A good friend of mine in South Africa has been offered a job in Qatar. She will be negotiating her package this week and would like some help with accommodation costs, car and schooling costs and basic living expenses i.e fuel and food. Her daughter is 3 and currently attends a montessori school. I am living in Abu Dhabi and am not sure if the expenses in Qatar are the same as here.
Please would someone kindly give me an idea and I can relay the message. Thanks in advance!

I would just stress to negotiate her start up expenses like where she will live for the next couple of months and how she will get around.

HI Belinda, The question is tough to answer as there are varying scales of everything... But here is a guide... Housing : 3 bedroom Fully Furnished villas start at around Qar 11,000.00 per month and the sky is the limit in terms of what they go upto. Schools: Not sure when her daughter is 4 but most schools offer a nursery class and they go from the 3-4 age group, dependent on when their birthday is. You are looking at about Qar5,500 per term of this age group and again increasing from there. Pertol is Qar 1.00 per litre, but as the cars tend to be bigger here your consumption is much more. I use a tank a week and it cost Qar 90,00.00 to fill the car. Car prices : Good deals are to be had a certain times of year, eg Ramadan and at the beginning of the summer when there is a natrual turnover in expats there are often good second hand cars on the market. I bought a new 7 seater 4x4 for just under Qar100,000.00 less than a year ago. There are both cheaper and more expensive varieties of the same here depending on the 'brand' you buy. Food : well I can say without doubt that food prices are on the up here. I have a family of 5. 2 adults and 3 kids and we spend Qar 700.00 - 900.00 a week on food and houshold supplies. Eating out in licensed premises can be quite expensive but there are also great unlicensed restaurants around town that are well priced. Relative to SA, clothes are expensive so advise them to stock up before they come. Good luck to your friend and we look forward to welcoming them to Doha should they accept the position.
