Men or Women – How Ideal is Your Chest?
Chest reshaping is a procedure to improve the shape, symmetry and form of a chest in both males and females. It’s done for both medical and cosmetic reason. Surprisingly more for cosmetic reasons, and ones with medical issues chose to live with the deformity, resulting to low self-esteem. Because – people who chose cosmetic surgery are proven to be more independent and are keen to get more from their lives and appearance.

Female chest related issues are congenital breast developmental problems from a complete absence of one or both breasts to significantly underdeveloped breasts. Almost 80 percent of women suffer different sizes of breasts and among them about 70-80 percent are suffering from a condition called tuberous breasts. In this deformity, the breast is very narrow and hangs in form of a tube. Other chest problem, in females, include overdeveloped or hypertrophic breasts that may cause severe degenerative bony changes in the spine and shoulders. At my practice, I see many such cases, but many chose to ignore the problem and live a compromised life.

In men, there may be the absence of one-sided chest muscles and nipple called as Poland syndrome or in rare cases, both sides of the chest may be missing. Another issue with a very high incidence is men suffering from gynecomastia - a condition where men develop feminine breast glands. The prevalence gynecomastia is 60% to 90% in neonates, 50% to 60% in adolescents, and up to 70% in men aged 50 to 69 years according to a Mayo Clinic publication. Again, only few men are even aware of the problem and chose to see a doctor. Even though, Gynecomastia or male breasts corrective procedure is a safe and simple procedure. The treatment is a short procedure under local anaesthesia using ultrasonic device, a small key hole is used to remove the glands. Many men have generally large chest due to fat accumulation that is embarrassing for them and they can improve their appearance by high definition liposuction using ultrasonic or laser devices.

Specialised corrective chest clinics offer a complete evaluation of men and women chest problems. There may be blood examinations to identify hormonal problems or radiological tests like MRI may be required for a complete assessment. Based on the problem the plastic surgeon will follow international guidelines while he opts for reconstructive options.

Apart from corrective or reconstructive chest problems, a large number of women and men are approaching plastic surgeons for aesthetic chest treatment. In women, the most common being chest enhancement surgery using high- quality FDA approved silicone implants or the most modern method of fat grafting to the breasts. Asymmetrical chest problems in women require thorough analysis by plastic surgeons. Fat grafting or fat transfer is the most effective treatment in milder cases but severe cases may require complex flap surgeries or use of tissue expanders, a balloon-like device to expand the tissues of a chest.

The most desiring aesthetic procedure for men in the recent times is "Adonis sculpting". Many athletic men and gym goers are unable to define their chest in spite of long hours in the gym. They may have perfect abs, perfect arms and perfect thighs but the chest muscle does not respond to exercise. And often genetic fat deposition in some parts of chest hides the muscle definition. For them " 4D liposculpting" is ideal where the Plastic Surgeon removes the fat from around the chest muscle, using advanced technology to tighten the skin and redefine the chest muscle by transposing the fat into more favourable position.
