'My Love is Like a Red Red Rose' (Robert Burns) - the Eddie Reader version (although Eva Cassidy's version is also beautiful). I've always loved the song, even as a child listening to the old, Scottish male singers at New Year parties.

simpleasabc - I am so very sorry for your loss. We do so often associate a sad song with loss - maybe it is cathartic - a way of letting out our sorrow and grief. Sometimes, for example at the end of a relationship, one plays the same song over and over to let the tears come and then at other times - like JoyceB we can scarcely listen to particular songs or pieces of music because the music renews the loss once more. Sending out cyber hugs and love to all those who have lost someone. xxx edited by Honey B on 21/11/2010

Loads of music sets me off, including hymn tunes, classical, arias and the beautiful Highland Cathedral which was played on the pipes as my dad's coffin was carried into church. I still can't listen to it 9 years on without getting choked up.

Hugs to you simpleasabc, I can't imagine your pain. On a smiliar note, although not the same of course, but we lost my cousin, just before his 21st birthday, in a car crash and at the time, 'Don't leave me this way' by the Communards was always on the radio and was his favourite song at that time and was played at his funeral. I still feel sad when I hear it and my dad still can't bear to hear it played, has to turn the radio off if it comes on.

I love that song, for no particular personal reason, I just find his voice absolutely beautiful and as you say, the song is really haunting!

I think I've read through this whole thread, but haven't seen Jeff Buckley's Hallelujah. Did I miss it? I think it must be one of the most beautifully haunting versions of this song ever.
LOVING this thread.

I love love love Silence by Delerium featuring Sarah McLachlan. Chills, everytime. Her vocals are amazingly haunting.
There are lots of versions but I think this might be the original, just ignore the very odd video!

I also love the club versions of it. Here's one:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oTLJjoW867g
I used to practically stop breathing when it came on in a club. I'd be the one hands in the air (or hugging my nearest friend) so overcome with emotion I'd be crying. I dance with my kids to it now and manage to keep the tears under control!
I like both male and female vocals but for raw emotion in songs Eminem is my favourite. His lyrics and voice are visceral. I think Stan is amazing:

My husband thinks it depends on the song whether it affects you rather than if it's male or female. Although he also said that Portishead's Dummy album is very haunting so maybe female wins slightly.

Hi sallymander - still fascinated with this thead and your questions. As a woman I pefer to listen to a male vocal generally though in all honesty I feel that females sing the really sad and soulful songs best. Does that make sense? When I asked hubby - he was useless - he just didn't know! That's men for you!

Thanks to everyone who contributed. Just a quick question- As women-do you prefer to listen to male vocals or female. Which do you feel touches you most deeply with sad songs? Please could you ask your DHs for a male perspective? Thanks xxx

sallymander wrote: Is it physiological-ie do certain notes hit the pleasure/pain mood receptor- like taste buds taste sweet or sour- or is it psychological? Do we interpret music subconsciously as sad/beautiful/haunting without need for lyrics to give clues or because we are conditioned to associate certain chord sequences with that mood? What came first-chicken or egg? What do you think?
Some music just affects me. Not because of the lyrics, or an associated occasion or person. Since I was a small child the Lassie theme song and Sunny - Bobby Hebb made me spontaneously cry. Nessum Dorma affects me deeply. I don't know why, it's not the lyrics, and the songs hold no special meaning or memory. Is it the chord?
Other songs make me feel like crying because I associate them with sad moments in my life. What's Going On? - 4 Non Blondes, reminds me of the beginning of the end with my first husband. These Favourite Things - Brian Ferry, a break up with a boyfriend.
And then there are song with lyrics that are just sad like The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald - Gordon Lightfoot, Seasons in the Sun - Terry Jacks, and that corny song Honey - Bobby Goldsboro. Or beautiful lyrics like, Into My Arms - Nick Cave or anything Leonard Cohen.
Mind you my technical understanding of music is very limited - perhaps these are all in the same chord
Anyhoo, HTH. I'll be interested to hear others opinions.

Patience by Guns n Roses. So different from their usual stuff (which I also love, but you could hardly call 'haunting or beautiful'!
