Pre school practice. I have the textbook for the later, looks equally as bad! edited by Elmpark on 03/02/2014 I am thinking of doing the Level 3 Diploma for Children and Young Peoples Workforce - Disappointing to hear that the course is not interesting. I looked into doing it from EYES (Sarah Rogers) in knowledge village but NEC is much cheaper for the same qualification. And with Eyes , I will need to finish the Level 2 first as I have no previous Nursery work experience. I have been told that with NEC we can directly do the Level 3. @Elmpark, did you have to do the Level 2 before doing the Level 3 Pre school diploma? Also do you feel that the course could have been more interesting if instead of doing it online, it was done by attending the 3 hr weekly workshops? @smf, I have also heard that the same course can be done by City & Guilds in Dubai. edited by Glitzi on 03/02/2014 No I haven't done level 2 just straight in at level 3. I have friends from work doing it both at Knowledge village and also at city and guilds, the latter is cheaper I think. Yes probably a class room based course would be more interesting but for me was far more expensive than I would wish to pay for this qualification. I am basically doing it as I currently work in a pre-school setting that requires me to have the qualification. I had hoped it would give me ideas and practical advice but it really doesn't and also has so little relevance to nurseries here...so constantly have to pretend that I am in the UK...quite tricky as I have never worked in a UK nursery! If money is no object then do the classroom based one as it just HAS to be better! edited by Elmpark on 04/02/2014 Sorry for the late response Elmpark - Thanks a lot for your reply! I have decided to not go with the online option, so it would be either City and guilds or EYES. I agree that a classroom based course would keep it more interesting.

I've just downloaded it for £14.99, for a year! Rowellian, where did you find the that downloadable option? That is such a good price- I was checking for it on their site and it says £ 40 for overseas subscriptions! If you subscribe in UK then it is £17

Same here smf, it is a big career change for me as well...excited and apprehensive at the same time! I have not spoken to any nurseries....is it easy to get a voluntary position with a Nursery? Do they pay you some basic allowance for it ? For the course - I am pretty confused as well...but am leaning more towards the city and guild course rather than doing it online.

From their reply, I understand that we would have to find the Assessor ourselves and if the Assessor is based out of Dubai we would have to pay for their flight and the fee ( I had read this on another institute's website, for overseas students) Yes, I would like to finish the Level 3 course in about a year's time - so the EYES option of finishing it in 2 years along with the huge difference in price is not appealing. I will research the City and guild option as it may take away the headache of finding the Assessor. smf , do you have any previous nursery work experience or you already volunteering in one? I believe that's the other prerequisite? Everything is a bit vague for me at this stage.... edited by Glitzi on 04/02/2014

@smf I had sent an email to Nec to find out if we would need to be assessed at workplace for the Level 3 (DCYPW) This is the reply I got: [i'>[i'>Thank you for your enquiry. Because you are overseas we cannot send our tutor to do the final observation in the workplace. You can either nominate a qualified assessor, whom we will vet before you begin the course. An attachment describes their qualifications required. Or there are organisations appearing who can supply an assessor in some regions.[/i'>[/i'>

I was considering the Cache level 3 diploma from www.nec.ac.uk a few months back. There was some confusion regarding the need to have an Assessor come an observe you at the workplace. I wasn't sure how that would be possible with an online course. But to be honest I did not investigate it any further and I am still not sure if that really is a requirement. This is the link to that thread: http://www.expatwoman.com/qatar/forum/topic203002-question-for-the-nursery-teachers.aspx Since then, I am again reconsidering the course, so please update the thread if you find something out :) HTH

Can anyone help me. Are there any slimming world classes in dubai. If so where abouts are they. Thanks There aren't but I have all the new lists if you need them Sarah, I have been thinking of starting the diet for a while after reading a few threads on the EW Health section. Are you a member of the Slimming World site - Just wondering if it is worth joining? I looked for the Slimming world books in bookstores but could not find them anywhere. I have only seen the magazines in Borders...Would you be able to to send me the list by email () ? Kaz77, I also looked for the classes in Dubai but could not find any. I did bookmark this website http://www.minimins.com/ for when I decide to start it -It has plenty of recipes and meal diaries to get some ideas. edited by Glitzi on 15/08/2013 edited by Glitzi on 15/08/2013

Not sure this will help you coco pops, but I have seem a section in Geant supermarket stocking the same organic brand of buckwheat, amaranth etc that is available at the Organics Food and Cafe. Maybe it'll be worthwhile to do a price comparison with organics -may workout cheaper.

