Residents Visa and Work Permit information

If you are planning to find work or carry out paid activities in Turkmenistan, a work authorisation is required with predetermined period of time. There are several factors the affects the process for obtaining work and residence authorisation.

You can apply for single, double, or multiple entry visas which is valid for a period up to one year. Here are the documents required:
  • Passport
  • Application form
  • Photo
  • HIV Certificate (for visas issued for a period longer than 90 days)
  • Invitation letter from host company certified by the State Migration Service of Turkmenistan


You will rarely find an accommodation that you are used to if you are from the West. There are low rise apartment buildings with locals. You may want to use agency to find the right accommodation. Please find rental prices per month below. 
  • Apartment (1 bedroom) in City Centre = $400
  • Apartment (1 bedroom) outside City Centre = $325
  • Apartment (3 bedrooms) in City Centre = starts at $680
  • Apartment (3 bedrooms) outside City Centre = $525

Driving License

Expats who are going to drive in Turkmenistan must have a valid International driving license in addition to his original driving license. If you are entering the border to Turkmenistan, a foreign registered vehicle needs to pay road tax, insurance, immigration card and fuel compensation. Driving at night outside the cities are not encouraged due to road condition. There is also zero-tolerance when it comes to drink-driving. You are also not allowed to smoke and eat while driving. It is necessary to clean your cars all the time as police officers are very strict on dirty cars. Generally, traffic in Turkmenistan is not too busy. If you plan on driving around the country, it is quite handy to get a GPS if you are going without a guide.


Hospitals in Turkmenistan do not have the capacity to treat serious or long-term medical problems. There are very few hospitals in the capital of Turkmenistan, Ashgabat. You may want to travel to nearby countries to seek better medical facilities.
