I have a silverfish problem. I find them everywhere, even the bedroom cupboards! Does anyone have a recommendation? What is a silverfish?

I only saw one or two a week or so ago in the kitchen and they were very small. Today I saw a bigger cockroach on my bedroom floor, and 4 ran away from under my kettle as soon as I picked it up. There's more now!! I need pest control recommendation please. How much am I expected to pay and how do I know they will use safe treatment methods. I have heard of case of poisoning and death caused by neighbours doing pest control, so I'm worried about who I should choose. HELP! I saw one this morning! Took me ages to catch it. I have the spray but didn't have the heart to kill it so just put it out the front probably made his way back in now!:( Roaches are about the only animals I will kill if I see them. No mercy  I know I want to be like that as they just keep coming back! but I just cannot do it! I have tried! My neighbour is good at doing it though.

I went in early April two years ago and wore shorts & t-shirts the entire trip...so definitely not cold. Highly recommend the day trip to traverse the canal - it only runs certain days of the week so be sure to check that before you book flights. Thank you

Hi I really would appreciate some advice and someone to talk to about moving to Hong Kong. My husband is currently a headteacher in England but he has always wanted to work and move abroad, particularly HK. His best friend worked there for many years. We have thought about it several times and he has applied twice but something has always stood in our way. We have a ten year old daughter who is in year 5 and I work part time as a photography teacher in an independent boarding school, we also have 2 dogs. My husband doesn't want to look back in years to come and regret not working abroad but I have some doubts and I am not sure I could let our dogs go. My mum is also on her own now and I know she would find it very difficult. She was the reason why we didn't go last time. Part of me thinks it would be a great thing for our family but I am not used to a big city and have never lived anywhere other than the area we are in now. If anyone could offer some advice or help it would be great. I haven't got anyone else to talk to. Leaving your mother is hard, What does she think about it? Have you spoken to her about it? I lived in HK for a couple of years when I was a child. My mum didn't like it so much, but we did! I think she didn't like it as most of the expat woman didn't work but that's all different now. I was 10 and my sister must have been round 5. I only have great memories looking back. (It was in the 90's) Can you not bring your dogs with you? I am sure lots of families move pets abroad. Good luck with it, It will be an adventure if you go and its not forever!

Is there a personal trainer out there who will take on an unfit, gym-averse, 50-something female (who also needs to get in shape and lose 20kgs before April 2017?). Motivated but unsure where or how to start.. Great news that you want to get fitter. Having a personal trainer will always help but to start with you can always start with light walking or use you tube for some inspiration to start excising at home! Maybe go to a beginners group exercise class, they are not as scary as they sound and its good when others are around you to motivate you!

Hello, ladies! I`m organizing my son`s 5th birthday. This is our first year in Dubai, and I`m not familiar with the things here yet. The party will be in our house/garden, children will be about 10. I`ll need of somebody to entertain them - games, etc. for about 1 hour. As budget is not big, I prefer somebody with experience, but a freelancer or self employed, rather than from a company. Any suggestions? And one more question - which is the best place for buying party things - balloons, hats, plates... Thanks in advance! How about his: https://www.facebook.com/dubai.studio21/ Might be worth a try!

HI, Good luck with the assessment! It can be little stressful with all the moving over with all the paper work but that once that is done you can relax. Life out here is what you make it. We moved here in April and so far have enjoyed it and are happy with everything we have been given. Some people moan about the package but if you compare it to other packages where we are from (The UK), then it is a great deal. Accommodation- Where they put you is pot luck but as others have suggested it is highly likely to be Madyen or Mayden South. We have friends there are they are happy with the community there but it still has some room for development with regards to facilities. We have seen friends been moved to all sorts of different areas this year so anything is possible. We didn't get placed in Mayden even though we thought we would be. All the best

