Hi there. OP refers to low iron so I assume she has been tested and confirmed that her condition is IRON DEFICIENCY ANAEMIA as opposed to PERNICIOUS ANAEMIA which is associated with B12 deficiency. I suffered low iron for over six years..fatigue, paleness and heart palpitations to name a few effects. My condition would not respond to iron supplements. After intensive tests it was narrowed down to two things. One is my gluten intolerance..blocks absorption of many other minerals and vitamins besides iron. Secondly is a stomach parasite H. pylori a horrid horrid creature that literally sucks iron from your intestinal walls and is associated with many other conditions including ulcers, stomach cancer etc. The more iron you consume, the more they grow since they feed on it. My doc had to ensure we had killed this parasite b4 prescribing iron. http://h-pylori-symptoms.com/resources-2/articles/helicobacter-pylori-can-cause-anaemia/ In case you are diagnosed with H. pylori, your partner must be checked too as it can be transmitted mouth to mouth. All I can advz is get to the bottom of it, ask questions, read widely and insist that doctors conducts more tests that the usual. I am grateful to have found a doctor that thinks out the box. Wish you quick recovery

Oh my god ladies! I am so sorry I have had you worried and that you have lost sleep over me I just saw this!! I have had bleeding ulcers for over 3 years now which is why I have low iron. The lowest I was before this was 5. But it has dropped again. I just got some prescription iron supplements that's all. But some of your replies have worried me even more than I already was. It is time I made an appointment ad go nag them for some answers and hopefully a solid solution. Love you all xxx thanks ever so much xxxx PS sometimes I feel I need to switch the normal human days around. 8 hours of wake time and sleep the rest, that is how fatigued and exhausted I feel all the time.

Are we talking low iron level as in clinically diagnosed as anaemic? Or just low iron but not actually anaemic? My iron levels are low, but not low enough to be classed as anaemic, I only took iron tablets during my pregnancy, apart from that I take nothing.....although maybe I should. I was also told by a doc that although my iron level is "low" compared to the "normal" range, it is "normal" for my genetic/racial make up.

Irooni, please update us - I am so hoping its a typo, 2 is extrmely serious. Having a busy day at work, but keep coming back to this thread to see if you have read our messages and clarify or take immeidate action for the patient. The worst of doctors would have admitted the patient immediately.

Iron levels of 2 .. cannot be treated by food! It needs medical intervention. Is that a typo?

this thread has been on my mind all night last night and I cant let it go.
If your doctor has not done tests to determine the cause of your low iron then you need to find another doctor! My iron hit 7 during my pregnancy and I was in hospital with an iron IV every 24 hours..... They told me that 7 was super dangerous as so low etc etc, if yours is 2 then thats just insanely low if even possible? Seek a second opinion asap. There is always an underlying cause for low iron levels and you need to find that cause. edited by Purple on 02/02/2012

I am not a medical professional, but well read about certain medical conditions.
Just two weeks ago, I discussed low iron levels with my doctor ( for someone else) and I hope that's a typo or a test error. Iron levels below 5 are considered dangerously low and as per the doctor the person can go into cardiac arrest. Its simply not possible that the doctor simply gave this person (you?) a report of 2 and didn't say its an emergency.
For extremely low iron levels, a full investigation needs to be done as there's almost always an underlying reason for iron levels at 2. The undelying reasons list is long and no point in scaring you.
Whoever this person is needs to see a doctor this very moment, if indeed their level is 2. Please google, I am sure you will find more info.
PS - to start with the patient would receive iron injections immediately (in most circumstances) edited by summerdream on 02/02/2012

I have similar ver y low iron levels and just eat a lot of iron rich food, I also take a vitamin b compound tablet daily (1 or 2 tablets depending on how i feel) - from pharmacist but no prescription necessary. This really helped make a difference too - noticed a real boost in energy levels - also helped my nails grow!!

I am always constantly low on iron. I take iron tablets with Orange juice in the morn as Vit C helps the absorption. Dont drink tea after you had your iron as the tanins in tea slow the absorption.
But if you say your iron levels are at 2, that is not normal at all and would push for more tests to be frank.
Liver and spinach i also force down my throat when i really feel fatigued but it does take a long time to build up the reserves of iron!!

my doc told me to take a tbsp each of coconut, beetroot, carrot and brown sugar, blend it up and squeeze and strain out the juice. add a couple drops of lemon juice, and have it every alternate day. haven't tried it yet though, if you do let me know if it works!
