So you’re one of the “unlucky” ones staying in Dubai all summer? Don’t despair! There’s so much you can do that you won’t be missing the rainy weather back at home one bit! Here’s our guide of top ten things to get done over the hot, summer months…
1. Go box set crazy!

Take the time to catch up on all those shows you’ve missed while you were out and about during the cooler months. Recommended to try if you haven’t already from our forum users…
- Game Of Thrones
- The Mindy Project
- Hannibal
- True Blood
- Broadchurch
- Happy Valley
- Grimm
- Dance Moms
- Duck Dynasty
- Posh Pawn
- The White Queen
You could even go retro and start with Friends all over again- there’s 10 seasons to keep you busy and it’s still funny today!
2. Get up early!

If you can get up before sunrise the temperature is still bearable! Go for a lovely walk, sit out in your garden or on your balcony and watch the sun come up. You still need a bit of sunshine each day to keep those Vitamin D levels up, make sure you’re not hibernating completely!
3. Exercise indoors

It might time to change what exercise you do and take up some indoor options either at a lovely air conditioned gym or doing an exercise DVD in your home. Get a pedometer and count those steps to make sure you’re not being too sedentary during the summer. Mall walking is also another great option… try not to be too tempted and shop till you drop!
4. Read many books...

Make time to read some of those great novels you’ve been meaning to get round to. There’s some great summer reads out this year. Try some of the following hot new releases…
- Hard Choices- Hillary Rodham Clinton
- Mr. Mercedes- Stephen King
- Written in My Own Heart's Blood-Diana Gabaldon
- Top Secret Twenty-One- Janet Evanovich
- The Hurricane Sisters- Dorothea Benton Frank
- Diary of a Mad Diva- Joan Rivers
Or you could set yourself a challenge and get cerebral with the classics e.g. read The Complete Works Of Shakespeare, get immersed with Charles Dickens or go for it with the Bronte Sisters!
5. Get a new hobby

Have you always wanted to learn to cook, learn a new language, make jewellery, learn to sew, learn a musical instrument? Now’s the time! While away those hours accomplishing new skills! There’s tons of tutorial videos on Youtube for every possible hobby you could imagine to help you along the way. There's also lots of crafty courses held over town covering book binding, silver jewellery making, cushion making and more! Check out our Craft section for some ideas...

6. Have a spring, well, summer clean!

Take advantage of the summer slow- down and have a complete clear out! Get sorting through your messy drawer (we all have one), throw all those useless bits of papers away, clear out your closets, your kitchen cupboards, defrost the freezer… get all those jobs done that you never seem to have time for! Make sure you recycle or use the charity clothes collection points found in supermarket car parks and you’ll be doing someone else a good turn too. Get to the bottom of your stashed ironing mountain too- you know you want to!
7. Catch up on your correspondence

In the usual hustle and bustle of Dubai it can be easy to neglect friends and family. Now’s the chance to reconnect and get in touch with your loved ones. Make a big effort to email, write, Skype, call, BBM, Whatsapp all those people you might have not stayed in touch with as much as you’d like to. Send some photos too. They will really appreciate it and you’ll stop feeling guilty!
8. Plan your next holiday

If you’ve not managed to get away at this time start planning your next escape. It will make you feel better, you’ll have something to look forward to and you can do tons of interesting research to make sure your next trip away is that dream vacation you’ve been after. Sometimes even just researching a place, having a look round on google maps street view makes you feel like you've been there :)
9. Do something for charity

There are so many needy causes out there that need your support whether it’s donating your time or money and helping raising awareness. JustGiving has loads of people on who are doing great things for charity- make some anonymous donations and make someone’s day! Also check out the animal rescue shelters here in Dubai- maybe you could help them out massively and foster a cat or dog- they are overflowing at the moment. Find out more here>>
