Oh and a simple answer to anyone who has a problem with it "if you don't like it, don't look at me" :)

Pregnancy is a totally natural thing, none of us would be here without it. It's not an illness, or a condition or a deformity or anything else that ignorant narrow minded might deem it to be. It's beauty as nature intended it to be so why hide it?!?!!

Genuinely shocked that this is being debated... Only in Dubai (or maybe only on EW)... Someone should start this topic on mumsnet and see the response.

I really don't find it distatefulat all... I am surprised so many of you do. I think it's beautiful and in any case it's showed off at pools and beaches where most people are showing off their non-pregnant bellies any way in all shapes and sizes. Each to their own I guess.

Think I am going to be the only one that says no. I think showing a pregnant belly is distasteful. I agree. Some on the models I've seen in magazines who are pregnant and wear bikinis look ok (generally their bumps are tiny and they have slim legs to match) but for the rest of us "normal" girls, it's not a classy look IMO. It's up there with tight tank tops with half the stomach protruding from the bottom of the tank and the belly button on show though the fabric. *eek* :(

hhhmmmm i always read these thypes of threads and ask myself, what if men got pregnant? would they worry about being inappropriate, showing off, unattractive etc etc i think, probably nope. they would just wear whatever the heck they liked/felt comfortable in/was clean and never give it another thought. and i say, damn skippy baby! wear a bikin if you want. wether you are fat, slim, old, young pregant, non pregnant, green brown, blue etc etc etc. because, it just doesnt matter :)

What on earth is offensive or distasteful about a pregnant belly?! I wore my bikini whilst pregnant and felt great. It honestly didn't even occur to me that other people might not like the view! My thoughts EXACTLY!!!

...and our temperature gauges seemed to rise a bit too when pregnant, well mine did, so it's not easy to tolerate too much heat as youre already hot. One has to hope that most people now are sun safe concious whether pregnant or not. I too don't get this 'parade' business... cover up/decorum/show off/discretion etc? In a bikini you are at pool or beach no? Not waltzing through a mall or whatever. Swimwear of anykind is suitable attire for such places and it's a personal thing as to whether you would cover up or not. I do get it if someone feels their full of baby belly is a private thing, and to cover would be their most comfortable choice for themselves. Whether you are small, fat, inbetween, roll covered, marked and scarred it is no ones business but each individuals as to what they themselves feel good in and want to wear at a beach. Cultural and religious conciderations aside, of course. We've had the thread on fatties in bikinis, now the pregnant one...whats next? gonna ban everyone over the age of 60 from wearing a swim suit at all? Personally, as I have said before...there is nothing more beautiful than a pregnant tum. Love it and love to see women who do embrace it and enjoy their pregnancys doing things they love, and if thats the beach with their belly out...more power to them. and if its the beach with belly covered...fabulous too...whatever is most comfortable and 'right' for each individual. Well said aroha! "...whatever is most comfortable and 'right' for each individual"

I'm not gettting the parading around and showing off bit?! Just because you are wearing bikini with a bump?! I don't think it's "showing off". I also don't think women should necessarily do it specifically because they are 'proud' of their pregnant bodies. I just think that if a woman normally wears a bikini at the beach, there's nothing different in wearing it pregnant or not. I am genuinely surprised that (taking cultural and religious issues aside) women here, other mothers, find the exposure of a pregnant belly offensive...more offensive than one that's not pregnant. Pregnant or not, all who spend time in the sun should do it safely but yes, pregnant women's skin can be more sensitive. and our temperature gauges seemed to rise a bit too when pregnant, well mine did, so it's not easy to tolerate too much heat as youre already hot. Sorry about this ladies, totally disagree with showing off pregnant tummies. A friend of mine was warned NOT to bare her bump to the sun, but didn't listen. She went on to have a baby with severe sunburn. Can't tell you how guilty she felt :(. Her DS still bears the scars. Needless to say she kept covered for the 2nd one. Really?? I'm genuinely astounded. Since reading your post I've done a (superficial) scour of the internet and can't find one reference to sunburn in an unborn baby. Plenty on avoiding sunburn because of the usual health risks including dehydration affecting the baby, but nothing on the baby getting burnt. I just can't imagine the UV rays getting through all of the layers of skin, fat, fluid, abdominal wall, fluid, uterine wall, lining, fluid...

Do whatever makes you feel comfortable and I'm sure you will look beautiful. I wore a bikini when pregnant and took all the appropriate measures to protect myself and bubs from sun damage and we are both fine. I also loved that my cute belly bump detracted attention from my not so cute expanding butt!!!

Being six and a half months pregnant myself, I'm enjoying going to the pool in a bikini and getting a healthy glow but I am careful not to over-do it and I tend to stay in the shade. And to those who think it is inappropriate - I'm sorry, but if I have to be subjected to seeing men in budgie smugglers with huge guts, then I don't think there is anything wrong with me stripping down to a bikini

By the way it's not because you are wearing a tankini that you will not get sunburned if you have sensitive skin... as my midwife also reminded me about my C section scar but factor 50 on if you are going in the sun even if you are covered! Better be safe than sorry!

I don't think it's other peoples opinion you should think of, but your self and the baby. Mothers-to-be can have extra sensitive skin, and if you are one of them, you should use a higher factor. Hope you'll have a nice holiday :-)

think women should be happy they are pregnant but proud? it doesn't take any special skill to get pregnant..does it? Ouch! Actually getting pregnant is one of the hardest things in the world for some couples, many never achieve it! I think pregnant women look fantastic and should be proud to show themselves off.

The amount of miscarriages and sickness etc etc etc some suffer in pregnancy, one can be proud but does not have to parade around. There are many who are not fortunate to become pregnant for many reasons. Surprised, one should write about a skill as many people do not find getting pregnant easy. think women should be happy they are pregnant but proud? it doesn't take any special skill to get pregnant..does it?

Absolutely wear what you feel comfortable in, my first preganancy was horrible and you wouldn't have caught me dead in a bikini or even partically dressed in the sun haha my second was totally different I had a great neat little bump and wore a bikini and felt good about it. Later in pregnancy its more about feeling comfortable so maybe an all in one would give your belly support or you might be luckly and not need any :) Do what you feel good about :) In really interested to see the comments about not wanting to see a bump in all its glory, I had no idea people were put off by it, I mean there are surely much worse things to be seen on the beach ;) lol edited by JShepherd on 11/04/2011 Oh, HALLELUIAH! My first pregnancy I was the size of a small condo and I hated, hated, hated the way I looked. I am hoping this time round I'm going to have one of those neat little bumps and reading your post gives me hope! Hurrah! I really don't get what's so distasteful about a bump. I honestly don't. To me, distasteful is butt cheeks hanging out the bottom of shorts; thongs; budgie smugglers; that kind of thing. Not the most natural thing in the world. A - completely agree with you. I don't understand what's distasteful about it either. Being comfortable in your skin when pregnant and dressing appropriately to the occasion does not equal being an exhibitionist. B - SO EXCITED FOR YOU and Mr Cat!! Congratulations lovely lady!! xxx As they say Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. :) Congrats DC..
