Hi, We've just moved our 3 yo into a big bed and I'd like to get him a clock that lets him know when it's okay to get up. Has anyone seen those toddler clocks around recently? TIA

They won't turn babies here they are not allowed to even try, so it is usually straight out cesarean unless the baby turns itself. My daughter who was born in June was breech and Dr. Elsa at City did try to turn her. I've spoken to a number of women in dubai who have also had ecvs. Unfortunately it didn't work and I went on to have a c-section. We discussed delivering her vaginally and while my dr didn't refuse outright she strongly recommended a c-section. The delivery went well and I'm glad I followed her recommendation. While the cs was not my ideal in the end it wasn't that big of a deal. Good luck to you!

I've breastfed in cafes and restaurants here for 15 months and never had so much as a strange look. I use a cover but have seen a woman in niqab who just had her breast out with no cover and noone seemed shocked by it. I think it kind of fits in with the region's general pro family approach.

Giving up the dummy in a small baby is often not as bad as you fear. When ds was 8 months we went cold turkey on a Thursday and by Sunday it was as if he'd never had one. I've heard it gets a lot harder after a year though. We're trying to avoid the dummy with our nb this time (because of the searching for it in the night thing) but not sure we'll make it, almost cracked last night when she didn't settle from 12-3.

Thanks kiwi- I have to admit that haven't been on much since bf-ing my ods. The LC on staff at city came to talk to me just as they were taking my 3 day old daughter who appeared to be bleeding internally down to nicu so I have to admit I was not very receptive as I just wanted to go to my baby. I'm not sure I'll get a chance to speak to her before I leave assuming we are both discharged tomorrow, but will certainly try. The nurses are very kind but are recommending only hand expressing, I'm afraid that a few days of formula and hand expressing for a very small baby will be the end of bfing for us, I will try to contact dr Delphine to get an appt. How many days do you think we can go without bfing before it gets critical?

Hi, My daughter was born 3 days ago. She started bfing enthusiastically from the start but i think I was positioning her incorrectly due to pp cesarean pain and my nipples became ******. Now that I can sit well I think we've solved the latch problem but she began projection vomiting black blood last night around 11pm. She then did a small ****** spit up around 2 am. This morning at 10am she vomited bright red blood and was admitted to nicu for monitoring and tests. All of her tests came back ok (fbc and anticoagulation) and the pediatrician is thinking it was my blood she threw up and not her own. Just in case she is being observed in nicu for 24 hrs, they will test her vomit if it happens again and the ped wants her on formula for this period. I tried to pump to keep my supply up but a lot of blood came and the nurse told me to stop and hand express. I was able to get only 20 mls but the ped won't let me give them to her anyway. My milk has mostly come in and just prior to this happening although the first 5 secs were painful after it was painfree and she seemed to be nursing well. Assuming she doesn't vomit again and the ped agrees that this was my blood and not hers when can I start nursing again? The nurse told me I should hand express for several days to allow my nipples to heal but I am afraid we'll never get back on the breast in that case as i simply cant get enough milk this way. Even these 24 hours on formula have me nervous! I bfed my son for 14 months and very much want to do the same for my daughter. Do you have any advice? I am also currently putting meb cream on my nipples to help heal, is this safe for the baby? Thanks for your advice!

I had a very reasonable midwife tell me that if I was able to get my lo outside into the sun for half an hour per day he didn't need the drops but if not she recommended them. Ds was born in April so I gave him the drops till we went home for the summer and from that point on just had him outside. This baby will be born in June so we're stuck here for the summer and it's too hot to take a nb out so I will give her the drops till it cools off, probably October. The drops available here aren't great IMO, they have parabens in them so I asked my mother to bring some from France. If you are planning on using something not aimed at newborns check with your dr about the dose. Breast fed babies don't get enough vit d on their own, you really do need to either get outside or give drops.

None of the acupuncture/ moxibustion / all fours / balancing ice cream on stomach worked for me so I went in for my ecv this morning. Unfortunately it didn't work either so I'm booked in for a Caesar on the 21. Dr. Elsa told me that often when it doesn't work it turns out to be for a reason, either the cord is too short or hooked around a shoulder. She tried to turn the baby a few times, it was definitely uncomfortable, but not as painful as I feared. A couple of times it really felt like it was working but then she popped back up. Her hb stayed fine the whole time and it wasn't particularly scary. Lmao - if your lo is still breech I would recommend trying it, it really wasn't that bad and at least now I feel like I've given it my best. I'm going to keep trying the ice cream trick :-) but otherwise try to make peace with the idea of a cs and enjoy the last few days of my pregnancy.

