The newspaper only mentioned the holiday is announced. It doesn't say Eid has been confirmed to be on a specific date. It will be either 18th or19th of August. There is nothing confusing about it.Private sector has more freedom with regards to Eid holidays. They are only obliged to give 1 or 2 days off. So if it's on Saturday 18th, you could or could not have Sunday off, that depends on the company you work for. If Eid is declared to be on Sunday19th, then everyone will have a long holiday. Unless you work 6 days a week of course. It says the private sector will get 2 days off, so just wait and see when Eid is actually declared.

More likely that Ramadan will be 30 days because Shaban was 29 days....usually two consecutive months do not have the same number of days in Islamic calendar. So private sector resumes work on the 3rd of Shawal, Tuesday, and public on 4th day of Shawal, Wednesday.

As usual, the newspaper is as clear as mud.

Yes, really wonder why they could not explain it better, we have to look at conversion calendars and work out what day the 1st of Shawal might fall on when they could have done that for us by saying either Saturday or Sunday, anyway I thought it could go either way 29 or 30 days, like 50/50 chance?

Looking back at the calendar on earlier months I see 'Muharram & Safar' were two consecutive 29 days months this (Islamic) year.

Or can this not happen twice within a year perhaps?

From my limited understanding of the Islamic calendar, usually two months do not have the same number of days although there are exceptions - it is just less common...most online sources state the 1st of Shawwal as being Sunday the 19th...therefore the last day of fasting is on Saturday.

The newspapers would have been better off printing nothing so as not to confuse people unless they can give concrete dates. They do this for every public holiday, it's so unnecessary.

Sorry I was mistaken about the consecutive months being 'Muharram & Safar' they were not both 29 days, but it can happen as you say but most likely not.

Yes that makes perfect sense Di, I was assuming that Ramadan is 29 days.

So this means public sector has been declared as definitely from Friday 17th evening, but private sector holiday begins from 1st day of the new month at the end of Ramadan, so its going to depend if Ramadan ends Friday at 29 days long or ends Saturday at 30 days, making the private sector holiday as possibly starting Saturday or Sunday.

We will not know for sure until they announce the end of Ramadan I guess.

If I have understood it correctly.

It sounds like (happy to be corrected by someone far more knowledgable ) - that Eid is going to start on Friday sunset and that the private sector would get Sat & Sun off being the 1st and 2nd days.

JMO. Someone tell us
