Hoping to take a vacation to US with my toddler.i will be going to Indiana. But seems like there's no direct flights . Can any one suggest some reasonable flights with less transit and hours. I was considering emirates.but it doesn't have direct flights to Chicago even. Can any one throw some ideas? Thanks in advance.

We are flying to Chicago. Decided to fly a EK/AA combo with a stopover in Heathrow. I did not want a connection in the US as we find it difficult estimating the time required to clear immigration, customs etc in a US airport. And for flying EK for half the distance, the fares came out reasonable at around 1250$ each.

What I might consider doing is f lying emirates to Toronto and then take an air canada flight direct to indianapolis. I was just in JFK and wouldn't recommend that to anyone! I will tell you why I think this is a bad idea. You will have to get your suitcase in Toronto, go through Canadian customs, and then check it again. This is doable if you are alone but very tiring if you are traveling with a toddler. The advantage of doing this, though, is that you will have to go through US customs and immigration in Toronto so when you arrive in the USA, you just walk out of the airport like you've been on a domestic flight. edited by AnonDubai on 28/04/2013 You have to do that if you land in JFK too before you can fly on to your final destination. Oh. That is true and I never thought of that. I can add that to my list of reasons for flying to the USA via Europe only then.

We fly with united from Dubai to Washington Dulles (IAD), and then from there to Chicago. So far the best most economical solution we have found.

Don't forget to get a visa to get into the USA, once you find the right flight! Depending on your nationality the rules differ, but as a French citizen I never needed to, I used to travel there and even lived there for 3 years, and always got a visa on arrival. I almost got stranded at Dubai Airport in November 2012 heading to NY as I hadn't applied! Had no idea they changed the rules. Thankfully I managed to apply online on an ipad we had, thanks to wireless internet in the airport (Emirates Terminal). The check in agent got the confirmation onscreen that we had successfully applied 3 minutes prior to closing the gate, phew! . You need to visit https://esta.cbp.dhs.gov/esta/. Bon voyage! :)

You might try searching through some of the US airline websites or a flight search engine like Kayak.com for better prices. Unfortunately, pretty much every flight to the States is EXPENSIVE. Where in Indiana are you traveling to? You won't get a direct flight to Indianapolis, but depending on what airlines you're flying, it may be just as expensive to fly into Chicago as to Indy. Otherwise, if you're heading to the southern part of the state, flying into Louisville, KY may be a much better option. But, those are going to be your options: north: Chicago, middle: Indianapolis, south: Louisville. I do believe there are shuttle buses from the terminal in Chicago to Indianapolis. May be cheaper, but would also be inconvenient after traveling so long with a toddler.

I heard on the radio that Etihad has a special for AED3615 to Dulles. That might be best, as there are hourly United flights to ORD from IAD. They usually run you about AED1200 at most.

What kind of prices are you getting? I tried every EK option and it all ends up being more than 6500AED per ticket!! it will be thats the cost of flying from here to the usa. look at where luftansa go, as thats who we have used last few times, we flew into san fran and out of miami one time.

Hi Marian, I just read that Qatar Airways fly to Chicago, I personally would also prefer the option of either NY or into Houston then make one connection, good luck!

I take either etihad to Chicago or united to Dulles and then to ord. I've traveled a lot with babies/kids and I've always preferred a direct flight over short flights with stop overs because A) I'd like to get home faster and B) transferring and walking around in airports is a pain without kids let alone with them.

You can do Emirates to JFk on the A380 and then American Airlines to O'Hare. This is what we do. Even though it is a long flight, you are still effectively returning on the same day.

For Indiana it would be most convenient to transit via Ohare So you can choose DXB-Heathrow-Chicago-Indiana on British/AA combo Alternatively you can take a direct on Etihad to Chicago or JFK, but i think 15 hours on a daytime flight will be too much with a toddler