Dear all I am a Chinese mom and my husband holds a French passport. We all live in Dubai with our child. Recently, we are about to buy an appartment in Dubai. Since my husband is the only income source nowadays and the mortgage will be under his name only and so is the Title Deed. We all know that whether in Europe or in China, if a property is bought after the mariage, in case of divorce, it shall be regarded as the couple's common property which means the wife should have share of it (please correct me if wrong). The local law in Dubai doesn't provide such protection to wife and in case of divorce, the property shall remain in the pocket of husband (The husban should of course pay the alimony to the child). My husband is quite open-minded and he supports to do something to protect my right. We are going to set up a will in the court but it is only for the case of death. So here I would like to have your help on the matter: 1. Is there any incorrect points in my statement above? 2. In case of divorce, we can in theory choose the court in France or in China for property division, right? 3. If right, the local law in Dubai will disturb the property division under its regime? 4. Is there any document that we can do in order to certify that this property is a common property of two people, so in case of divorce this shall not be considered only as my husband's? Sorry for such complicated case but I really want to have some information to be secured. Thank you all in advance. Happy new year!!! Hi Rourou, I understand about your concern but if you want solid advice are not not best getting professional advice? I think this is important when it comes to the law in Dubai? just a thoughtt. They is some information here but it doesn't give a lot really. http://www.expatwoman.com/dubai/monthly_finance_legal_tws_legal_consultants_divorce_uae_15698.aspx Do you not have lawyer you can speak to if you are buying one here anyway? Hope it all works out!

I always love threads where Emirates staff and spouses roll over each other to complain. They pay half price at most outlets in Dubai, fly cheap, still get housing whereas most of us don't etc. etc. Thanks You SueB for putting it all in perspective! Pay 10-40 % off at a number of outlets, not "half price at most outlets in Dubai"... because of a plan that [b'>they [/b'>pay into monthly. Out of their own pockets. Any large group of people could get together and arrange the same thing. You are right Sue but it is still a good deal and more than any of my colleagues get at another company in Dubai.

Holy Cow Ladies. Why are you all still here??? There are a whole lot of us who are happy here. We married pilots. Missing important times is the norm, always, shift work for heavens sakes. You signed on. Emirates is short of pilots right now. The 380 fleet has taken the Jam trips and the 777 is the workhorse of the airline so thats what they do... Air time. Max is 900 hrs a year, just like Europe. And fyi, in Canada it is 1,000hrs/hr.....24/7 operation here in Dubai. Meydan accommodation. I have been in them. It is not like a labour camp! went to a party at 'Motown'!! or really called Meydan south. So far the 1st 30 OLD PEOPLE have moved in and most are fine. Yes it is different but the area will grow quickly. Look at what people said about Silicon when they moved there!!! btw, the kitchens in 'Motown' are happy about the huge kitchens compared to what they came from. They seem to be very philosophical about the whole thing. Another excitment I guess. Sure as **** not labour camps for heavens sakes. Driving you get used to..no problem. What seemed like a long way eventually is no problem. I guess you have to ask your husband why he wants to come here. I certainly would not get stuck on pprune. As for planning, we have christmas when he gets home. Until we moved here he never had holidays in the summer. One year we spread out christmas out over 5 days lol....we holiday without him and he joins us. We try hard to be positive rather than live with this huge black cloud over our heads.. If we did that we would be so crippled by anger we would just have to leave :(..... So come. It is not a life sentence. You are not committing yourself to years of horrid living and livingin a slum.....If you are given a bunch of lemons....make the best lemonade you ever made. Make the best of what you have and run with it.!!!! Jump and Arm Pump . I have to add. If you start hanging with negative people you will eventually be pulled in. Find positive people who can work around things.....Look on the bright side of life!!! SueB, please tell what you're smoking so others can have a drag as well  Sue B I am with you 100% here!

