Thanks so much ladies you've given me a lot to think about. She might end up getting about 5 different presents now as am torn between the CD of 1961, newspaper cover, photo book of her life.....and several pieces of jewellery (Tiffany's / watch / bangle / locket) - I'll tell her she has you guys to thank for her variety of gifts! ;) xx

Having already reached this milestone a few years back, my 60th birthday and my 40th wedding anniversary which would fall in the same year. And, obviously, that my darling husband is here to celebrate both occasions. Just beautiful. I wish that for you too x

I'd like to shag Jeff Bridges. Never heard of anyone else fancying Jeff Bridges......me too!!! But, seriously, had my 50th last year and didn't need anything but wanted have something representative. My daughter contacted my 4 best friends and they all bought me a beautiful Tiffany key locket and long chain. I absolutely love it and every time I wear it I feel their connection.

so many nice ideas. It took a lovely little sports car to get me out from sobbing under the covers when I was 40, so can't imagine what I will be like at 50.

An album about 1961 including things like: http://www.thepeoplehistory.com/1961.html A CD of the #1 hits of 1961: US - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Hot_100_number-one_singles_of_1961_(U.S.) UK - http://www.chartmagic.co.uk/lyrics/1961_hits.html Australia - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_number-one_singles_in_Australia_during_the_1960s#1961 *Google for other countries* A framed copy of the front page of the newspaper the day she was born (most newspapers have scanned copies that can be purchased for a nominal fee). Two framed photos/prints of her home town. One in 1961 and one in 2011. A picture of you and your siblings (if any) when you were young and one more recent one. Have it mounted between 2 pieces of glass then framed with each person in the photo writing directly behind where they are on the print saying what makes your mum special to them. An antique locket with special photos already in place. A digital photo frame filled with scanned old photos. A classic watch that can be worn every day engraved with a personal message.

She lives on Stornoway and is getting married this year so we did some wedding shopping - shoes, undies, jewellery, bags etc etc That sounds nice. Not too many bling shops in Stornoway, lol. :)

I am thinking down the sentimental route now, thanks guys. Have to make it count as my work won't let me fly home until 4 days after her birthday :( Hopefully though it will work out better for her as she then gets to stretch out her birthday a bit longer! Could you and her maybe have a special day out? Just the two of you. Choose a nice town to go to and have a nice meal and maybe see a show or the likes. I did something along similair lines for my 50th but it was an extended family and friends day out. It was a blast and one of the best days of my life. I'm finding the older I'm gettting the only thing I ever really want is more time with my family, it really does become as simple as that. <em>edited by DesertRose1958 on 10/01/2011</em>

If by something practical you mean a new vacuum cleaner then I would say no, lol. Something that she can see regularly and remind her would be good like a piece of jewellery or what about arranging for a portrait to be done, it could be one for your mother or of her children or all together, just whatever you think she would like best. I would not buy a pen as I have a bad memory of buying my DH an expensive pen for his birthday and he lost it within a few weeks. :)

Had my 55th yesterday so I think at our age its better to give a fantastic dinner at the Burj with the family or a weekend away with everyone. Really we dont need anything at our age just lovely times to remember the family together and lots of photos. Even give one of those photo fames where the photos keep changing and fill wit with family times together

It all depends on how much money she has to spend on herself normally. If she's quite wealthy and could buy 'luxury' goods then I wouldn't go down this route, I'd think a bit harder and get something very personal that she would never do for herself. If she's as poor as a church mouse I'd splash the cash and buy her an item of total luxury that she'd never in a million years be able to buy for herself.

Depends if she needs something particular then that would be good. But if not I'd go sentimental, if you put some thought into it and have chosen something individually then I am sure it would mean the world to her. I cherish everything my DD gives me, whether it's a CD (chosen by dad), one of her little drawings or even her grumpy little attitude in the morning.

Thanks ladies, already given me a lot to think about! Was thinking I'd spend about 2000aed as want to do something really special. Do you think its better to get something sentimental or something practical that she needs? My mum would be pleased with anything but just want to get it right!

We took my mum to New York for a long weekend, it was great fun and she still talks about now and that was nearly years ago..... OMG where did that time go!!! But a nice piece of gold jewellery I am sure would be very much apreciated, I love it when I am given jewellery.

For my Dad's 60th my sister and I clubbed in and got him a holiday to Egypt... something he always wanted to do but never seemed to get round to. Can you think of anything like that for your Mum?

Seriously - not sure how much you want to spend but how about a really nice gold bangle that she can wear everyday. after all 50 years married is a golden wedding...... If you can do it - how about getting a whole collection of photos of her through her life and getting them put into a book of her life. I love those photobooks that you can dip in and out of. <em>edited by Clairehdp on 10/01/2011</em>