Thanks apr04. Yes I am happy with the fabric price which is around Dhs 450 but they are charging me Dhs 65/sqmt stitching (Dhs 700in total) for unlined, simple american style heading tape curtains and this is when I already have the double rails installed so dont need installation. Never been to Satwa - Would you know any tailor that I could go to? edited by Glitzi on 17/12/2012

Has anyone seen coloured blackout fabric for curtains being sold in dragon mart? Besides the black and white -I know that it is available in many coloured shades with cutain shops but they are charging me a ridiculous amount for stitching simple curtains. So was thinking of getting them done in dragon mart if it is available there. TIA

Thanks everyone. We have decided to just buy some coloured blackout fabric and get it stitched from a tailor. We need simple curtains with hemming on all sides and the American Style tape stitched on the top. The bedroom already has the rails installed so we can put them up ourselves. Does anyone know of a tailor who could stitch these for us? Thanks a lot!

I have one, which we have used on vacations and short hotel stays and really like it. It takes almost no space and is really practical for holidays when you dont want to waste luggage allowance on a heavy travel cot. We also have a graco travel cot but always preferred to take the samsonite pop up on vacations or when visiting friends. The only thing to consider is that once the little ones can move a lot or sit up they might be able to tip it (typically around 8-10 months)- so u'll need to wedge it between some furniture or start using a sturdier travel cot. I know that Goodbaby at bur dubai use to stock them . In case you are looking at buying a used one, I'm selling ours as DS has grown out of it. In case you are interested my email is

Hi all, I've been researching the next car seat for my 11 month old son and have discovered, by chance, that rear facing car seats till at least 4 years of age is now the recommendation. I've been advised by a website in the UK and one in Sweden to go for the Britax Hi-Way 2 ot Two Way Elite for my Mitsibushi Pajero 5 door. I was just wondering if any of you have either of these seats and what your thoughts are? Could you also let me know what kind of car you drive as I know that rear facing seats don't fit all makes of cars well. I'm just a little worried about ordering these seats without trying to fit them in our Pajero first. Thanks in advance for any help. Hi Angela, sorry cant offer any help but we are also looking at buying the next level carseat for DS who has outgrown his infant car seat. We would also like to keep DS rear facing as long as possible but in a seat with a forward facing option as well.I was at babyshop ibn batuta today and saw the maxicosi tobi and priori xp but both are front facing :( .They dint have any britax in stock but I will go to dubai mall tomorrow to see which britax models are available there. Would you be able to tell me how much is it costing you to get the seat down from carseat.se? That does seem to be a great option just hope its not too expensive.

we just got our 12 mo a wishbone bike from nz for his birthday. they stock them at bumblebee at dubai mall. it's a little big for him now but he can still ride it. the best thing is that it converts 3 ways and lasts till the kids are 5 years old. it really is gorgeous and well made too. here's the link http://www.wishbonedesign.com looks lovely but expensive? We were also thinking of getting a trike for our LO for christmas. Also going to get the one from ELC - think its 695AED? Yeah I checked at the MOE Elc today and they had one for AED 595 for 6 months+ and another for AED 695 for 10 months+ @Shelly - Its true as long as your DD loves it that's what counts. Guess we'll go ahead and get one for DS and hope that he likes it too :)

We bought DD a Smart Trike from ELC. To be completely honest, its not that great as the steering is not the best, but DD loves it so thats the main thing. Which one did you buy Shelly? I believe they are 3 kinds with different options such as recliners etc.We are planning on getting the Smart Trike for DS as his Christmas present. Disappointed to hear that its not all that great. Took me forever to decide what to get him :(

I would love to live in Greens. I really like it, it has a great vibe about it and time wise will probably take the same to get to AD as there aren't the road works issues like there are in JLT. A lot of the apartments I have been shown are in Old Greens (Al Arta) and are around 700 Sq feet including the balcony, which is tiny. Honestly, oyou just walk in your front door and then you are practically on your balcony. I'm looking for something at least 850 sq ft. I think the ones that have an ensuite bathroom and a guest toilet are bigger (Al Arta only has one bathroom) but I haven't been taken to see any of these - they are proving to be very illusive. That is the problem with most emaar apartments- they are quite small. JLT and Tecom apartments will definitely be more spacious. The Views (next to the Greens) is also a great place to live and if you can find something there for 60k as mentioned by the earlier poster, it sounds like a very good option.I believe the apartments in the Links and fairways are relatively more spacious than the old phase.

