I feel a bit miffed cos I always liked him and I give him food and water every day along with cold water and a towel to cool himself down
So sorry to say this, but you gave him more than an inch. A towel? Daily meals?
no wonder.
Wow! Giving someone some basics to cool off in this cruel heat and a meal, he cannot afford is a lot?? It's really nothing. I do that everyday too, plus an area to rest. It's about doing what you can, to make a little difference in someone's life.
Unfortunately it's always difficult to know if it's a technique to impose expenditure on you or if he genuinely meant well for your garden. I want to make the assumption that people are good so I, personally would pay on this occasion because if you don't, he will most probably have to pay out of his own pocket. the companies those guys work for are notoriously hard on them and AED300 is a massive amount for him. However, just make sure you get the message across that he needs to ask permission in the future.
As for the sand, it is normal procedure and it will help your grass. That sand is full of nutrient that the grass really lacks. it may take a while to sink though, and you shouldn't really walk too much on it initially to let it sink naturally.
But you are hiring him properly/legally right? through a company and not just a man from round the corner? ;)
In which case you can take it up with the company if required and have your next monthly payment reduced or whatever.
No way would I give him 300aed. 100aed is enough and warn him if he pulls a stunt like that again, you will not pay him.
He shouldn't do this. Be firm otherwise he will do this again.
Thanks for the replies, ladies. I guess I will pay this time as I would hate for him to be out of pocket. I will have to try and explain that he needs to ask first next time. I look forward to padding around on my lush grass carpet in a month or two!

no still wouldn't pay. how do you know it isn't sand dug up from the beach?
it's different, you can tell that straight away, it's very orange/reddish in colour and much denser than beach sand. Ours brought it in a truck and dumped it in the driveway. They normally put a covering over the entire garden of at least a couple of cm's think.
Our gardener puts sand and fertiliser on the grass every year and it does make a huge difference but they always get the ok before applying it. I know we've been charged about 500dh so 300dh seems fair enough. If there's a lot of sand they would have had to bring it in a truck. He was probably trying to do the right thing so I'd pay him this time but tell him he needs to get the ok from you first in future.
I've had this, my gardener planted a load of flowers without asking me - pointless exercise as the dog will immediately destroy them - then he had the nerve to ask me for 250Dhs for something I know wouldn't have cost more than 20 dhs. I flat out told him NO.
With regards to the sand on the grass, yes we have had this, but only after we asked for it. It does make a big difference, it seems to be a mixture of sand, grass seed, fertilizer etc. Upto you whether or not you pay, given that you didn't ask for it.
I would give him the benefit of the doubt on the basis this will be a huge amount of money for him to cover himself then ensure he did understand that going forward he should not spend money without asking you. My assumption would also be that he know more about gardening than I did so I'd accept the advice.
So, I got home from the school run yesterday afternoon and found the gardner had deposited reddish coloured sand all over our grass (which I thought was actually doing OK). Today he comes early, to catch me, and tells me that we owe him 300dhs for the "special sand, grass coming, insha Allah". I told him the grass was fine and he needs to ask me first before he goes spending money on things I haven't asked him to do. English is not his strong suit so I'm pretty sure none of that went in. Has anyone had their gardner put sand on their grass - what is the purpose and will my grass be "like a carpet" or is he having a laugh? I feel a bit miffed cos I always liked him and I give him food and water every day along with cold water and a towel to cool himself down so I'm a bit annoyed that he's gone and done something I didn't ask him to do. Would you pay the 300dhs?
