We are considering a move to Muscat and I need some expert advice from those of you in the know please!

We have a daughter who will be going into sixth form.

How long does it take at school time to get from Muscat Hills to the British School? Are there car pool arrangements that you know of between families? What exactly is the Enrollment Fee? Is it refundable when your child graduates or does it go against the first term fees or do you never get it back and we should just add it to the cost of moving schools?

I am sure I will have other questions, but at the moment those are the key answers I need.

Thanks

Many thank for the reply. We are busy arranging a trip to visit, meet with the schools and have a look at housing. It is a bit of a leap of faith with the school because we are very much dependent on what she achieves in her GCSEs and what course options are available for the next stage. GCSE results don't come out until about 26 August or so, very close to the start of term, and it makes changing schools a nightmare for the entire holidays because you are coming back not knowing if they are even going to get in. Whilst it was like that for my older kids who are now at university, when you factor in changing schools, moving internationally and still not knowing if you have a place and it gets considerably more stressful! I suppose in some ways it doesn't matter where we choose to live since I won't know which, or even if any school will offer a definite place until a couple of days before the school year starts!

I find private schooling here expensive - I doubt you will find much difference between the top schools here. Two years is not long over the "grand scheme of things" and if the school doesn't have a bus service from the area of your choice, then I suggest finding and a car and driver. I have a driver and car to take my kids to and from school. There are many and they are easy to find and not expensive. I am sure the school can even recommend someone reliable to you. The man I use was recommended by the school and collects other students as well daily.

Thank you Mrs B I guess Muscat hills would be too far from the British school then in the morning rush hour. My daughter is a teenager and not very good at getting up at the best of times! Muscat hills suits us as a housing area, except for the school thing. I am trying to decide if it worth putting up with the commute for the first two years of residence or if it will drive me bonkers and I would be better off in MSQ, Shatti Al Qurum or Azaiba.

Peak hour morning and afternoon traffic is a nightmare in Muscat so what would normally take you 10-15 minutes to drive, will take an hour or more during these peak times. My morning drive to work takes more than one hour but if I go during the day or on weekends, it take a maximum of 15 minutes. Schools usually have buses (for an added fee) but if your doesn't (the school my kids attend doesn't) then finding a car and driver is very easy and doesn't cost too much. I have a private driver who comes to the house and collects them each morning and then picks them up from school and drops them home in the afternoons. I have found the school fees here are reasonably high in comparison to other Gulf countries but not unaffordable. Usually enrolment and administrative fees are not refundable from any schools anywhere (not in my experience at least). Also, here the schools charge annually and even if you arrive mid year, i.e. starting in Semester #2, usually you will still need to pay the full year's tuition costs. I negotiated with my kids' school and only paid the full year for one of them. Will be happy to answer any other questions if you have them. This is not a very active forum, sadly.