Hello, Hope everyone is doing well! Can you believe how hot it is?! I feel like I'm in the home stretch. The nursery is almost done (poor dh probably has pbk nightmares now :-) and just waiting for the baby to make her move. I'm going in for my version today so will also finally know whether I need to come to terms with a cs. I'm still holding out hope that we will discover she turned on her own since my last appt but if not hopefully the dr can turn her! After having ds vaginally the idea of a section for no 2 kind of bums me out. Otherwise not much to report, hope everyone is staying cool! Pancake - where are you delivering? We might be at the hospital together :-)

Still breech :-( I've been on all fours and enthousiastically working on the cold encouragement technique (that's the one where you set your ice cream on the top of your stomach with the hope that the baby doesn't like the cold and will move her head away from it.) I've also had my 2 yo singing at my crotch level but Dr. Elsa nixxed the diving in the pool idea so it looks like i might need to get my head around the c-sec as I've pretty much cycled through the options at this point. I've booked my ecv and in the meantime am going for acupuncture at the chinese medical center next to City tomorrow. It's a pretty wild place, the dr doesn't speak english and during my whole appointment sat and giggled with the interpreter (who's english is still pretty approximate) while occasionaly looking at my tongue. Must say I'm not overly confident but it can't hurt. . .

The cot is actually bigger than standard cots and will turn into a toddler bed so we'll be using them for a while. I had to actually buy full (adult) sized sheets so it's too much to tuck.

Hello! 35 weeks for me and starting to feel like I've had about enough. I can't complain as everything's gone well till now but must say I'm starting to feel hot, enormous and tired. A bit bummed as baby has turned head up now. I'm going in Sunday to see if she has flipped back around and if not will book an ecv for next week which has me a bit nervous. I had ds vaginally and it just seems a shame to wreck both exit routes :-). On a lighter note just dragged dh to pbk where I forced him to pretend to care about the nursery theme. He didn't fake it very well. I unwittingly bought a strange sized cot so now need to find a tailor to transform my double sheets into boori bed sized fitted crib sheets if anyone knows a good one? Hope everyone is doing well and staying cool!

Hi LMAO, I'm 34 wks and she seemed to think that if the baby was going to turn on her own she would do it before my next appt at 36wks. The ideal time for an ecv is 36 weeks for first pregnancies and 37 for subsequent ones, so you have time. I think I'm going to try to set up a moxibustion appt for next week, will keep you posted!

With my 2 yo we just don't go in before 7:00. We started that around 12 mos and he knows that's the way it is. He usually sleeps from 8:30 pm to 7:30 or 8:15 in the morning but on the rare occasions that he is awake before 7:00 he sings and plays quietly in bed till we go in. One thing to keep in mind is that most toddlers don't need 14 hours of sleep so if you are putting them down at 7 and doing a long nap there's not much chance of them making it past 6 after 14 mos or so.

Thanks for the replies! Does anyone know the ideal time to do moxibustion? I'm seeing Dr. Elsa and she suggested the ECV. I've done a bit of research and apparently the success rate is about 60% for women who have already given birth and is fairly low risk so I guess there's no reason not to try if the rest doesn't work. My favorite suggestion so far was to play music at your crotch level to try to tempt the baby down :-)

Hi everyone, Just found out today that my little girl is breech. My Dr. says that there is still a chance that she could turn in the next two weeks and that if she hasn't we can try ECV. I've been doing a bit of reading on the internet and saw that some people have had luck with moxibustion (it's a sort of accupuncture done to your little toe.) Not really my style usually but I figure it can't hurt and so was wondering if anyone has done it in dubai or knows where one can do so? Also, has anyone had a succesful ECV? I guess I'll try as I'd really prefer to avoid a caeser but would love to hear some success stories. TIA!

We paid more that 10'000 dhs for Duma safe to childproof our flat when ds was about 6 mos old and within 3 months all the protections had fallen off. We've since moved and this time dh has gone to karama to buy door locks and plexiglass and done the work himself, much more secure and probably didn't spend 300 dhs. We put hotel room style locks ( with the chain) on the windows and have also shored up our balustrade. Also remember to attach big bookshelves etc to the wall for when the little monsters start climbing:-)

We hired a maid who had been at an agency at the end of her contract and it was still a nightmare! The agency refused to let her leave telling her if she didn't sign on with them again she'd be banned. They made her work without pay for 1 month after her visa expired to 'train' her replacement and then accompanied her to the airport to make sure she left. We ended up flying her back and starting the visa process after that. Maybe your maid's agency will be more reasonable but it might be hard.

When I delivered at city in 2010 I was on oxytocin and needed to return to the bed to be monitored once an hour for about 15 minutes ( or 5 min every 30 min I think, def something like this) then I was free to be up again and walking. The midwives were very good about liberating me as soon the monitoring period was up.

I would be hesitant to start feeding in front of the tv, but I'm pretty anti tv for toddlers in general. Do you usually eat dinner as a family? I've found that my 21 mo eats a lot more vegetables when we eat together. If papa is eating it he will usually try it too.Your lo might be a happier eater if she were feeding herself too. GL!

Jamie's Italian in Festival City is my favourite w kids. The food is excellent and it's finally licensed. It's a very kid friendly environment and you can get half portions of all of the pasta dishes for the kids. For Brunch I'd go with Bubbilicious at the Westin, lots of entertainment for the kids with nice champagne and food for the adults.

We did Air Berlin to Malaga last month, Dubai - Berlin, Berlin - Malaga. On the Dubai- Berlin flight there was a free hot meal and you could also purchase other stuff, on the shorter leg there was a free sandwich I think, so no need to pack food. The flight was okay, my only complaint was that every single flight was at least an hour late. Otherwise no individual screens (i know, been spoiled on emirates :-) but inflight movie was ok.
