How can you be talked through the entire procedure if you're under a general or do you mean it was done under local? bit confused.

He gets my vote too-had a root canal done with him-not wisdom teeth-but given that I am usually terrified of dentists he made the whole process easy and painfree-would go back to him anytime

I've just got back from Dr. Joy's Dental Clinic in Mirdif. He said that AED 1500 would have been quoted for a complicated extraction where surgery was required.
A few of my friends also go to Dr. Joy's and they have all been highly satisfied with the cost and the standard of treatment they've received from the various specialists working there, so please don't let this thread put you off going.

I was just reading all these threads as I need to have my my bottom wisdom teeth out - causing too much pain - but not sure what exactly is wrong. The tooth is kind of stuck somehow and its even creating ear pain. I have fillings also so it's going to be a big task. I will try Dr Madhu - Thanks for the suggestions. Dunight - please let me know how you get on!

Just got round to it now, thank you BM They said between 250 to 600 (per tooth) depending on how difficult it will be - I have emailed over the X-ray for them to have a look. Feeling better already x

i am in abu dhabi a dr sheikh he has a clinic now on 13th delma st. if you go to colum boyce of british dental clinic here in abu dhabi any problem wisdoms is where he will send you, i had it done under a general in the hospital thou. but i was absolutely fine, no bruising considering he had an awful time getting them out, in a million bits in the end, i was up and out of hosp in under an hour afterwards with no pain or probs at all. i had to get all 4 wisdom teeth taken out in the uk, the guy in the hospital had an awful time getting the top ones i think it was and they were the easy ones, and as he said that they could wait, thats what i did, when they did start to hurt, some 8 years later i knew that i would have to go under a general etc.

Dunight, did you call Dr Madhu and ask how much he would charge? It is no way anything like that..........

Well it's not really surprising as it takes alot of work and effort to get these things out. The bottom ones normally require stitches as well.

I don't think the UK would be much cheaper and you'd probably have to go on a wait list, or pay for private treatment.

Wow, thanks for all the horror stories, I'm getting a bit worried now!! I think I was quoted Dhs 1,500 per tooth which is a lot more than I want to pay... but it sounds like that's the going rate?

Maybe I should wait until November when I'm in the UK? Any ideas if it will be cheaper?

*Dreading it now!!*

Yes there does seem to be a trend here with certain dentists who say "what you still have your wisdom teeth?" in horror.....the reason I got one of mine removed was because it was creating a "pocket" next to my teeth that was difficult to get to and clean and ended up getting some decay. Still have the others!

Agree gleek. I had my bottom ones taken out in my early 20's, but the nerve was running through the root. Plus I had an awful infection that was literally eating my jaw. They were unsure if they'd get away removing them without damaging the nerves to my jaw, but luckily they did.

Had the top ones removed in my early 30's so my teeth could move with braces.

I know you probably dont want to hear this but common thought in UK now is they dont remove wisdom teeth unless really absolutely neccessary because the tooth is so deep rooted etc thats its not an easy op. Id just think that unless your in total agony all the time etc etc id leave it and suck it up whilst they are playing up and enjoy the time more when their not!!

One of the reasons to do the extraction as early as possible is so that the root doesn't continue to grow close to the nerves. If you wait too long like I did, because the teeth weren't actually bothering you (I had space in my mouth because of other tooth extractions I already had)...then you could end up with nerve damage (like me).

Thanks for all your replies, I will follow up on all the recommendations! I know it's not going to be a pleasant experience but these damn teeth are pushing through and there is simply not enough room in my mouth for all of them.

I had a bottom one done at Dr Michaels and they can give you a pill so that you feel as if you are in there for 5 mins and you don't remember a thing! I had a very swollen face afterwards but not too much pain afterwards. It looked worse than it felt! Think was about 2000 dhs or so - can't remember.....

i would agree with that, mine were bottom. stubborn things put up a real good fight! thankfully looks like the top don't need removing, don't know if i could go through it all again!

dunight how much did he quote you? just had mine out with them and was quite reasonable, had it done under local in the clinic...... horrible procedure and yes there was swelling, but a week later and all is well. no pain afterwards, just keep dosed up on the painkillers. had a female dentist operate on me who was nice and explained everything, did have to stop a good few times, but to be honest it was more the thought of it than the actual procedure. don't do what i did and read all the horror stories online prior! scared myself silly!

hardly any bruising, it was the swelling which upset me but back to normal now!

fyi mine were impacted so was more expensive than a normal extraction - maybe this is why he gave you a higher price? as they will require more work? insurance covers my dental so at least i will get it back, eventually. all the best with them

I had mine taken out by Dr Louie at Dr Michael's on Al Wasl road.

The top ones are relatively easy to take out as they just pull downwards. It's the bottom ones that are normally taken out under general anaesthetic, because the roots wrap under the jaw bone, so they have to be drilled out.

I had mine taken out by a German doctor, Blue Dental Clinic on Beach Road.

Not cheap but good work and follow up.

I had an impacted wisdom tooth removed with Dr Madhu and did not even need a painkiller afterwards - he is great.

I also don't think it was more than a few hundred AED. Though it was a couple of years ago and the mists of time are a little blurry...

I agree with Claire, try to get them extracted in the dentists chair. My daughter had to have hers extracted under general because of an underlying condition and her recovery was quite long and she had loads of facial bruising. Whereas my son (and me) had ours done by the dentist - one side at a time but top and bottom and recovery time was just a few days. I had to have one extracted recently and the British dental Clinic on Al Wasl Road was really not that expensive, I can not remember how much but as far as bills go I was pleasantly surprised!

Are they proposing to take them out in hospital under a general? Can they not take them out in the chair as this would surely be less expensive and the recovery is much quicker. I have had both mine taken out in the chair and it was absolutely fine and I don't like going to the dentist (this was not here in Dubai though).

The friends of mine who had the procedure done at the dentist surgery had far less bruising and were less swollen - when you are awake they seem to be more gentle. when you are out they seem to be more rough and the bruising can be pretty awful.

Sorry you have to go through this but my experience was not so bad and it hasn't put me off going to dentists!
