I've lived here 6 years and never come across "compound living" in Dubai - there's a lot of well-established, gated communities that are favoured by expats here but not in the same sense that you may have seen in KSA. You'll find most, if not all, communities have their own FB groups you can join and meet-up with other expats living in the area. There are lots of recreational clubs, like golf, polo etc. that you may join, and also places like the Arabian Ranches and Emirates Hills (Springs, Meadows, Lakes) have "members clubs" and centers... For example The Lakes have Fitness First and Reform as their central location, which has a supermarket also etc. Simply put - it's very easy to get out and mingle in Dubai!!

I would advise against buying a puppy from a breeder here in the UAE, especially since 'reputable breeders' don't exist at all. Visit dog shelters and groups like K9 Friends or Little Angels to see what doggies they have in desperate need of a home.

Oh no! Sorry to hear that - i always find that with any treatment for tightening or weight loss etc. you need to commit to a healthy lifestyle and exercise. Defeats the purpose of trying what should be a 'quick fix/help' but just something to bear in mind. My advice would be to establish a skincare routine that will help you to lift and tighten those wrinkles. Check out The Ordinary products on Cult Beauty since having the right mix of their products can really help improve your skin

Not sure about home but I know a lot of yoga/pilates studios offer classes with baby in tow - might be worth checking out one of them first with the help of a professional to guide you to get started? then once you're confident exercising with little one, you can adapt the routines for home

this was a topic on the news this week actually -- how a couple of business professionals will do intermittent fasting and as a company they will extend that fast for 24 hours once a week which they then break together. i couldn't do it myself but good luck and respect to those who manage to!

yikes! sorry to hear this is happening. it's super frustrating that they're cloud-seeding but not taking into account the damage being done to people's homes. in terms of your landlord, A/C units and maintenance should fall under him so just be persistent. if you have small children or pets in the house, that's more of a reason for you to demand he fix the A/C issue asap

We live in The Springs and there's always lots of activity around the communities for Halloween, although each neighbourhood is gated so unless you have a friend/family member living in one you might have trouble getting in. Also, I hear Motor City is a great place to be for trick-or-treating for Halloween as residents generally hold events and costume comps etc. worth checking out on community FB groups

Welcome to EW! First off - July will mean super, super hot temperatures when you arrive... But you'll have the joy of knowing it's only going to get cooler come October. For things to do while you're visiting, I'd recommend definitely experiencing the main attractions - Burj Khalifa's At The Top, Dubai Aquarium, The Dubai Mall can all be done in the same day. Then I'd head to The Pointe for dining and to see Atlantis, or Club Vista Mare for Marina views (both are on Palm Jumeirah) - alternatively, visit Atlantis by going to Aquaventure waterpark. That can take a good day up, too. I'd also recommend Souk Madinat for a daytime dinner and see Burj Al Arab, then enjoy a desert safari one night. You won't be able to see everything in just 3 days but can definitely can the main things in there.

Honestly - head to Lulu's Hypermarket next to MOE and buy the Mega Gel. It's the BEST thing and actually works!! We couldn't find anything that worked, and tried everything from Carrefour/Spinney's etc. So the trip to Lulu's was so worth it

My favourite go-to for lovely dresses is Reiss, you should find something within your price range. Alternatively my bridesmaids had their dresses from Monsoon - so definitely worth a look for something graduation worthy there. If I were to choose between hair or makeup, I'd pay for my hair - and do my make-up myself. You know what you're most comfortable in and trust me, you'll be so focused on your daughter on her graduation you'll probably forget what your make-up looks like

Motor City is a lovely place and with the new addition of the First Avenue Mall, it's really got a lot of options and things to do now... i don't live in MC but know the area well, and the gated communities are really lovely. The area is split into 3 places; uptown, green community and business park... The latter is incomplete but the first two are popular choices. Green community is rather expensive and filled with villas/townhouses, whereas uptown motor city is much more affordable with apartment options. There's lots of food options, supermarket, ACE hardware, Nando's and it's a lovely spot to hang out in cooler months

