I am moving to Qatar in a few months and am trying to find out if my medications are going to be available for me there. I currently take medications for depression and adult ADD. I assume the ADD meds, Adderoll, will not be available, but I read somewhere that perhaps instant release Ritalin might be. Anyone know?

I also take Wellbutrin and Lexapro (generics). Are antidepressants available? If I need to get off of them, I better begin now.

Thanks!

Yes, you can only get ADD meds at Hamad Psychiatric Hospital. I get Concerta for myself from there. Bring AS MUCH paperwork & evidence as you can - the psych I saw had very very little understand...
Hi @jackqui48162. I'm Gaurav Pandit from Mumbai, India. I'm going to come to Qatar for a software job. I'm on prescription meds (Psychiatrists) from last 2 years. The doctor had prescribed me a medicine named "Inspiral" here which is composed of "Methylphenidate". I have a valid prescription from my Doctor. 1. Can I bring my meds with me to Doha, Qatar? & 2. Will the doctors in Hamad Psychiatric Hospital will prescribe the same salt medicine to me after a consultation? Please help me as I'm going to join the company soon. You can message me at, Email ID:- [email protected] or Contact no:- +91 8169672901. Thank you!

Hi everyone, I know this is an older post but I am living in doha and urgently need to contact someone about this - I wrote to doha mums but have not heard back. Is there a specific doctor that you have to go to at Hamad ? Thanks in advance for the help!

Yes, you can only get ADD meds at Hamad Psychiatric Hospital. I get Concerta for myself from there. Bring AS MUCH paperwork & evidence as you can - the psych I saw had very very little understanding of adult ADD and I had to be VERY clear re my needs and my diagnosis. If you are going to have to change to Ritalin/concerta then ask your doc at home to write a referral with the DOSAGE that he recommends you take. Regarding repeat prescriptions - this is what the psych told me 2 years ago and I don't think it's changed: Ritalin is prescribed for two weeks, then you have to go back for more. Concerta is prescribed for two months at a time. My first appointment was quite a long consultation, but once you are 'in the system' the consultation to get a new batch of medication is really quick! You pay 50 riyals for the first appointment and then after that the consultation is free. The medication is pretty cheap too - but they don't take credit cards so remember to bring cash. I hope this all makes sense!

Thanks all for your replies! This will be my first time living overseas and there is so much to figure out? And, yes, Expat Mum, I am American.

As far as I am aware anti-depressants are fairly readily available and can be prescribed by any GP. For the ADD meds you will need to bring any documentary evidence of your diagnosis and previous scripts etc from your doctor at home. Take them to a GP here and ask for a referral to Hamad Psychiatric hospital - I think it's pretty much the only place able to dispense Methylphenidate as it is a highly controlled drug here. You can see a specialist there who will just issue you with a script for one or two months at a time. They don't hand out repeat scripts, you have to keep going back, but if you already have a firm diagnosis from home it is pretty easy to get them to dispense without too much trouble. They tend to use Concerta here. I am not sure if you can claim on your health insurance but they are not very expensive if you just pay normal prescription charges. <em>edited by DuckyLips on 09/05/2013</em>

I think lalala is referring to me :) From what I understand it is possible to get some of the meds BUT you have to go to a specific doctor through a special Hamad Hospital clinic that is housed separately from the rest of the hospital. With the brand names you are mentioning I am guessing you might be American? If so, see if your company offers a mail-order prescription benefit. For employees who are moving overseas they will sometimes grant you a full one-year fill of you prescriptions. As lalala suggested, just send a message to the "other" option via the Doha Mums contact page and I'll respond that way :)

For the ADD meds try sending an email to the Doha Mums general email address. Sounds odd for an adult but there are people with children with ADD on there who will know about the availability of the meds.I seem to remember some of the standard ADD meds weren't. Alternatively, the person I'm thinking of might come on this forum herself at some point. Anti-Ds are available but not all brands so you may have to switch.

My housemaid was taking antidepressants (prescribed by her Doc back in Sri Lanka) and was due to run out before she went home. She was on three different tablets and we managed to find two, the third not being available here. We went through a lot of hassle trying to get a prescription (I had assumed we would need one) - seeing a GP at the local HC who then issued a referral to the Psychiatry department ... we finally got the prescription, went to Khulood Pharmacy at Burger King roundabout (the pharmacists there are really helpful) to discover we could buy them over the counter!! Just had a look and found this link - hope it is of help to you both: http://www.sch.gov.qa/sch/En/scontent.jsp?smenuId=77&CSRT=3252701301396405985 Even if the meds you are looking for aren't on the list, I'd try to get in contact with HMC (or Khulood) to double check. Good luck :)

HI. I am also asking about access to particular meds in Qatar. I know that codeine is not allowed in the Middle East but I am not sure about my needed HRT or your meds. Maybe someone on here can point us in the direction of a listing of banned meds in Qatar?
