I put this response on the schools forum recently.... Your experience at GW-AK will depend on your expectations... Gems is a large and successful educational services company with consumer offerings of a range of qualities at different price points. If you think of comparison to a chocolate company it is a solid and competitive mass market one like Nestle KitKat or Cadbury Dairy Milk. If you are used to Green & Blacks you may find your consumer experience at the GWA Al Khail school lacks richness and maybe their GEMS Nations Academy would be more to your taste or competitors Foremarke or Repton among others - its a matter of taste and budget. To stretch the comparison a little more, the not-for-profits (DESS JESS, Jebel Ali etc) are the regional specialist craft producers - harder to source, appearance not as refined but ultimately fulfil the requirement very well and are cost effective.  Hope that flight of fancy is helpful!

You might try Victory Heights I believe it still has spaces and is well thought of and in easier reach of Arabian Ranches... Also Jebel Ali School new campus is close and also has a very good reputation - harder to get into the younger year groups though with waiting lists. Safa seems like a lovely school too.

The schools teach different curricula - DIA is IB and Regent is UK so your decision may be affected by the curricula that your children currently study as well as location. If you have a look at the inspection reports for each school on the KHDA website you will get a clearer picture - Regent is rated good and DIA outstanding. Regent has limited field space - 1 pitch and a side court and a smal primary play equipment area for the entire primary and secondary school along with 2 pools and a gym/sports hall. (I have heard they might transfer all of secondary to their new build Sunmarke in JVT - don't know how true that is - if it is it would free up more playspace for primary.) DIA site appears confined too though I've not toured it so cannot comment on that. Best of luck.

Only slightly relevant... I did see that GEMS Education group will be offering shares in an IPO.... they will be happy with their Inspection reports to show future shareholders. Will be interesting for customers/parents.

If you are doing a call around for places in August, include DESC Dubai English Speaking College - it has an excellent all round reputation and its a not-for-profit. It will have all places booked just now probably but people's circumstances change. I suspect the places will still be available in Repton if you postpone your decision until end August/early Sept. There are a couple of other options too - new schools with links to other schools - Kent College for example and possibly Arcadia. English College too has made some new links with a UK prep - did you try that already?

Jebel Ali Primary School (JAPS) may well have a space for your 7/8 year old as it is moving to a new location at Akoya near Arabian Ranches and Remraam. it is a not-for-profit, english national curriculum school, strong in English Maths and Science as well as Sports and Music. Teacher turnover is low which I liked and fees are reasonable. Hope that helps and good luck with your search.

Maybe the Beach with buckets and spades - that works for hours! Kite beach has a new path to bring a buggy right down near the sea! The beach at JBR is also very easy to get onto. Al Qudra Lakes to play on the sand dunes and fly kites. Lots of parks like Mushrif, Al Quoz Pond park, Barsha park and park at JLT for example. Hope that helps!

That wasn't a nice experience Silviset! When was that?. The registrar that I met at Jebel Ali was a woman not a man, and she was a cheerful lady.

I had a bad experience with that recommended water company - when they were delivering the water cooler after several missed appointments they brought the cooler and unpacking it in the kitchen when a bunch of cockroaches ran out of the packaging - I was nearly sick. The delivery man was looking at me like I was mad when I was very angry about these insects in my house and that they would lay eggs and I would have to get the fumigation done. I ended up buying a cooler in a shop instead.

I get why Jebel Ali school is so popular because of good results and gets so many students into Dubai College. I am recently come to Dubai so late with this application for my child but I hearr that if we buy a debenture for the school we can get her in if she passes the assessment and we get the debenture money back when she leaves. I think the new location will suit me too in AR.. Hopefully this might be useful information for you too. The school is good and fees are so reasonable compared to newer schools in this area so I don't mind overall about the debenture. Its like an investment. Good Luck with getting your place.

I visited this organisation Sensation Station at Ibn Battuta this week http://sensationstation.ae/what-we-do/therapy-department/speech-language-therapy/ and it was very professional and child-centred. In addition to Speech Therapy they do Occupational Therapy and MultiSensory work as well as having educational psychologists for assessments and diagnosis. They are also very transparent on their rates and prices - its on their website. Hope it works out to be what you need.

Having a look at the website this Ranches Primary school is going to use a Cambridge curriculum which is the exam board most popular in India for the British Curriculum. The website also has an English as a Second Language (EAL) section which will be a good thing as EAL is not often offered in Dubai. So I wonder, this or the Jebel Ali School which will be across the road in Akoya or continue the search....

As said above try get baby to drink or use a breast pump and do continue massage. Weird as it may sound, Savoy cabbage leaf in your bra around that breast will give you some relief also. And do try getting to a medical person or breastfeeding support person tomorrow if you cannot get the it to reduce with massage and pumping. Best of luck - its very uncomfortable.

Thanks for that! I'm glad it is a one-time payment. I must ask hubbie if his company will pay for this debenture - I had kind of assumed they wouldn't but I guess it doesn't hurt to ask. We are new at this and don't want to rock the boat.:)

All Debentures are new to me and I need help getting my head around this: If I get a place at one school it is 60,000 aed and goes up each year to 75,000 aed in year 6. If I get a place at another school that is 40,000 aed every year but I have to get a debenture that is 25,000 aed... Am I correct in thinking that the debenture is a one-time payment? And so for the first school I will pay approx 190,000 over 3 years and 500,000 to end of primary.... And for the second school I would pay 120,000 plus 25,000 = 145,000 over 3 years and 280,000+ 25,000 = 305,000 to end of primary... Aren"t I better financially with the second school even though I have to get a debenture? Reason I'm asking is I'm not sure I understand the system .....or does this debenture fee apply every year and is it really just a top up fee? I also heard something about returning debenture money - that mightn't be too bad then if it was an every year thing.... Anyone dealt with this before?
