- AppleTV is a wireless streaming media player manufactured by Apple
- DLink is a manufacturer that produces a number of devices including their own wireless streaming media player namely the Boxee Box. DLink also manufacture wireless routers.

In order to use any wireless streaming media player you will requirea PC or Mac and a wireless router in order to run your network. Your router will need to be able to reach both the location of your computer and the location of the media player (unless you have an extension set up). You can use a cabled set up if you have a cabled network in your home.

AppleTV uses iTunes on your Mac/PC to stream to your television. The AppleTV predominantly uses the mp4 format and other formats may need to be converted using a variety of software packages. The Boxee appears to use a web browser to stream video which may be more complex to use however I have never seen one so cannot advise. I do not think the Boxee will be able to play media purchased in iTunes as Apple protect their video files with DRM.

The AppleTV is very easy to set up:

Computer

Go to File->Home Sharing->Enter the details you wish to use for your home share

AppleTV:

Go to Settings->Computers->Turn On Home Sharing-> Enter the AppleID you used on your computer

I also use my AppleTV for music playlists etc. when we have parties as I have our stereo system connected into the TV.

We have vacation scheduled for Sept/Oct and would like our cute little Chihuahua "Jake" to go to a nice home as opposed to a kennel (he is very much a "people-pet" and does not do well in kennel conditions).

We would be happy to have your furry friend as our guest in our home this summer in exchange for you having our boy in your home in the fall.

Should you be interested we would be happy to hear from you.

Cheers!

Geordie expat wrote:

Elmpark wrote:
Exam systems with continuous assessment build in do offer an element of helping those who struggle with exam pressure etc. I believe there probably does need to be an element of exams and swotting for them etc, but too. often I see parents of primary aged kids pushing their kids, and then as. Feefmick has said a year 7 doing full tests on year's knowledge! Way too much too soon. Really if our generation got to Uni without this pressure why do we need to do this to our kids? I think a well rounded person, who has good social skills, conversational skills, etc as well as a decent educational background will do far better at interview than the poor soul who has been kept in being overloaded with school work!

I was one of those who left school in the '70's. Didn't go to Uni, but that was for family reasons.
Majority of my friends did and most did very well.

All we had was the 11 plus, which decided if you went to the local Grammar School or Comprehensive. Then we had O'Levels then A'Levels. None of us appear to have suffered from the lack of too many exams and tests.

I feel that we were able to be much more social and have done better in the long term as we spent more time with our friends and family and weren't stressed out about school work. Yes we studied hard, but we also played hard.

Yes all parents want their children to do well academically, but from a personal point of view and I know 'cause I went through it with one of my kids, if pushed this often works the opposite way.

Completely agree, eventually everyone has had their fill of being examined and tested.

Also I do think year 9 is ok for tests but year 7?!!! Or the pressure of year 6 SATS? I come from the Scottish system where my first tests were in my 3rd year of secondary to see how I would do with Standard Grades the following year. That was plenty and I was 14. My first lot of exams and I approached them with a fair amount of nerves. I had 8 subjects and I coped well but scored badly with chemistry, giving me a good indication that if I didn't work harder then I would do badly in the real thing...worked my socks off for a year and sorted it. I really didn't suffer from not being tested to death in primary and the early years of secondary.
