Just wanted a rough estimate of the cost of shipping our belongings to Canada ? Also if anyone has already relocated there what where your initial costs etc apart from rent ? Any info regarding Toronto would be greatly appreciated.

We're in the process of working out who we're using to ship to Toronto. Got quotes from Crown, Allied Pickfords, Santa Fe, Move One and DASA. The costs range from AED 25,000-36,000. All except one actually fell between 25-28. We're thinking of going with Move One who in addition to being one of the 2 most reasonable has shown a great deal of professionalism and responsiveness so far, as well as seems to have everything systemised. So they're quite quick. A friend of ours had her stuff shipped with them (through work) and was happy as well. Our next choice based on interaction so far is Santa Fe. Good luck.

This time around we used Tippet Richardson and we had a terrible experience - I would not recommend them. Last time we used Crown Relocation and they were wonderful. Everything arrived as is, nothing broken or damaged, good customer service. The problem with them this time was they prefer not to do loose boxes. They will if you want them to but it will take time for you to get your items. I would look around. The partner company of Tippet here is AGS Movers and they were very good. Perhaps, you can start with them and see what they recommend. I can't remember exactly what was charged per cubic meter but I can tell you that we didn't bring that much (3 seater couch, desk, lounge chair, two chairs, dresser, a couple of lamps (one of which was damaged on arrival), pictures (a few frames broken on arrival) and then misc. decor items (rugs, paintings, etc.) which were mostly sentimental but iimportant to us and it cost a whopping $6K+ CAD. If I did it all over again, I wouldn't have brought any furniture with me and looked for alternative ways to get odds and ends over here. Shipping in and out of TO is often cheaper because of the sheer volume from there. You can often get a part shipment in with someone else's stuff thereby reducing the cost. We tried to do that but our timing didnt coincide with anyone elses. edited by aprilmama on 21/05/2012

Aprilmama, what shipping company did you use? My DH and I are starting to look for quotes as we'll be sending some of our things to Red Deer this summer. Was that 6,000 CAD that it cost you and for how much of a container, how many cubic meters if you remember?

Cheapest shipping rates we got were 12k to Dubai from about 2 hours outside of TO. We decided to just get rid of most of our stuff and get new stuff here.

We just shipped our stuff here from Canada and a 20ft container would have cost around 18,000 CAD. We came from Calgary though so probably a little bit more expensive than Toronto. We decided not to ship a whole container full and it still cost us over 6,000 to get some of our stuff here. A few years ago when we sent our stuff from Dubai to Calgary, the cost was approx. the same - about 18K. edited by aprilmama on 20/05/2012
