So have just cancelled the visa for the maid. Took her on after the previous sponsor highly recommended her. But it turned out to be the other way. After consulting this previous sponsor by telephone it turned out she was not so nice. Can we make it an issue on this forum to be honest about our maids? Can we please just tell the maid we can not recommend them and that they have to find jobs themselves instead of highly praising them just to get rid of them for ourselves?
This little joke has costed me an arm and a leg. Sorry if it sounds harsh but I cancelled her visa cause she could not be trusted in the house and therefore not be recommended.

It is not worth the discussion anymore but am so disappointed of being called desperate. Nobody called you desperate? There was a post about a maid being desperate - had you mis-read that?? Lol. I am desperate and not afraid to say it.

I'd be hesitant to sponsor a maid through a recommendation on this forum. I would think that if someone had a good maid and they were leaving Dubai, that they'd have many friends who would be interested in taking over sponsorship and would not need to put out a classified ad to get any stranger to take their maid.

again back to honesty. It was indeed what her previous sponsor had not told. When phoning him and asking did the changing of phone numbers also happen do this fduring his 1 year period etc. He said yes she also changed it a couple of times. Had people at the door asking for the money back she borrowed etc. This maid behaved badly. My designer handback is missing and god know what else. I do know a couple of things but so not wish to put it on here. Anyway I cancelled her visa to spare other people the agony of having her in her house. And I am not a desperate house wife. I have problems with people people not telling the truth when it comes to safety of your family by letting some one in like that. It is not worth the discussion anymore but am so disappointed of being called desperate.

I find it annoying. As far as I'm concerned the maids section is for exchanging advice (and juicy stories ;)) Sorry, just my opinion. I agree with you. It is not a classifieds board. Then don't ask where to find *anything* on the forum. You can narrow the focus on the forum right down to the point where there is nothing to talk about. And then it gets [b'>boring[/b'> and people find other outlets. And it doesn't hurt you in the slightest to skip passed a request for a maid. What's boring is scrolling through endless threads asking where to find this maid or that because the poster is too cheap or idle to post messages in the correct places !! It's a discussion forum not classifieds...

moral issues That leads us back to the original post? :D maybe she mean the maid's morals wrt DH/DS, not madam's morals wrt dumping the maid on some poor unsuspecting desperate housewife :D

And then it gets boring and people find other outlets. It's already slowed down markedly from what it was a year or two ago. And it doesn't hurt you in the slightest to skip passed a request for a maid. Even the mods have repeatedly posted that the maids section is NOT meant as a classifieds for finding a maid. Read the forum rules!! Yes, that is true. It is against the forum rules.

As far as I'm concerned this forum is not about finding maids, unless you mean the classifieds section. It bothers me to see so many adds on the maids forum, it's not meant for that. On the other hand, if we are talking about the classifieds, I fully agree: let's give accurate recommendations in order to spare other EW's our own agonies. However, same as in "real life" and "real companies": many are willing to tell a white lie if they want to get rid of an employee. edited by Oopsiedaisy on 28/05/2012 Why does it bother you so much that people are looking for maids on the maids forum? The classifieds only come out once a day. It's not like there is a finite about of space on the forum ... and people ask for other things they are looking for so why not a maid?

I think the thing to remember about references is not 'what you say' it's what 'you DON'T say'. I too, got a glowing reference for our helper but, in hindsight, the things which irritate me about her work were not covered in the reference. I wonder if the reason her ex-employer gave for laying her off after 1 year, really was the truth. edited by mum2girls on 28/05/2012

hummus - You do realise that even though you've cancelled her visa, she is still your responsibility until either she finds another sponsor or leaves the country don't you? Otherwise, you are liable for her visa overstay charges per day after the 30 (?) day grace is over.

I totally agree with you, but it is not an easy thing to do and at much costs and risk to the employer ......so I can see why people take the easy/cheap option against doing the right thing.......Imagine a maid is living with you, have access to your children and household things, and thinks that you will only give an honest reference to her prospective employers......as she gets more and more desparate to find her next job, she thinks you are the sole reason why she is not getting the plum AED2.5k job she thinks she is entitled to which there are plenty of floating around out there for easy grabbing...you just don't know what desparate people are capable of, especially when they live with you....I ended up having the costs, stress and trauma of sending a maid back to the philippines last year...with the help of fellow EW friends physically making her go to the airport and making sure I get an exit stamp on the papers. You're right, it's not right, but you can see the sense in why people do it. edited by Sugarbeach on 28/05/2012