Hi everyone , My partner is going for an assessment next week with an airline that will be based In Dubai, he is a pilot so ur would be a big boost to his career. We have a 9month old son, I am a teacher but not planning on returning to work until March. We live in Edinburgh and absolutely love it here, we are both Irish so it means we are v close to home when we want to be. If we did move to Dubai I would most likely be a stay at home mom, at least until we find our feet . I've always supported my partner when it comes to his career, and I do see a possible move to Dubai as a good opportunity for our little family but have so many concerns. I am worried what life will be like for a stay at home Mom over there. The airline provides families with Accomodation in a compound and I am worried about how isolated I would feel living in a gated community like that. I enjoy being able to walk with the buggy, to parks and local shops and cafes etc, going to mum and baby groups etc. I have never visited Dubai but I picture it to be a place where you have to drive everywhere? Is there much green space? And are there many things to do such as baby grouos etc. I would love to hear from women who have been in similar positions, and how they are finding life in Dubai with their children. Thanks for reading x Hi, Good luck for his assessment. DH and I went through this process last year and moved out in April. We do not have any children but I know lots who do. There are lots of things to do here. Just do not fall in to the trap that lots of people do and think "All there is to do is Brunch". Though the brunches are fun. There are lots of baby/toddler groups, I think this website might even run some. You just have to ask around as things are always going on its just difficult to find out what and where. It has just been National Day here. There were lots of celebrations down at JBR including flying displays, face painting and fire works. There are are lots of different areas/compounds that you could possible be put up in. Some are in a better location than others but the villas are nice. All the different areas of accommodation we have visited friends in seem to have a good community spirit. Ours is a less know area and honestly all our neighbors have been fan in helping us settle in. There are a couple of areas/compounds that are new and there is not as many facilities as others but more things are opening all the time in these areas. We are from the UK, and yes Dubai is very different but there are lots of positives about it too. I have to warn you though the paper work when you first join seems never ending! But you will get there. You are right though you do need a car to get around especially some areas where the airline put you up. Not ideal but while you are setting up life here taxis are much cheaper than the UK. There are lots of areas you can walk round though in the city, The Malls, JBR The Marina, and they have lots of parks, such as JLT park or Zabeel park which is a great place to have a walk around, especially when they have events on. If you are interested in working in a school there are always lots of schools hiring in various roles. Some times Part time roles come up as well which might suit you better. Good luck with your move

You need to embrace the lifestyle here. If your husband is a 777 pilot there is a lot of flying as they will be both long haul and short haul..not a lot of days off. 380 is a little better. Things are not as they used to be, hence a lot of disgruntled people. Management is the big issue ATM. Dubai is getting more expensive and schooling is a huge concern. people are heading back home even to pay tax ! I know 3 pilot families that been heading back home after not being happy here, now they are all back! Quite embarrassing for them as they were moaning about most things living over here... I agree with previous comments stay away from Pprune, if you read that you would never join any airline. Basil and Silvstet are right you need to consider what is right for you and your family. My DH works for a commercial airline and we are happy. I have worked in the aviation industry for over 7 years and know that there are a lot worst packages and T &C's out there at the moment. A lot of people moan that its "got worst" and maybe packages differ now from what they were but they are still some of the best ones out there. Do your research and weigh up why you are moving here, if it suits you then Dubai is an easy place to live (Once you have sorted all paper work and visa etc. :) ) Its not like the UK which we miss and love but we do love living here and get to visit home a lot. Plus family and friends love to visit! Good luck with what you chose,:)

i need tips to loose weight (15kg) as fast as possible. i weigh 85kg currently my height is 1.69m or 5.54 feet. i need to get down to 65kg that means loosing 15kg before the year runs out Uch, that is a lot of weight to lose in a short amount of time i think. you can do it but not with any method that will be sustainable able. If you are doing it because you have frock to fit into for NYE then be prepared for it to pile back on. For me I do not calorie count as I find that too restrictive. If it was me I would 1)Cut out eating Wheat-this helps me eat a lot more vegetables and fruit as snacks 2)Avoid foods with high saturated fats, such as cheese 3) Do a little bit of exercise every day, even if its a brisk walk 4)Try and avoid having diary in hot drinks 5)Drink green tea 6)If you feel hungry have a glass of water first then see how you feel afterwards Maybe some of these will work for you. Everyone has their own "tricks". But I will do this if I need to fit into a dress for an event. Good luck. I hope you lose the weight you want to!

