My maid is required to work weekends. In fact, those are her busiest days. Sunday is the massive cleaning day. Mondays are delivery days. Thursday are groceries. Does your maid get any days off?

Sorry, there is no such rule as giving the maid the friday off. I worked for a decade in companies that never gave me weekends off despite the fact that all others had their weekend off. My maid does not get every friday off. And she is very happy with that. She actually told me that she rather has less friday's off as she spends too much money when hanging out with the other maids.(they go to malls etc) She also meets some maids after her work in the evenings for a little while and she is ok with that. If she really wants to go to Church and happens to work that day, we arrange some time off or we agree for her to go next week. It is all a matter of compromise. But you are the Employer and she should have followed your rules. In our case, we set those rules before we hired her! This saved us some trouble.

I'm not surprised she wanted to leave. OP regarding her day off you say 'When I finally gave it to her' - so how long did she have to wait for a day off????? Friday is the usual day to give as a day off - they get to meet up with their friends/family and go to church together. As others have said - she would feel lonely and isolated if she had a day off different to her friends. If we had something on and needed our housemaid on a Friday I would give her plenty of notice and often her cousin would come to our villa so they could still spend time together. If she worked part of a Friday (very rare) I would either pay her extra or give her extra time off. As it was a rare occurance she often chose the more money route. In my house/family there's only two people who have Fridays off and thats my daughters who work in a school. Everyone else because of the nature of their job works a Friday if the have to, and they have to. That includes sons, sons in law, daughter in law, who are all in the airline industry, my medical student son in law, carers, maids, and my right hand man. Its part of their job and whilst efforts are made to ensure anyone who works in my house has one definite Friday off per month ....if it cant be done then it doesnt happen and they have another day instead. No one seems isolated and its quite simply life and the job they are doing. However I really do believe its something that should be made up for in other ways even if its just by way of appreciating the person and the job they are doing - at the very least. Times change and we're long past the days of life coming to a halt just because its a certain day of the week. edited by DesertRose1958 on 20/04/2013 I assume tho that their friendship groups would also have the same erratic scheduling. Whereas most maids do get Fridays off - creating a potentially isolating scenario if she gets a different day off. Also, we have to remember that maids here are not surrounded by family which is different to your situation. That in itself can cause isolation. Yes they do have the same erratic scheduling and its why the hardly ever see each other. As a family we see a each other but we hardly ever see each other 'altogether' unless its planned well in advance and specific days off work are requested or taken as leave. Maids and other employees in my house (including the european expats and adult locals) - they are all well looked after, appreciated and considered. They arent isolated but even if they were it would very much be a case of ....Im sorry but you cant have Fridays off just because its a Friday and all your friends are off. I would try and find ways to help them because loneliness is awful but I wouldnt change anything. They would then have to decide if the job was for them or not. There aren't any Cinderellas in this house and I think thats what helps when it comes to being able to say No.

Times change and we're long past the days of life coming to a halt just because its a certain day of the week. edited by DesertRose1958 on 20/04/2013 Not related to your situation but I find it really sad that in my home country the traditional 'quiet' day (Sunday) is just another day of the week with shops open etc. My brother lives in Switzerland where Sundays truly are a day off, shops shut etc. You aren't even allowed to do noisy things like mow the lawn etc. It's fabulous, everyone gets to spend time relaxing with their families an/or friends. Obv certain professions still need to work, medical etc but only if it's a necessity. I was thinking about the grass cutting ban on a sunday - Swiss men must be the happiest on earth :D Personally I do wish things would stand still for a while at times but really its just not the world we live in today.

Some things were minor but others not. Her hair was long and I'd find it in our food or my youngest sons purees. That aggravated me to no end since I tie my hair when entering the kitchen, so I'd expect her to do the same, she kept avoiding the hair net. On the phone she asked if she'd have a day off, I said yes but not weekend because that's the only time I have to see my family. Upon arrival even before I had her residency she kept asking for her day off. When I finally gave it to her I said she can pick a weekday and leave early morning and be back by afternoon. She insisted she wants weekend. I bent over backwards to give her the Saturday from 8 am till 6 pm. She said she wants more, so I said 8 pm she said no, she wants 24 hrs, and if not then she wants to leave! I said that she's to allowed to spend the night out and that it's also for here safety. After that things just net bad, she'd lock her bedroom door when going out ( the iron is in her room) she had said that we don't give her enough food! Anyway, i think she thought I'm desperate and won't dare cancel herr visa, SOS when I did she was apologizing and regretting it. Sometimes they don't understand what we say and I don't units and her when she speaks and that can cause major issues! Good luck with yours, what's happening there? That's disgusting about the hair... I have told ours to wash her hands with soap before handling food. She doesn't. Last week, she was ripping the stems off of the spinach for our salad (I never told her to do this- I actually hate her handling every single piece of spinach!!), and touching her mouth and face. I told her to please wash her hands because she's touching our food. She rinsed with water, so I said to do it with soap! She looked lost. It's really so much to mention and alot of people like to jump in and judge on this forum without knowing the full details... Good luck to you though! :-) Based on this post you'd never eat in my house - and I do the cooking. In fact I think I'd defy anyone not to have a fiddle with bits of themself whilst doing other things. edited by DesertRose1958 on 20/04/2013

