Good afternoon all, I was hoping somebody out there may be able to offer advice about babysitting services in Doha. Im quite reluctant to try a new babysitter (it was always the grandparents before!) but hubby and I have been invited on a grown Ups night out and have thought about looking into options. I was wondering if anybody had used a babysitting service over here or knew somebody who provided this service? My children are 10 & 6 but im still unsure about getting somebody in. Does anyone have any experiences (both good or bad) or know anybody who's honest, reliable and trustworthy?

Hi Ladies, many apologies if this has been asked loads of times already but I was hoping someone may have some useful advice for whether it would be better (and obviously cheaper!!!) to buy an ipad over here in the UK before I leave, or when I get over to Qatar (which is the end of November). Also, if I buy one in the UK do I need to have it unlocked or anything to work properly in Qatar?

Hi UK-mummy - sorry to hear about your troubles and sorry I can't help but I will be in the same situation as you when I arrive so its a huge concern for me. The company has stated that I can sponsor the children but its down to the immigration department (although i've been told by the recruiter that she has never known anyone on my grade who has been refused, but perhaps she is just saying that!!!) but reading your post it doesn't seem as striaght forward as they make out. Right now i'm panicking as I can't be without my children all that time and if there's a chance they can't stay with me under the same benefits then its pointless me dragging the family over there. What a nightmare you must be going through. Have they given you a reason why? I hope somebody will find a solution for you and I will follow this post with interest but good luck and fingers crossed for you.

Once again many thanks patron this is very interesting to know. I wonder if that's part of the delay? Did you know where your colleague stayed and did he have his family with him while he had to wait for the villa? Sorry for more questions its just seems hard to get clear answers! edited by jimjam01 on 07/09/2012

Many thanks for the advice Patron its very useful. I'm at the' waiting for visa' stage having passed all crendential and police checks etc so fingers crossed its soon. I'm from the UK so hopefully there will be no issues with getting a visa and hopefully every thing will go smoothly and I can get the children over to join me ASAP. I understand that I have to come over there first which isn't great but I would rather get everything set up first and try to make the transition less of a challenge for the children. Other than little niggles i'm really excited to start the new venture and now you have provided an insight into wage structure etc I feel much better. Could I possibly ask one more thing please? were you happy with the accomodation provided? I was wondering what type of accomodation a senior grade position (111-113) may get, (I also have two children and a DH joining me). Were you pleased with the accomodation provided and is there any specifc compounds that HMC house their staff?. Sorry to pester and if you are not keen on giving too much information over the forum i'm Happy to post my email address to chat privately. Again many thanks for your help. Its extrememley appreciated. Are you from the UK also and did you make the move with children?

I know this is quite an old post but i was wondering if Motheroffive or anybody else reading this post have any update/information regarding the visa process for HMC or have any experience in waiting for the visa process in general. Motheroffive/bribyer did you make it to Qatar yet and have you settled in well and everything gone to plan and smoothly? I'm in the same boat at the minute and just waiting for the visa to arrive to set the wheels in motion for the big move!! I keep getting told it will be very soon but very soon is taking quite a while to come (or perhaps i'm just really inpatient). Is this the norm for employment in Qatar?

Hi brbiyer I'm currently in the same situation where everything is so confusing. But tbh everything I have queried as been responded to and sorted out. What I got told is that they do have pay scales but they make up the difference with 'marketing allowance' which varies depending on how much they want you over there! I was told the same info about the 21000 for each child for school fees which for us still works out better than what we get in the uk (Which is zilch) but its the actual getting a place that worries me. I guess with regards to the wage its just a matter of working out what u earn now with current outgoings etc at home compared with the offer you get and your potential earnings. Looking at other offers around the world for doing my Job I feel the offer I received is more than fair. I'm also hoping to make the move at the end of this year so I hope u get the offer you want and keep us posted on your decision. Its a big brave step for us to take.

Hi UK-mummy - I am also in the process of moving over to Qatar from the UK (just waiting for visa and to work my notice at work) and in the same situation, i.e. leaving my little babies (8 & 5) behind with hubby while I sort the Visa etc. I have had lots of useful information from some of the other ladies on the site which has helped put my mind at rest but I would really appreciate if you could share your experience or provide any tips you may come across along the way as you try to get them over here. HR have said they provide good support to get the RP and families over etc but any advice would be extremely appraciated. Is your DH going on your sponsorship or doing the whole visa run thing? Its all very exciting but nerve racking at the same time. I hope all goes smoothly for you. Good luck with the move.

Thank you all very much so far for all your comments. Its really giving me a better perspective of the whole situtaion.. MinnieM from what my future employer (which is HMC) has told me I will be in exactly the same situation as you, i.e. be over there on my own then the family will join me later when I get my RP, however, they haven't said anything about 6 months until the children can be sponsored. Im going to check with them, but if this is the case did this affcet your ability to get school places., medical care etc for the children if they aren't sponsored. I know the school situation and getting places sounds lke a bit of a task and may take some time but 6 months out of school would be a long time. You said they offered to give your husband sponsorship (which would be ideal for us as he wants to be a SAHD if possible) but you are opting to go to dubai every month and do the 'visa run', if we chose that option do you have to be out of Qatar a certain amount of time or is a case of there and straight back. Your comment has been extremley helpful and its good to know you feel safe out there (if a little bored). The first weeks over there on my own without the children is a huge obsatcle but I think it will be worth it.

I take it the obtaining a new visa each time isn't very straight forward. We are coming from the uk initially for three years then see from there and we knew he would need to keep reapplying for the visa but it doesn't seem to be cut and dry about how often or for how long he needs to leave qatar etc. I suppose the best option is for him to find work beforehand and get a sponsor.or do you know if there plenty of opportunities for sponsorship out there?he currently world as a welder so not sure of the need for them! Thank you all for your help and if u think of anything else I would appreciate any guidance. edited by jimjam01 on 07/06/2012

The employer has stated that under their terms they have different rules for male and female candidates. Whilst a male can sponsor the whole family they have stated that female employers can't sponsor their husbands. The employer is a large organisation who have said they will provide help with getting PR visa for me and the children but under current law they stated it was extremely difficult (although not impossible) for a wife to sponsor her husband. Has anyone heard of this before? Also they have requested I fly out first for medical etc then they will fly the Kids out but I have huge reservations about this and being alone female in an unfamiliar country. Its all quite daunting so would appreciate any further advice from someone who has been (or who knows someone) who may have been through it. Apart from this I'm really excited about the opportunity!
