Thanks everyone, all your posts makes me feel better. It seems like the school assessments could be a nightmare though, eek! In Sweden, where I'm from, kids don't start school until they are 7 and most can't read or write before then! They still turn out ok though... I will definitely mention that he is trilingual and I'm sure it has something to do with it bit then again I have a friend with a 14 moth old bilingual girl who is talking non stop. It's so difficult to know what's " normal" sometimes.

I really don't know as I have no previous experience with children... But if you compare him to other kids his age he seems to be lagging behind quite a bit. He can't put two words together and uses a lot of signing to get his point across but he clearly understands everything in both languages. I will probably have him assessed again once we've moved. Thanks everyone!

Thank you, I will look into those places! There's a huge waiting list here as well; 18 weeks was the latest I heard ( although it's free). He has been making a lot of progress lately and he comes from a trilingual home so I'm not too worried for him but it would be great to get some extra help.

Thanks for all your replies! I'm going to check out all three, I'm just a bit concerned if there are dogs present as well at the kennel? My cats are petrified of dogs umfortunately and the last time they were at a mixed cattery/ kennel they were very distressed... If there's one in Al Barsha that would be perfect as we will stay in Novotel Al Barsha. There are a lot of things to think about. Thanks again!

It looks like we will be put up in a hotel for about a month when we arrive in Dubai this summer and we struggle to find anywhere that will take our two cats. I don't like the thought of putting them in a cattery for that long ( they are very sociable Siamese) but if we have to: can anyone recommend a good cattery? I'm thinking somewhere with lots of space where they can be together and hopefully get lots of cuddles. Thanks!

Thanks for your replies! I looked at Raffles and I liked it but it was my understanding that they are only open until 2 pm which would not be an option... Regarding Jebel Ali at the Polo Club, I was told they are keeping the location there even though the new one in Motor City is opening as it is so popular. They are also refurbishing during the summer. These were the things that I found positive at the time. I wish I had had a chance to have a look inside EBN, it just seemed so big! The headmistress/ manger seemed lovely though and it looked very clean and organised... Thanks again!

I need to find a nursery for my 2 year old ASAP and these two looked great. We had a tour of the Polo Club one and although it looked a bit run down I loved the rural setting with horses all around etc. Emirates British Nursery on the other hand seemed to be state of the art with all the amenities, but it was huge. I was unable to get a tour though and now I'm back in the UK. Can anyone give me their opinion/ feedback about these nurseries please? I have to make up my mind by the end of May and don't be able to have second look. Thank you!

We are moving to Dubai this summer and had a look around different areas last week. I really like Arabian Ranches and found 2 nurseries I like out there but I will be looking for work in TV and that will probably be in Media City. Can someone advice me on driving time from the Ranches to Media City please? When I was out there people said it would be about 1/2 hour but my friend here who used to live the said 1 1/2 and that traffic is awful... Please help! TIA

Van anyone recommend this nursery? It didn't turn up on my search on Which School Advisor, is it very new? I'm looking at this and Jebel Ali Meadows and Lakes as well. Thanks!

Thanks for your reply! Shame about Raffles as it's so close. There's also 2 branches of Jebel Ali nursery in the area as far as I can tell? None of them sound ideal judging from your impression... How many nurseries did you see before you decided? We are going out to Dubai next week and will be looking at as many as we can,

I'm also looking for nurseries near Media City or the Springs and would like some advice. My friend sent her baby to Blossom near Media City and recommended it.

Ok it doesn't sound like an ideal situation out there... I will definitely try to do it again here but it will be extremely unlikely as there is such a long waiting time for a test ( even with cancellations) I just feel very dejected over the whole thing here and was looking for alternatives... My main worry is how to get around once I'm in Dubai as I will be on my own with my toddler all week but Careem taxi seems like a great service ( I checked out their website). It's so annoying as I had my licence in the US but let it lapse! Yes I'm Swedish ( as my username implies) :-) Thanks!

An unrelated question: is it easy to find taxis that will accommodate a child ( child seat etc.)? I will need to get around somehow... Thanks

Thanks Buddah, I know the driving is crazy in Dubai I've visited many times! I find the UK roads scary though as they are narrow and there are parked cars everywhere! At least in Dubai you have new big roads that are made for cars, not a horse and carriage right? :-) I'm not a hesitant driver by nature but I was trying to overcompensate for taking too many risks in my previous failed test. I don't mind taking a bunch of lessons in Dubai though, it will probably be helpful and I want to be as safe as possible as I have got a little boy who will be with me most of the time. I have looked at the requirements and at least lessons are dirt cheap compared to the UK! Is there anyone here who have done the test in Dubai? Also I do not have a UK passport so that could be problematic, a friend of mine had this same problem but managed to get around it somehow... Thanks!

Thanks for the advice I don't think I have time to pass here though. My instructor says there is no reason I shouldn't pass, it's my nerves only. Been driving the test routes a million times... Why is it a nightmare for your friend to get a licence? I'm willing to have a number of lessons no problem, but why would it be so much harder to pass than in the UK? Thanks!

Thank you I didn't post about this before though...? I have had plenty of practice, including 50 lessons and driving with a licence ( now expired) in the US for over 8 years. It's just the test situation that I struggle with and I was very well prepared today when I failed for undue hesitation. I will probably not have time for another test here so any advice on getting your licence in Dubai would be helpful! Thanks again!

I have just failed my 3 rd driving test here in the UK and I'm moving out to Dubai in a few months. It's really due to nerves and I feel so much pressure since we are moving but could someone tell me how hard it is to pass out there? I'm desperate to drive! TIA

Thanks for your replies guys it's been really helpful! I think JVT might be ok once the building is done and the villas look great! I have a 20 months old boy so he might be ok on the local playground for a few years. :)

Thanks Geordie expat, the villas in JVT look much nicer and more modern than most in Springs. My husband seems set on JVT but I like Springs as it seems more established and more lush and green. JVT looks a bit " barren" and a bit of a building site but maybe I'm looking at old pictures? Do you like it there? I would enjoy a pool and a playground, do you know if they are building some? Thanks!

Thank you I did read all the replies. I think we narrowed our search down so I'm mainly interested in the difference between Springs and JVT and which one is "better" if anyone has an opinion?

Thanks for the advice guys! I have been looking at properties for rent in the areas you mentioned and them all seem quite nice. Im not too keen on living on a building site though I did that two years in England... The more etablished green areas seem more to my liking. My husband will actually be working in Saudi but I'm hoping to work in Media City. I have a 20 month old toddler so anywhere with good nurseries on site is a plus.

Thanks for the replies! I'm not sure I would want to leave my child with a maid without any qualifications, doesn't seem ideal to me but I guess it's cheap... Regarding where to live: my husband will be working in Saudi Arabia in the week but I would hopefully be working in Media city so somewhere that's commutable there? We have a budget of 150.000 - 180.000 AED and would like somewhere with a pool and maybe a garden. Arabian ranches look ok but I hear traffic is really bad? Thanks!

My husband will be working in the Middle East and we have the option of living in Dubai ( the other option is KSA) and I need to know the following please: 1. Is it normal to work part time for mothers or is it difficult? 2. Nurseries seem very expensive is that right? And they seem to close for 2 months in the summer what do you do then?! 3. Are employer flexible at all with working hours and picking up from nursery etc. ( I would work in television) 4. What are good family places to live? Thank you, I hope to get some insight from some experienced expat ladies!:)