Have you ever thought that most maids get Friday off. So by you giving her a "day" off during the week, she may feel isolated as all her friends work? Also, IMHO you are being unreasonable by "allowing" her only 10 hours off. Really don't understand. Back home most people cope with kids, jobs etc without a maid 365 days a year. Why do you feel you can't cope on a Friday? I could have written this. By the way, why do most EW tend to think that fellow posters are good employers? Personally I think many are just as bad as the ones they are so happy to judge.

I don't agree with this last post: according to the OP, she made it clear during the phone interview, before the maid came to Dubaï: no off day during week-ends. If the maid did not agree with that, she should have say it before coming to Dubaï or refuse the job. If you take a job in a restaurant you cannot refuse to work at lunchtime because your friends are free at that time. Same here. Elabella, I am sure you were a good employer, I hope it will be fine with your next helper .

Good luck to you though! :-) Tara.k, I know you don't like to be judged so please don't take this as judgement, it's trying to be helpful advice.... Have you considered that your maid 'looked lost' because she grew up with different standards of hygiene to you and she genuinely doesn't understand the need for soap? That she was trying to be helpful by removing the stems from your spinach and she can't understand why you are angry with her, yet again? I think I'd look pretty lost if I was raising the ire of my employer with every little thing I did or sound I made and I didn't understand why. Have you sat her down and gone through expected hygiene and expected behaviour (no crinkling bags when baby asleep for instance)? Written her lists exactly how you would like things done? Maybe her problem is lack of job training rather than she's trying to annoy you on purpose? Or maybe you are a great employer and have provided ample training and she just doesn't want to, or can't, get it. Like I said, I'm not judging. edited by Daza on 19/04/2013

Also a day off to leave the house is also not part of the contract. Does your employer specify that you can go home after work or take your lunch break away from the office? Do you expect the maid to sit in her room by herself on her 'off' hours?

As far as I know, they are not allowed to be sleeping outside the employers home. As an employer, you provide accommodation and they should be sleeping there, not outside. Also a day off to leave the house is also not part of the contract. Neither is a phone. So from what I can tell, you did more than what you are legally bound to do. But for her to resist your house rules (hair net!) when legally, she should, is where the problem is.

Sorry but that sounds a little unfair. You only give her Saturday from 8-6? So she can leave at 8am and I guess it takes her a good hour by public trasport to go meet her friends. Then she has to leave by 5pm to be back by 6pm? Why can't you let her leave on Thursday night around 6pm and be back on Friday around 9pm? Unless of course you need her to babysit in which case you let her know a few days before. Also, she shouldn't need to lock her room. Make a copy of the key.

I finally had the maids visa cancelled after weeks of bickering with her because every time I'd give an inch shed want a mile. Anyway, I was on the verge of giving herr another chance because I didn't want her going back to the agency and ending up with a family that may not give her simple rights that make life slightly easier as a maid (phone, day off...) but she was so proud all the way until I finally canceled her visa and then she decides to apologize! I've lost a lot of money here so this wasn't easy for me either, why couldn't she just say she wants another chance today morning when I asked her??? I'm soo sad for her now because I don't know where she will end up. She saw me for a pushover and she used that until I couldn't take it anymore. But now m sad for her :( May I ask what sort of things she was doing that you had enough of? I'm just curious as I am experiencing maid issues, as well. :-/ It's as though you trade one issue for another....

Take it easy! some people just never learn or understand what they are doing.. Always remember that things happens for the reason! You never know what could happen later. I am sure you have more things to deal with and don't need headache as this. She may apologise but you never know what the plan is behind.. chin up! all will be ok, close the chapter and go for happier :)

It's sad to see someone blow an opportunity. Your maid had a chance to continue working with a good employer but she blew it. As long as she did learn her lesson she'll be fine, even if she has to take a "step back" by working for a less than desirable employer for a bit. Sometimes that needs to happen for people to start taking their work seriously.
