Like hello kitty said, full fat milk until two years of age is recommended. I believe i read that its necessary for the development of the child's brain. then after that skim/low fat should be fine. your pediatrician would be best to advise you, though. Yes, but there's a subtle phrasing of "semi/skimmed milk should be fine" that implies that if you need to switch, then you can, but there is no medical need for an average child to be having a low-fat diet, quite the opposite, in fact.

In the UK I'm sure that the recommended age to switch from full to low fat was 5 years.

It's advised to give full-fat up until the age of two at the least. They need the extra calories and fat (some fat is good!). My two will be drinking full-fat for as long as they live with me, because that's what we all drink at home.

Got to say that we switched when DD was almost 2 but was as much to do with convenience of not stocking both types rather than pure health reasons. I was happy that she was getting a balanced diet and we kinda switched gradually i.e. I forgot to get full fat milk one day so she ended up having low fat till I went to the shops again - no harm done and eventually we just left it as low fat for everyone :) Is a personal choice I reckon unless advised specifically by your Doc/Paed.

I switched to low fat milk when DD was 2. Read some article about effects of giving full fat milk not good for DD in later in life. Paediatrician said 2 was the right age to change as she would get fats from other sources of her diet. It is very much a personal choice. Both my sister's and brother's kids all have full fat milk and they are a few or more years older than my DD.

I think it depends on how much they drink. But most kids on a fairly healthy diet aren't in danger of not getting enough fat. Ask your ped. what they think is best for YOUR son. We switched to low fat milk simply because I got tired of having to stock both, no ill effects. edited by Faifunghi on 16/01/2011

when my DD turned 2 I started giving her low-fat milk and she is fine with it. She drinks a lot of it so I'm not concerned that she is getting too much fat.

I have been giving my DD full-cream milk but plan to switch to low-fat milk (organic if possible) when she's older as advised by her paediatrician. She is three now.