Have you considered the Greens? I know several people living there and driving to AD - just a short drive to sh zayed rd. Personally I feel it might be a better option than tecom -has a great community feel, lots of greenery. Has choithram, costa and quite a few restaurants at walking distance. But probably 60k would get you a 1br in the 1st phase. If you want, I could check with a friend if her place is available - she is moving out of her 1 bedroom apartment in a week or so. And you wont have to deal with agents and ofcourse save on commissions as well since she owns the place ;) I live there and it is a great place to live. I am in the newer phases so my rent is slightly higher however i have seen 1 beds for 50,000AED Yeah that seems to be the price range around 50-55k.

Just checked and instead of the 4 wood pieces i mentioned in my previous post, there is just a wooden bar which screws onto the two legs of the cot (the mattress wooden base is resting on these 2 bars on either side). You can use an allen key to unscrew that bar and just shift it up to one of the other holes for your desired height and screw it back. Do the same to the other side as well. HTH

Lemondrops, DS is 9 months and also has around 450-500 ml milk a day. He is established on solids and happily has his three meals on most days. I don't given him juices but he has a few sips of water in the day. He is quite active and weighs around 10kgs - I'm not sure if his milk intake is sufficient so will be watching this thread as I've have wondered the same thing especially because lately he has been reducing his morning milk intake quite drastically.

I have the same cot but DS is taking his nap so will check it once he wakes up and let you know. But from memory I think the mattress wooden base is resting on 4 wood pieces which are attached to the legs of the cot. You need to unscrew those 4 pieces and move them up (to the higher hole)and screw them back. There are 3 holes on each leg for the different positions. Not sure if that makes sense :) - but will double check and let you know after he wakes up.

[u'>[u'>[b'>Sorry I meant fake Fitflops in the title but am unable to edit it now.[/b'>[/u'>[/u'> I visited a shop in Mercato during the the Eid holidays which had a part sale running. They had Fit Flops on sale at 25% discount. I tried some and could not find my size but saw several Fitflop sandals in half sizes such as 5 1/2 or 6 1/2 etc. Dint think much at that time until I was on the Official Fit Flop website today which clearly stated that they only manufacture fit flops in whole numbers and to size down in case you are between size :\: So does this mean that even after paying ridiculous Dubai marked up prices we are not sure if we are buying genuine products!! Ofcourse I will be contacting the store management and taking this further with them. Is there a number to report this? edited by Glitzi on 08/09/2011

I cant advise on Mei Hip but I have the Ergo and bjorn. DS is around 8 kgs now and it is starting to get difficult to carry in the bjorn for over 30-45 mins. It was really great when he was younger. The Ergo is much better now but then again you cant carry them facing outward in that. But I love the Ergo as it sits lower on the hip.. I feel it gives me better weight distribution. HTH Thanks Glitzi... I suspected that the babybjorn will not be the best option as my baby gets heavier. Do you know where to buy the Ergo in Dubai? babysouk.com is not available for the month of July :( Yeah I know..it is sad that they are closed, wanted to get some stuff as well. You can check the place granola suggested or order directly from the ergo site as they deliver to Dubai now. I've repeated this very often and here I go again - Please dont buy used carriers unless you know the person you are buying from. Sorry but both of mine are in use with DS. I wanted to say that they are great. I bought mine new off a UK website in 2008 and they are now being used second time around! I think that they have great resale value if you need to buy them new. I bought mine in neutral and pale blue, just in case my second child would be a boy. Worked for me! Just checked and yes they are available on amazon and as usual much cheaper than Dubai. So will look into the option as well..Thanks for the tip!

We're in the UK for the summer and the lightweight umbrella stroller we brought with us - I think it's a Mothercare Jive - is soon to be destroyed by sledgehammer for being the world's most irritating stroller. I thought of a Quinny Zapp to replace it but my sister thinks the handles are quite low and that's one of the main things I struggle with on the Jive. Does anyone have any experience of them? And if the Zapp's a no go, any other suggestions? I don't want to spend too much. Thanks :). DC, how about a Maclaren? I have the Techno XT which is excellent -got great wheels and really sturdy and almost reclines flat. I also have the Maclaren Quest which I bought 2nd hand for travelling, which is pretty much the same and a bit lighter. Wheels are a bit smaller, very lightweight and has a comfortable recline. My sisters has used this for 4 years and its still works great. Both are great strollers in my opinion and I am sure you'll be able to get them much cheaper in UK. If I am not mistaken the Quest is around Dhs800 and the techno is Dhs 1100 in Dubai (Full price, not on sale) in case you would like to make a comparison. The other 2 mac models volo and triumph have lesser features, but triumph could be still considered. Btw I was considering the Mothercare Jive --and bought the quest eventually as it is the same weight and has excellent reviews. HTH
