Hello Ladies,

So me and hubby are traveling to Amsterdam for a week in mid of June. I would really appreciate if you guys could share some 'must do' things in Amsterdam or any tips in general.

Also are any other cities worth visiting in this short period of time?

TIA!

stay on a houseboat rather than a pokey hotel. best way to feel among the locals and you save money making your own meals from gorgeous farmer's markets right in the city. also second artis zoo...fantastic

You will be near places like Edam, Alkmaar, Volendam. Those are nice places to visit. You can visit cheese factories, farms, and there is a cheese market in Alkmaar. I kind of like cheesy stuff lol. Down "south" there are Delft (famous for Delfts Blue) and Leiden (first university in Holland was established there) When in Amsterdam, have a picnic in the Vondelpark, if you have kids visit the Tropen Museum and Artis Zoo. Has an amazing planetarium, and the Hortus Botanicus. Go and see the Anne Frank House, eat Dutch Pancakes or Poffertjes, and please stay faaaar away from the Red Light District. It's not worth it.

Although I liked Anne Frank's museum and the quaint houses along canals, I have to say I was quite disturbed by the sleaze and crime in Amsterdam. Watch your handbag.

How short? You should not miss Rotterdam and Schiedam-place of the largest windmills in the world and Kinderdijk for the mills. To see, apart of the now world know Red light district, is Rijkmuseum, Van Gogh museum ... but all depends how long you'll be there. Check this http://www.timeout.com/amsterdam/features/7/20-great-things-to-do-in-amsterdam After watching a program and reading a book about a girl who was forced to work in the red light district i would avoid that place like the plague!!! Most women there are trafficked and the police are aware of this. It is disgusting!!!!! And here I'm slapped again. She asked I answered, nothing more. I wasnt targeting you and apologise if it came out that way. I personally wouldnt go within 10 feet of that place after what i read/saw

Red Light district exists, we like it or not, and is part of Amsterdam, same as the coffee shops. It doesn't mean I condone either. edited by simoralu44 on 20/05/2013

You should also check the Rijksmuseum, it was reopened last month, after being close for a long time. The Albert Cuyp Street Market is a fun outing too. And if you are interested in beer, the Heineken Experience is a great experience. edited by pmd on 20/05/2013

If you are into art and history the van gogh museum is a must. If you have time go and see an opera at the opera house, the performances are amazing, but opera is one of those things that people either love or hate. Anne Frank's house is also extremely poignant. Amsterdam is beautiful and full of culture. Some people find the live *** shows fun but I found it really disturbing and had to walk out within the fist five minutes, really would not recommend wasting your euros there. If you can visit an old dutch farm house and see how they make clogs and go about their day to day lives. Have fun!