Not only is it sometimes/oftentimes a necessity for both parents to work, how about this for a progressive thought: [b'>Woman have the RIGHT to continue their professional careers after having children.[/b'> And NO we don't have to make excuses or have "legitimate reasons" (we need the money) or be apologetic (I feel guilty because I'm not at home with the kids). SERIOUSLY? Take a look at the calendar...it's 2015. I can't believe in a metropolitan, multicultural society women have to justify why they put their children in daycare/preschool/nursery. If I was this woman's employer, I would fire her. Not because she voiced her opinion (everyone is allowed one) but she went on a self-described "rant" about her clients on a radio station. Where is her professionalism? I would never want my children to be left in the care of a crass, immature, disrespectful woman. agreed, it was very unprofessional!

You need to check where you are living what companies will supply you. At ours we couldn't get the one which gave us British sports (I cannot remember which one, I will ask DH). DH loves football too, so he had to have the sports channels. In the end we went with a company called TV one. All the sports and some great channels for me too!

Frankly find her rant quite offensive. I have two kids. We thought I would stay home but we have to pay ridiculous rent and school fees. We want our kids to live in a decent home (no we are not in a 5bed room house in Jum/ Umm Suq) and go to good schools. We want to give them the best we possibly can. I have to go back to work so we can possibly save for their future and ours. Its breaking my heart that I will have to probably leave my 2 yr old in day care till 5 and my 5yr old in after school club. What do I do? To the ranting lady, find another job. http://qz.com/434056/working-moms-have-more-successful-daughters-and-more-caring-sons-harvard-business-school-study-says/ You should be proud if you have to go back to work!

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I -think- buying fireworks here is impossible due to safety and all that. I think you also have to have a licence and permission to set them off at home? I think there's lanterns in Dragonmart if you're happy to let something off into the air this evening :D Otherwise check with the golf clubs or even JBR beach, I imagine there'll be a show at one of them. Thats what i thought! I think the ranches sometimes does something for the 5th November?

It's my first year in Dubai. Does anyone know if anywhere (like hotels etc) celebrates this night? I know it is probably a no but it was such a tradition with my family back at home I would love to carry it on here. I cannot really host celebrations at my own apartment! If my memory serves me correctly doesn't Arabian Ranches and Emirates Golf Club do a sort of bonfire night with fireworks etc oh really? I might have a look at that!

theres a school in ajman completely run by the family that owns it that caters to super low income pakistani/afghani/indian families, especially trying to help the girls, who often get neglected education-wise in these communities. they fund everything themselves, and have the lowest tuition fee in the country (something like 500dhs a month!) they are always in need of resources- anything and everything is always appreciated. i am in dubai and try to send stuff up there as much as possible - if anyone is interested let me know, i'm happy to collect stuff and pass it on up. Do you have contact details for that school, I have some things they would be able to have too. :)

i've not been in the same dilemma per se but after 39 years of marriage i would think it would be wiser to just compromise and move down here with him and enjoy ur time together in this new city... the next six to seven months are a lovely time to be here anyway with the city buzzing with activity and lots of opportunities to see and do things together outdoors... and maybe if you don't feel like it's working for u then u could just head back home once the brutal summer starts to set in... 18 months is not a long time when u consider how long you two have been together! I agree. Just look at it as an adventure. Dubai is a city you can easily enjoy for a short while. I always believe it depends what you make of it! and horizonmum2 is right, great time of year to come as it has cooled down here!

I am sure many of you have heard yet again of another tragedy involving a little child choking on a single grape in the UK. The little one is now in an induced coma due to the grape lodging in his throat. His parents have been told that he may never be the same again. Please mums, dads, grand parents and maids please all remind each other the importance of slicing these grapes length ways before putting them in little ones lunch boxes. If a grape gets lodged in their tiny throat it can block their airway. It doesn't matter how great your little one is at chewing either. Please pass message to primary schools and nurseries so they remind and warn parents of these dangers when packing their little ones lunch box. If we all do our part we hopefully will prevent such a tragedy occurring again. xxxx This is such sad news. I would also advice parents to learn what to do if your child is choking. Its surprising how many people don't know what to do! I have been on a first aid course and so glad I did as I stopped my DH from choking once! You can learn online too, but helps to do a course as your remember it better. You could save a life!

