Good afternoon. I am a Peruvian citizen living in Oman. My husband (a UK citizen) and I are expecting our first child. My husband's company has told him that we need to get the child's passport and visa arranged before they can provide medical insurance for the child. As a result, getting our child's passport once she is born is a matter of urgency as she will be without medical insurance until she has a passport and Omani visa.

As you may be aware, Peru does not have an embassy or consulate in the Sultanate, and I have been informed that Peruvian citizens living in Oman fall under the jurisdiction of the Peruvian embassy in Saudi Arabia. This will likely make it a difficult and lengthy process to get a Peruvian passport for our child. Therefore, getting our child a UK passport seems like the best option. As far as we can tell, she is eligible for one due to my husband's nationality.

We live far away from Muscat, so the more of the process that can be done by post/online without having to visit Muscat in person, the better for us as it is a long distance and the opening times of the UK embassy clash with my husband's work duty hours. One issue however, is that reliable postal services in this area are few and far between.

Despite the fact that we have been married since 2012, we have never visited the UK together as we have either lived in Oman or Peru, and have travelled elsewhere to meet up with my husband's family. Therefore, finding a British citizen that has known me personally for over two years to act as countersignatory may prove difficult. We have tried using the gov.uk online passport application tool to determine the correct process to follow. However, it is a little unclear to us whether some aspects of the process will apply to obtaining a passport for our child. We are concerned that if we do not follow the correct process in the right way, it will lead to delay in our daughter receiving her passport and greater expense on our part.

If anyone has any experience with obtaining a UK or Peruvian passport for their child while in Oman and can offer advice, it would be greatly appreciated. Our situation appears to be an unusual one, and we are feeling a little lost about how to move forward with the application.

Thanks in advance.
