My OH wants to cycle from Dubai Marina to Emaar Square (in front of Dubai Mall) and wondered if there were any other cyclists who would do this route?

I think he is thinking of Al Wasl Road or Jumeirah Road.

If there are any others... let me know!

I cycle to work (Springs to JLT) but only during the cooler months. In terms of safety I've never had an issue with my route and ride on the road not path, which could be down to a few reasons. Yes, I know some people might say it only takes one idiot but the same principle applies when you're driving a car and just because you're in a tin shell it doesn't necessarily mean it's going to save your life. The same principle applies to all parts of your daily life. Custard Apple is exactly right in the sense of drivers not having awareness for cyclist but I do feel many people have a 2+2 = 5 mentality when it comes to drivers here. Yes it can be bad but it's not as bad as everyone makes out to be. Try roads in large cities in Africa and India etc. I know people on here might think I'm crazy and they wouldn't dream of risking their life in such a way but we're not all the same hence productive conversations on forums or sometimes arguments. I feel as long as he's aware of the risks - takes the best precautions he can - go out and do it. Enjoy the open road and if something is going to happen....it's gonna happen no matter what you do. From an experienced Dubai/London motorcyclist/cyclist/car driver who values their life but makes sure she enjoys it at the same time. Hope he gets to work okay whatever he decides.

I cycle from my pace to my bootcamp, so that is from marina to jumeirah beach near burj al arab thrice a week at 5:15am. But the road is less crazy at that time of the hour and and im off to bootcamps anyway so i dont care if i look like sh!t. i wouldn't do it though even at 6.30am because it would be a bit hot then, plus i dont wanna go to owrk looking all messed up. And not to mention the crazy drivers.

I have a friend who did a similar journey in reverse, cycling every day. Been doing the same thing for about 6 years I think. But i dont think I'd like my DH to do it! edited by Lady Bubbles on 02/08/2011

I would be checking his insurance policy... In all seriousness it is not a good idea any time of year.

well he would leave at 6.30 am.. he's training for a triathlon. Also used to the crazy roads of central london so he thinks its ok.... I on the other hand.... I cycle in London, too, but I wouldn't do it in Dubai. In London, motorists can be careless, but at least they know there [i'>are[/i'> cyclists using the same roads - in Dubai the idea of watching out for cyclists when turning or changing lanes simply wouldn't occur to lots of drivers. There's also a disturbing correlation between cycling and 'poor people who don't count'. I genuinely think it would be very dangerous, even if he is an experienced city cyclist. edited by Custard Apple on 02/08/2011

In this heat? And cycling is really taking your life in your hands here. I really wouldn't recommend it.