Hello fellow Brit! - I'd personally recommend Springs/Meadows/Lakes or Arabian Ranches, they're heavily populated with expatriates - a lot are British or Western, and have lovely community vibes and safe spaces and playgrounds for kids. - Schools in Springs are Dubai British School, or JESS is quite a popular one. - Cost of living is med-high... Meaning, there are ways to bring your spends down without having to go overboard like a lot of people. It's easy to spend here. A family sized car you could get for 60k - 80k like a Hyundai or something, Volvos around 140k+ - housing for 2 bed villa is cc. 110k pa, 3 bed up to 130k pa and 4 bed above 140k pa depending on the area you want ot live in. School fees I can't comment on just yet, and definitely can't comment on the fitness club. Hahhaa. - Yes expat partners work, the trailing spouse is something of a myth now here in UAE... They're still around, but more and more women are working and going back to work here. - Very common for maids, nannies and drivers - live-ins are popular, or you can hire a weekly visit from an agency maid - The alcohol license is VERY real and is very easy to get for a fee :) just visit any one of the alcohol shops Weather is a killer in summer but that's the time for hibernation and Netflix. The cool, winter months make up for it :) lots of stuff to do when it's pleasant outside. Even when it's hot, there's plenty to do inside.

Does FaceTime still not come pre-installed if you buy the device from the Apple Store or Etisalat?
I was under the impression FaceTime isn't installed on devices supplied from within the UAE - if you buy a phone from UK then it is. Although I think Souq has some at a higher cost that has FaceTime installed

Is FaceTime also completely blocked in Dubai?
Any VOIP service is blocked here. some Apple devices bought outside of the UAE that had facetime already installed may work, but any device bought in UAE wont have the app installed nor will you be able to install it yourself. whatsapp is still blocked, the news have already confirmed that it was speculation... a shame that we cant have access to a free service like the rest of the world

Thanks ladies for the advice - I'm aware we do have to receive 12 months notice if they wish to evict us, thankfully it looks promising that a buyer is lined up. @cruiseaddict, distressing is the right word - even more so when we've had different signs turn up on our driveway from agents that get in the way, block the drive way etc. Very frustrating. They are insistent you're right, despite us warning them to give us advanced warning. Perhaps I stress too much as we have a dog in the house, and I hate the thought of people just turning up, placing signs, knocking on the door... It stresses her out, and my husband and I are at work. I have my fingers crossed it's going to be finished soon... Or I fear I'm going to end up yelling at the next agent that attempts to visit!!

I highly recommend My Second Home, they're worth the money; your dog plays in day care, you have CCTV access to their bedrooms at night and the team take care of your dogs meal plan as per your instructions. Whatever you do, do NOT leave your dog with an unlicensed individual who offers to pet sit for you.

I fear I might receive criticism for recommending this - but from personal experience, I found doing the C9 plan effective in kick-starting my weight loss. Sure, it was a quick-hit, unsustainable way of losing a few pounds, but it gave me the motivation to get going... You say you don't have enough time to exercise, do you work in an office? Do you sit down most of the day? I do, and I find getting up and doing a lap of the complex (studio city) for 15 minutes ever 2 hours, just a walk, helps to keep the blood flowing. Stand up at work, stand up during meetings. But these ladies are right, if you are so determined to lose weight, you will adjust your routine so you can accomplish your goals. Good luck!

If I'm honest, you're overthinking things... It's very rare to find neighbours who will actually care who you are or where you live. People tend to keep to their own business. Not everyone has the same customs as you here now, so don't expect anyone to behave the same way you're used to back home. We lived in an apartment block for 3 years and perhaps only saw or spoke to our neighbours no more than 50 times in total. In our villa, I've spoken to our neighbours once in 1 year because I chucked our dog's ball into their garden. Saying all of that though, I respect your desire to try - the Saudi man might be a Muslim, but I'm sure he has manners. If he was uncomfortable, he just wouldn't answer. Remember, Dubai is a transient place... So often neighbours come and go, meaning forging any sort of relationship with someone is difficult.

Sorry I can't help much on this - but I have a question... Will you be moving here with a partner? He may have better insurance that you can also be covered by... I'm on my husband's insurance despite being sponsored by my company as it's much better. Also, ask your employer if there's an option to upgrade your insurance - they pay the standard package, and then out of your salary they deduct the additional amount to upgrade to a plan that will include coverage. That may work out considerably less over time
