Hi ladies, our Cairo move is happening and we'll be leaving UAE mid April

Unfortunately it's not practical to take any of our furniture with us due to the severe import taxes in Cairo and we've sold the car already.

Question is how to get rid of a house full of furniture whilst still living in it? I had mentioned to DH we'd prob need to spend a few nights in a hotel before going, he looked at me in horror, but I can't see how else it could be done?

Any insights from ladies who've done a big move much appreciated xx

Oh also, with regard to small items, pots, glasses towels etc, what to do with them?? Seems a shame to bin them since there are always so many in need of bits and pieces, in AD I'd just carefully pack them and leave them by a street dumpster, but in Dubai there doesn't seem to be anywhere around like that.

Google Helping Hands UAE, email them with a list of what you have they are pretty quick to get back. They either donate items to people who need (e,g, people affected by fires etc) or sell and use the money in labour camps etc... I also used Take My Junk and they even took cups, glasses etc... but I did sort them into 'sets' as we had a lot of odds and ends. The security guys in my building took the rest for their lunch room, since we had a lot of odd cutlery etc but they didn't care about the looks, just the function

Friends of mine moved to Doha, Qatar - everything was shipped before they went and they stayed in a hotel for a few nights, as a treat and goodbye to Dubai - they loved it! Also like Nyranee it is an opportunity to get your deposits back, DEWA / Etisalat etc ..

You very likely will have to live somewhere the last days as things like DEWA disconnection and getting deposit back might need a few days as well. As for the bigger items call take my junk UAE (just googel them) they can help you with this if you dont find buyers. And if you have a maid just ask her if she wants some smaller items and give the rest to charity. Or maybe do a garage sale ?

A few weeks ago there was a newspaper article for one of the special needs schools charity shops that needed donations of things to sell. I think it was Dubai school for special needs. I'm sure any of theses schools would happily take your donations to sell. Or if you live near AR, the ranches ladies hold monthly garage sales to support orphans in Ajman. They would probably take your donations too. Good luck with your move.

List large items on Dubizzle. Small items you can sell at Safa Flea market.
