We're going too (along with Cambodia) and popped into Borders yesterday. i was really surprised that they had nothing for SE Asia...I plan on ordering on Amazon from UK.

Can't help you with where to buy a book, we had bought ours at borders, Lonely Planet guide. But if you want to post your email address I wrote up some tips from our trip and kept it saved because friends have wanted to travel there. It's just a little write up on where we stayed, how we got around, etc. might help :)

Just bought one on Thursday from Kinokuniya Book World in Dubai Mall; they have loads of different ones. Borders don't have any in Dubai; I got them to phone all their shops last week but it may have changed by now. Forgot to add - has anyone done their visa yet and have any tips for me? UK passport. Thanks. edited by Lally on 03/06/2012

Been over New Year's Eve last year. Was great ! Tip - do NOT use the "Visa on Arrival" option and order it online. All you get is a piece of paper which says you have been registered....and then you need to queue up at the airport to get the actual visa. It took us more than 2.5 hours to wait....in a crowd of people who do not know how to spell the word queuing nevermind actually doing it.... so, if you can, obtain the visa directly from the Embassy...it;s a bit more expensive.... but well worth the investment ! Have a great trip !

There is no embassy in Dubai you would have to go to Abu Dhabi. We did visa on arrival in April and had no problems at all, we were through in about 40 minutes. We booked guides/day trips and Mekong Delta trip which was amazing through Come and Go Vietnam, they also arranged our visa on arrival. http://comeandgovietnam.com/ They also did our airport transfers which was so much easier than taxi's as they can rip you off.

I have done the visa on arrival available through the Internet the last time I visited Vietnam, entering through Hanoi. No problems and not a long wait. As I am relocating there soon I hope I have the same experience when I arrive this time!

Thank you for all the advice on finding a guide book - do like to go a bit prepared. We have a guide for the majority of the trip and have already decided on all the places we would like to visit but I just need to know more about a place before I visit. I will definitely try Dubai Mall today.

we have had the lonely planet guides on a pdf ie download from them onto your computer no need to actually buy the book. my son went on a school trip to vietnam last year, and they all got the visas done here before leaving. i wouldnt want to chance it at the border, as its just a confirmation that you can enter (just like the esta) and then you still have to queue up and get, obviously you may not have any queue, but then again you may be unlucky and there may be many planes coming in at same time.

Moose- any chance you still have that write up of tips that you can share? or anyone else has been and has something similar to share please? I think our main issue is we would like to do the north (halong bay) and the south (ho chi minh) and transport seems to be a nightmare, would it be best to get the help of a travel guide although hubby is not huge on that idea.. TIA for any tips or recommendations x

North to South. Get the train. A great experience. From Hanoi go as far South as Hue and break the journey there and then break it again on the way South although avoid Natrang. If you look at the Intrepid travel website and their trips and itineraries, they will give you some ideas of how you could travel. I did a North to South trip with them and it was excellent.

Thanks! We were for some reason told to stay away from the train, Im not big on flying so would rather take the train any day than fly :) Having a look at the website now, any other tips you can share on your experience there, anywhere to avoid particularly?

We did visa on arrival in April, no problems at all and about 1/2hr wait. We used come and go vietnam and they were fantastic. We used them for transfers and Mekong Delta overnight trip which we loved. We did the homestay option which was a gorgeous house on the river, lovely bedroom and ensuite. Only bedrooms in the house, but our family was the only one there. Be very careful with cameras and iphone in Ho chi Minh. We are very well travelled people and DH had his expensive camera stolen out of his hands down by the river by 2 guys on a motorbike. The hotel said it is a very common occurence in the city and guests loose several iphones a month as people hold them up to take a photo and the motorcyclists wizz past and steal from their hands. Just be over cautious.

Thank you TimTam, will keep that in mind- we did read that somewhere as well! :) We already got our visa from the embassy in Abu Dhabi, took a total of 15 minutes wait to get the visa stamped on our passports.

TIA for any tips or recommendations x I was there for Eid this year. You can also take buses for the shortest distance (they also have buses for longer routes but I wouldn't recommend them) and take a plane for the longest distance. We went from HCM City to Hanoi and managed to see everything and we also did a one night cruise at Ha Long Bay.

Thank you so much for your offer, I already have LP books that we have used to research the trip, was more interested in Moose's personal notes on her trip there and the do's and dont's. Thanks a lot though!