It's a lot cheaper if you do it yourself. There is a LOT of running around to make sure all the paperwork is completed and it does take time, however if you want to save 1000's then I do recommend it. If you want more detailed info email me and I am happy to land a hand. I have helped 3 friends send their dogs back to the uk. And 'no' I don't run any kind of business in regards to pet exports, it's just I was shocked to see how much various companies charge and amazed to see how cheaply you can DIY. If you want to chat, let me know and I will add my email address. Hi Miffmac. We have a dog too and was wondering what the paper work was like to send her home. Can you share the information please?

We might have an opportunity to leave Dubai for Hongkong and while I've been thinking for a while that Dubai isn't what it used to be Hongkong wouldn't have come to mind when bringing up a young family. Do any of you have experience knowledge what it is like and how it compares. I would really like to get some feedback on this. Thanks so much Hi Cleopatra, I am an Expat in Dubai and lots of people bring up young families here. I think it is a great place to bring up a young family but it depends what you value and what you personally want. How long are you planning on going for? We are planning on staying here a long time so it suits us as English is spoken here by many and its only 6 hours away from our home country. How far away will you be? Hong Kong is a fun and exciting city. I have been many times and have a close friend who lived there from the age of 7-9 years. she remembers it fondly. For us though it is a 12 hour flight home which means we cannot get back for short breaks like we can from Dubai. For us we feel much further away from home in Hong Kong. Plus it is a very different culture to Dubai. Good luck which ever you chose..

?? I think you've just put me off this airline with this sentence. ECigarettes are probhibited goods in the hold and are not allowed to be smoked or charged on board. What would you do if you set off a smoke alarm? Made In Sheffield, the Travellers' prayer is said pre take off on board Etihad and Air Arabia as well. Possibly also Qatar? Mine is smokeless and the FIRST time I used it. So, no, it would not set off an alarm. Do you not think that lighters and matches should be prohibited items also? I have never, in 35 years of flying, ever had a lighter (or matches on the odd occasion) removed from my hand luggage. Gee! They are restricted though, you can only carry one lighter or one box of safety matches and it has to be on your person, they are not allowed in any bags.

Good morning, Our maid has been told that our local Western Union will no longer be sending money to Zimbabwe. This puts her in quite a quandary. Any advice from those who hail from Zim (or who have maids from Zim)? Any help gratefully received. I work with a girl from there and she said she still sends money home from Western Union

I have just received my old passport back after just one week of processing which is fantastic. However they have cut the corners of this passport which incidentally wasn't expired/damaged or needed any changes( had two clear pages left). I knew that impending travel I needs more pages for Visa's on arrival etc. My concern is that now my residents visa will not be valid. I expected to be able to carry both passports together as my husband did when his passport became to full. Our residents visa were renewed in December. Whats annoying is I clearly stated I had a current valid residence visa in my passport! Question is will this become problematic for me, do I have to have my residence visa transferred to my replacement passport when it arrives(hopefully tomorrow)? Hey, I have had the same problem with my USA Visa. Its not a problem. Its just annoying as you have to carry both passports. One with your visa and one that is valid. I also have to carry my marriage certificate as well as my names do not match!

