July News

Hello ;-)

Here we are in July already, a month marked by school holidays and empty roads. My journey to work has been cut by fifteen minutes, and there’s absolutely no problem finding a parking space at the supermarket. Should we be hearing the alarm bells ringing… is the region heading into heady decline?! Of course not ! It’s the same every year, and the ease of getting around is one of the things that makes staying a viable option despite the heat. When I first moved to Dubai twelve years ago, there was a mass exodus of women and children every summer; from the day schools broke up to the week before they went back. It really has changed so much now, with so many more people staying. There are so many indoor entertainment options for the whole family that you really don’t have to go away to keep your children happy. The malls stage shows all through the summer, there’s the cinema, bowling, skiing, entertainment centres, ice-skating, indoor climbing walls…. And summer schools. Lots of them. So you don’t have to go, and really, how many families can afford eight weeks holiday over the summer?! Add to that missing Dad, and missing the comforts of your own home, and there’s little surprise that most of us stay for a lot longer.

To all the newcomers arriving… a big welcome! I am sure you will be pleasantly surprised when you get here; there is so much spin out there, it’s hard to see the true picture. The hardest thing is not knowing anyone and, the only way to deal with that is, come and meet some of us! We will be welcoming newcomers in person at ExpatWoman coffee mornings all through the summer (all through the year actually) so don’t be shy. Come along and meet other newcomers and you can discover city life together ;-)

Wherever you’re going, whatever you’re doing, have a great July.
