Being in a Muslim country one would think one is safe (we are also Muslim) .....my brother bought a foot thingy (dont ask what its actually is as it is in Japanese) from Daiso - the Japanese store with lots of gadget-y things. When we got home we saw that the material to manufacture the item was *** SKIN! ....for most expats that is not a big deal but for us a BIG issue......so now we have been ripped out of our comfort zone of being able to walk into a store here and buy items without prejudice.....

I'm sorry, but I think this is "much ado about nothing." Thanks for pointing out what you have found. We've been warned. Let it be.

I think the problem is that the OP was unaware...it's obvious what you put in decanters or glasses and yes some supermarkets sell p0rk products under strict regulations in separate rooms that have notices saying Non-Muslims only or whatever...not much chance of a Muslim wandering in and buying something by mistake.

Two points to make here: Firstly, as with so many things in Islam, there is a difference of opinion among the key scholars when it comes to animal hides. Imam Maalik and Imam Abu Hanifah both say that the hadith regarding the purification of the skin when tanned is general without any exception; thus the tanned skin of even the swine or dog would be considered pure. Imam Hanbal and Imam Shafei disagree, but it's up to individual Muslims as to which opinion they choose to accept. edited by Madge_Gustard on 25/03/2013 But when it comes to anything containing ***, I would at least want to know it's there and then decide if I want to use it or not.

The only thing that is flat-out forbidden in Islam is the human consumption of pork products. The use of parts of the pïg is an entirely separate issue, and many Islamic scholars believe that the non-food use of parts of the pïg after death, as long as they have been properly cleaned of blood, is completely acceptable. There are many sources of research on this issue, but you might as well start here: [url=http://www.onislam.net/english/ask-the-scholar/acts-of-worship/concept-of-worship/169963-using-a-brush-made-of-boar-bristles.html'>Using A Brush Made of Boar Bristles[/url'> <em>edited by Madge_Gustard on 25/03/2013</em>

Best thing is just to report it to the DED, and they will take care of it. You have the right intention not to use anything that has *** in it. And it happens, even with strict control, somethings fall through.

I read a blog post about this an year ago... a person found a toothbrush made out of *** hair...So it really is something that you should complain about...most of the labeling is done in Japanese and most of us do not bother to read labels since we assume everything here is halal unless explicitly labeled otherwise. here is the link to the blog post i am taking about http://diatodxb.blogspot.ae/2010/05/***-bristled-toothbrush.html ETA: ok the link does not seem to be working since "p i g" gets censored out but if someone wants to read the blog post ..just scroll down to May 2010 posts...ul find it there... <em>edited by lilypad28 on 25/03/2013</em>

Really Gorobattie? I thought I remembered clerics in Saudi had said p!g valves for heart surgery were acceptable? I did a quick search and could only come up with an Egyptian cleric's statement (http://www.islamopediaonline.org/fatwa/ali-gomaa-no-obstacle-use-heart-valve-taken-***-medical-treatments) but I don't know about the accuracy or reliability of the site or the information. Perhaps it is something like other faiths? Some sects accept blood transfusions for example where others don't allow them. I'm not trying to stir the pot, but I do like to be educated so I don't make any future mistakes. My questions are sincere, as I do want to understand. ETA, I do understand why the OP is upset, she has a legitimate complaint as the product was not clearly labelled. edited by marycatherine on 25/03/2013 regarding organs transplant: I have no idea of that fatwa to be honest, I would really to get it myself, thanks for sharing the link. In a fairly way, I always get myself out of the p!g products as much as I can. ETA: now you had opened my eyes for something new and I never come across....I did some googling about that matter, and discovered that there is so many opinions about using skin, some are saying it's okay as p!gs have the same as dogs, lions and donkeys while alive, and then after the death of the animal, some clerics think it's okay to use the skin, some are just saying p!gs are just a no - no.... by the end....there is a very important islamic rule: al darorat tobeeh al mahthorat, means: for very important matters islam allows breaking the no - no of islam....as an example: a strange man see a woman body: a gyne can do this is some examinations... for me: using p1g valves to save a human life is the most important.... I am not stirring a pot either, I am just learning something new, and it was something I lived all my life not knowing it. :) thanks MaryCatherine :) edited by Gorobattie on 25/03/2013 <em>edited by Gorobattie on 25/03/2013</em>

Most shoes in shops like aldo, newlook ... are made of *** skin. Far east asian muslims I met while studying in the UK know how to recognise such shoes. You can google it and check how it looks as most labels would not mention it.

Janatks, Oh i would be really upset too because I have lived here for so long that I take these things for granted that things like this will not be allowed on the shelves without prior warning. But I guess we all just have to be really cautious now regarding what we buy. Do let us know what was the outcome of your complaint at DED.

I think that there are haram things all around us here as there are everywhere - we have have to be constantly vigilant and protect ourselves and our families from these harmful things. I am surprised that this device was not labeled as containing this haram ingredient. This is just another example of how careful we must continue to be. Don't be upset. I am sure it was an oversight or even perhaps innocent ignorance of what is haram as Derien showed in her reply, on the part of Daiso rather than a deliberate insult to our religion. As I muslim, I am constantly pointing out haram things to my children using them as teaching tools rather than panicking at the sight of them.

As a muslim, I think you're overreacting. Look around you, the world, including UAE, is filled with unislamic things. You didn't intend to buy something haram, so there is no sin on your part. You learn from this, possibly file a complaint with DED, and next time just be a bit more cautious about your purchases since it is something you feel so strongly about. Totally agree.

Why would you be upset? You wont be digesting it! A *** is Najsul-Ayn (completely impure). It is not permissible to use any product of a *** as well as any product manufactured from it. Well you do know that many products imported from Europe and elsewhere contain *** fat and pork derivatives, right? This includes many foods sold here where it is not mentioned in the ingredients and cosmetics Toothpaste, capsules for medication the list is huge. I remember it was a question on QI

Call Daiso management and if that doesn't work (which it probably won't) then call DED. Looks as though Daiso needs a non Muslim section. Sorry you're so upset as much as this is a Muslim country clearly Dubai has sold out and made it so western you literally could be in any country with heat and a beach. I much prefer old Dubai and several of the other quieter respectable emirates.

Sorry you're so upset. You won't be injecting it, so wash your hands and move on. It is okay to touch a ***, you know even as a Muslim. It is also the fact that I feel like I have been ripped out of my comfort zone because this is a muslim country and I thought I would not have to be on my guard as I would in other countries. One of the reasons I am also living here compared to say the US or UK, or in my case Germany.

Sorry you're so upset. You won't be injesting it, so wash your hands and move on. I would be shocked if one truly believes they've never come into contact with a derivative of **** ever...I know you're upset but it wasn't intentional and next time read the label before bringing it home. <em>edited by xmasbaby on 25/03/2013</em>

So sorry to hear that! I wouldn't mind it myself but I understand why you would be upset. I love Daiso though! I suggest maybe finding the contact for Daiso's management here in UAE and send them an email first.
