Road Accident Procedures

In the case of a road accident, do not leave the scene and call 999 immediately. The dispatcher will ask you a series of questions which he will enter on to a computer. The information you give will be relayed to a response team and this will form the basis of which team is sent to help you.
Please remain calm and answer the questions in short, specific replies, giving only the requested information. The dispatcher is likely to ask:

What is your emergency?
What's happening now?
Where is the patient located?
What number are you calling from?

At this point the dispatcher may give you directions such as "Stay on the line until I tell you to hang up. Paramedics are being sent to your location. Please meet them and direct them to the scene." If you are trained in first aid, you should apply these principles while you wait for assistance.

If no one was hurt and vehicle damage is minor, drivers are recommended to move their vehicles to the side of the road to avoid blocking traffic. Otherwise, the vehicles should NOT be moved. When the police arrive, have your vehicle registration card, driver’s license and insurance papers ready for them and follow their instructions. They will ask for your opinion of what happened, and then decide who was at fault. If the police decide you were at fault, you will be given a pink form. If the police determine you are not at fault, you will be given a green form. The form allows you to have your vehicle repaired. A garage cannot repair accident damage without a form.
