have a 1,5 year old baby and no idea where to take her to have fun. We usually go to the beach or to JBR, but it is no longer exciting. I also tried playgroungs, such as Cheeky monkeys and Favourite things, but she doesn't like to go there. Any suggestions would be highly appreciated. TIA.

Thank you, Alismum. I visited JBR office as well. And I also filled a form and the guy scanned my ID, but no result. I think I'll go to a larger office. But actually I believed I could avoid it, as it is far from our home and my daughter doesn't like long trips like that.

Hi ladies, I'm writing here out of despair. My problems with du began a month ago when I started receiving messages requesting me to go to their office and update my documents otherwise they disrupt the services. I did it as soon as I could, but I didn't stop receiving the messages. I visited another office and again the officer scanned my id and ensured me that everything was alright. Having visited their office twice I still received messages. When I addressed this problem to customer care hotline, they advised me to disregard the messages. Finally 3 days ago they disrupted the servises and now I'm left without mobile connection. I went to the office again and they told me they needed to send my document (3rd time???) for reregistration. Mind you, they never explained the reasons for the breakeup and never apologized. Just informed me that reregistration will take 48 hours(!!!). 48 hours passed and my simcard is still blocked. I called to their customer service, which is not really helpful be the way, and they informed that my documents are still not on their system and I have to wait for 24 more hours. I'm pretty sure that tomerrow my simcard will not be unblocked. I'm really very furious. And the fact that I'm alone with a small baby in Dubai only adds to my desperation. Moreover, I don't have a lot of time to visit their office on a daily basis. This is rather painful to go there with my daughter and get no result. Any suggestion, how can I make my simcard work again? Where can I complain to be heard? TIA

Congratulations to your family! I delivered in Al Zahra hospital with dr. Lina and it was a good experience. Especially I liked postnatal care. The nurses kept checking my baby and me and helped with breastfeeding (it was my first baby so I was rather helpless). As far as I can judge the delivery room and the postnatal room are comfortable and well equipped. Also you can have a walk through the hospital as soon as your doctor makes a booking for your delivery in the hospital. If I have a second baby in Dubai I'll go to the same doctor and same hospital. I hope this helps) Best of luck!

Hi Stix, thank you for your reply. That's my husband who needs a tutor. He would like to improve communication skills (catching fluent English speech and responding adequately to it). He will have opportunity to have classes only during December.
