Suze63... I too had a thumb sucker. She wanted to stop but it was all in her sleep. After many many failures we had instant success... With DUCT TAPE of all things LOL. I put it on her thumb at night, with the seam of the cushy part of the thumb, and it no longer felt good in her mouth. She was done in days.

I think each case is different and you would have to go for a consultation. Nowadays they are treating them younger than they used to, though, so 9 might not be too early.

While we're hijacking can I throw one in too?! What age do your kids start this process? DD needs them (she;s 9) but she won't stop sucking her thumb (she sucks it when she's asleep)? Is there any point while she still sucks her thumb? Any advice would be helpful (no dental cover either!).

I second what plum2 said. My dd just got her braces off and is quite happy. We got a quote from the regular Nicholas and Asp for 21000 dhs, and at the training office it was 7000 all-inclusive, braces, cleanings, x-rays, follow-ups, bands, retainers... The trainee is already a regular dentist, and is supervised by an orthodontist. Our trainee was a lady from South Africa, Dr. Roelien, and the supervisor, also the clinic director, Dr. Al-Gheriani, American-trained. Both were excellent.

Oh, and they let you pay in monthly installments of 500 dhs.

thanks for all the information. we have great insurance but NONE for orthodontists. We realize we are going to be paying a ton. but it has to be done. Was going to cost us a ton in Virigina too. Thanks.

we're also using the Nicolas & Asp school and are very pleased. DD still has her braces and they are just waiting for her bite to close properly with elastics which is a big drag for her. Hopefully coming off next month.

We used Dr. lohse at American dental clinic. Not the greatest bedside manner, but follows the same sure smile technology that our orthodontist in Virginia used, so it works for us! And yes, it was quite a bit more than what we were paying in VA :-)

Unless you have insurance which covers it, orthodontic work can be very costly. I would highly recommend the Nicholas and Asp post-graduate Orthodontic training school in Healthcare City. Excellent work supervised every step of the way by world class orthodontists and about a third of the price of anywhere else. Both my two had braces through them and have beautiful teeth now.

We are moving to Dubai this summer and I need to find an orthodontist for my 8 year old son. He needs spacers but the ortho in Virigina said to wait and do it when we move . Any good recommendations. Thanks.