Thank you ladies for your replies. We have looked at pprune and not sure if this going to be a good move....but then again where is aviation is a good move! We have lived in Dubai before and love it and are well aware of the pitfalls, but life is not always greener on the other side. Thank you again ? HI dxbrw. We have just moved earlier on this year to DXB. My hubby is on the 777 roster. So far its been ok. I think its nice as there is a mixture of long haul flights and turn arounds. Average month he has had around 11 days off at home and that does not include rest days or turn around days. With regards to other long-haul airlines in the UK I think the rosters are fine and its just a hazard with the job. as you know. I have been quite happy so far with EK. In the UK it was always just long haul and could be away for a long time. He has only had one very long trip when he was away for 5 days on a SIN-BNE-SIN. There are a couple of long trips like this but he has had 1 in 6 months. Hope this helps I see you are still wearing your Rose Tinted Spectacles Catty! And long may it continue, however I suspect it's only a matter of time until you see things as they really are (perhaps it will be around the point where your husband only gets 50% of his leave for the year, or where month after month you can't plan anything as you only get his roster 7 days before the month starts, or where month after month he works with the minimum legal days off and works the maximum legal flight hours, or where he misses Christmas/birthday/anniversaries, or where you discover there's been a detrimental change to his contract that wasn't publicised...) Thank you Yellowledbetter. But I am not wearing my rose tinted glasses I am just fully aware of what else is on offer. We thought about coming here for 2 years and weigh up every option and to be honest I have had no surprises. I also worked in the aviation industry for 8 years and have seen what the other packages are outside of our home country and for what we wanted and for our lifestyle EK was the best deal for us. Being a pilot no matter what airline you work for unfortunately means there are always occasions/birthdays/weddings/anniversaries/Christmas. you will miss as its shift work and airlines are operational 24 hours a day, everyday! dxdrw- with regards to accommodation it really is pot luck where you get allocated. We were lucky and got put in a great location and so have a couple of others who have moved recently. However some others have been put further out-not the most convenient location-and yes the gardens are small!

Thanks everyone for contributing. Just wanted to say that I emailed directly to the Dubai customs office and got a reply from them that it is ok to bring my plant to here. I printed their response and now my plant is happily living in my living room. That's useful to know. Thanks

Did you take your plant as carry on? I know of someone who did this but the plant was large so they had to buy an extra seat.

Can someone explain to me how a person has an impending move to another country yet does not know the fundamental basics of that country? Please explain to me how you can move to the Middle East in this day and age of technology not know that a country is an Islamic one. Then, in this day and age where the media is full of information about different religions and cultures not have a basic grasp of the values of that religion? Then having grasped the basic values and understood how to use Google not be able to find all the information required on the sponsorship process and laws of that country pertaining to sponsoring a spouse? Recently a poster asked what would be the consequences of getting caught shipping her food and wine, really? Not even arrived and are trying to buck the system and insult the host country by breaking its laws. Then there was a poster wanting to bring a houseplant with her because she is attached to it? Then we had another poster asking where she could find somewhere that served booze during the day in Ramadan? Talk about bizarre posts recently. I was the person with a bizarre question about a plant, and guess what- I asked directly Dubai customs and yes, they are fine with me bringing it in on the plane without any paperwork. While google the almighty said the opposite. This is the reason why we have this forum, to share personal experience. If I want to be lectured, I will try some other places, and not the forum. So if you don't have to say anything constructive, why bother writing at all? Sometime's too much conflicting information is so confusing. I found that before I moved out here. Plus I always think its better to ask than assume!

Hi ladies, Following a recent thread on NY where I found a few tips, please advise me on must dos and sees with little ones. I have been to NY once about 20 years ago for just a few days so am really unfamiliar with the city. Any attractions that are a must? We are staying at the Belvedere Hotel, so any advice and guidance about the area would be fab! Thanks! Hey Central Park Zoo is fun and its cool to have a picnic in the park afterwards. There is also the boat house in central park where you can hire a little boat and go rowing. If they are into space and planes then the Intrepid Sea, Air and Space museum is a fun way to spend a day. If you dare to take them to a toy shop then Toys R us on Times Square is impressive and another fun toy shop is FAO Schwartz. Its just behind the Apple shop on 5th Ave. Its the toy shop in the film BIG. I think they still have the piano there you can play on. Enjoy

Good idea to stay positive oceanview. We have just joined EK and we were put in temporary accommodation in Oud Metha, not the best location but it was fine. We were expecting to be in there for a few months but it only ended up being 4 weeks. Things do take time within EK but overall we are happy and I still think it’s a good company.
