Serviced apartments or airbnb are probably the best bet! There are some serviced apartments in the Paddington area I have a house in central Westminster that is available for weekly rent, but it's a 1bedroom (as bedroom 2 is filled with my things!)

If you're willing to put up with very basic, university dormitory accommodation, then LSE rents out their dorm rooms during the summer months. The rooms are clean, linens are provided and they also include breakfast in the dining halls. Quite cheap, probably around 50 GBP a night? They have several dorms around London but all are in fairly central areas, including one in Bloomsbury and another one near SoHo.

just popped back in quickly to post this link. I used to work for this group of venues - I've been to all of them and they offer fantastic rates through the summer as they are primarily used as meeting/training venues and very little training bookings take place in peak holiday season so they offer amazing deals through the summer. The Greenwich venue is best for London. the others offer country house hotel type accommodation with beautiful grounds often a pool and a spa - on tap tea and coffee stations etc etc. Their summer specials are starting at £19 a night for some of their locations - kids stay for free!!!!! http://www.deverevenues.co.uk/offer/venues-summer-lovin-2013/ As I think of others Irooni I will post. If you are coming for 3 weeks then we absolutely will get together with the kids - how exciting! As long as I am not away!

The Premier inn in Leicester Sq is very well located but tends to be costlier than other Premier Inns The 2 Premier Inns near Earls Court station are generally better value and the tube staion is great to access the Piccadilly as well as District/Central Lines thistles are slightly better and costlier, but the Thistle Piccadilly Circus is great as rooms are much larger than your average London room and are newly refurbished edited by Arch on 22/05/2013

If you don't mind self catering - Citidenes have various central locations. True but they are quite steep. 360 EUR per night in Paris last time I looked.

Thanks desertrose, thats reassuring :) Irooni this is the one I use when in London and I couldn't believe my luck the first time I turned up and saw how central I was to everything. I was 5 mins walk from Piccadilly Circus and 5 minutes walk from Theatre Land. China Town was at the end of the street. I could go out for a walk and 15 minutes later be going up the Mall and into St James park. I really cant praise it highly enough but then again I am a Premier Inn convert - I just plain refuse to pay London Hotel prices anymore because they are such a hit and miss afair. I use this hotel when I travel alone and when I'm travelling with my son. Its very safe and if you don't stay there, there is no getting in at night. The breakfast is good and buffet style and if you can order whatever eggs you like. You get wifi and there is a good selection of tv channels in the room. I stay at the Premier Inns up and down the country and have never been disappointed with my choice. http://www.premierinn.com/en/hotel/LONLEI/london-leicester-square Ive also rented a house in central London, it was an upstairs down stairs kind of house and that was really fun, there was everything we needed nearby and whilst it was great to give my grandchildren home cooked meals every night - I much preferred staying at the premier inn with them later on in the holiday. The Rain Forest Café is just round the corner and Hamleys is a short walk away as well. I used to love walking home at night when the Chinese restaurants were coming to life. Sounds great. I am planning on 3-4 weeks, so don't want to pay mad prices!

the premier inns are good and very safe as feefmick says. The county Hall one is right by the London Eye and the Leicester Square one is in a great location. some of the others in London are quite a way out. They do family rooms. http://www.premierinn.com There are also serviced apartments that are great - will try to remember the websites for those for you. another really cost effective accommodation option is the university accommodations that are not used in the summer months. There are also training facilities that are not busy in the summer months - I will see if I can find some links for you. Hope we can meet up if you are coming over to London! I will wait for your links Claire. We will definitely meet up, if my plans to come work out ;)

Very safe. They have reception desk manned at all times. PS I do not recommend Formula1 places in UK...they are scary. No reception staff and as a result used as knocking shops. edited by Feefmick on 21/05/2013

Thank you all. Your replies are all very helpful. Would the inns and lodges be safe? :) sorry if that sounds daft.

we tried this last year and loved it. it was literally like having a holiday home. onefinestay dot com. loved the locations, everything from the beautiful welcome hamper from East India Company, to the iPhone with local SIM that was complementary, free car park, convenience of a homestay and the comfort and privacy of a hotel.. for a long stay it was much cheaper than staying at a hotel.

Premier inns are better than travel lodges but both are great and standard accommodation. Family rooms good size.

I always stay in a premier inn these days and the newly opened one just off Leicester square is very good.

Premier inns or travel lodges are basic but functional.

Go to booking.com and select your dates. You can arrange the results in order of price, which will give you an idea of what's available. You can also select specific areas of London.

hi well hotels in Londond tend to be old expensive (200 pounds plus per night) tiny tiny rooms My sister stays in the St giles, which is a 3 star. Google it I dont't know much about it. We stay at the Hilton London Bridge if yu book way in advance usually you can get. great rate und er 200 pounds. it is modern. great location service not great but this is London! If these are too cheap for you I have better recommendations if too expensive try easyhotels

I honestly don't know what to expect. I have always either gone on Daddy's account ;) in my yesteryears or its been a couple of days at a heathrow. So I am not sure what I should expect.
