I went to the main office in Al Barsha today. My ID is expired and I had to get a new ID for my maid and my three children. They said the Al Barsha typing center was no longer taking anyone as they were full. (this was around 10:00 a.m.) so they suggested a place by the Burj Khalifia. I asked someone else where the closest typing center was at and they sent us to Dubai Knowledge Village bldg 12. We went there and arrived just at 11:00 a.m. and they said they weren't taking anymore people for the day as they were full. They did give us the forms to fill out and a half hour later we asked again if we could get an appt and they accepted us and DH turned in all of our passports and applications and paid the fees for 2 year ID cards. They said they would SMS us later in the day or possibly tomorrow with our appt and we could go back and get our passports and have the maid finger printed.

GirlAnachronism... please tell me the steps that you did to get this ID card sorted. I have read so many different stories about what to 1st and where to go, blah, blah... could you give me the facts. much appreciated :-) I went to the typing centre in Al Barsha (it should have the location on the site), paid the fee for my 2 year's ID card, gave them my passport (yesterday). Today at 12pm I went back and collected my passport and the typed form, went to the ID place in Barsha (the one between Civil Defense and the petrol station on the road leading to/from TECOM). They did all my handprints and took a photo. There was a bit of confusion as I received a text telling me to go to Rashidiya, but it turns out you can just go to any ID place without an appointment as long as you have the form. Card should be delivered in a month or so I recived an appointment to go to Rashidiya and my husband got one saying that he needs to go to Al barsha as did my housemaid. We all turned up at Al barsha and I asked if I can get fingerprinted here as I live across the road, husband is here and I cant go all the way to Rashidiya and the man behind the counter gave me a number and I did the fingerprint scans at Al barsha too !

I don't think you can just go anywhere without an appointment and I would be very unwise just showing up without one especially at Al Barsha, we did ours for the second time around 6 weeks ago and made an appointment which you automatically get. ( We had just done my maid s a few weeks before that too and the process was the same each time). If you don't want to go to the Rashidiya one you have been allotted you should call up speak to someone and then they can change to Al Barsha. They only have certain times, and you chose which date, time etc from the choice they give you. Even with an appointment on the day to do my fingerprints it took 2 hours of sitting and waiting whilst a few local's decided they did not want to wait in the que so kept pushing in. I was not the only one waiting, we just had to sit and wait no choice. After that the usual process of having it sent to the PO Box and only took around a week this time before it was posted to us. Be prepared for the usual frustration though.

Can you give me the name of the building you went to? Thank you!

Well I suppose one way to look at it to offset the fine ( if you get one) with what you would have paid in useless ID cards! Probably quids in...;)

FYI I went to do mine today and no fine. They said it's just for government or freezone employees. I wonder if there are some dodgy typing centres ripping people off?

Does anyone know the closest typing center to Arabian Ranches? DH is taking the day off tomorrow to get this sorted out. His ID is fine, mine is expired, our three children don't have one, and apparently now the maid needs one. We will be busy with paperwork tomorrow. edited by SunDevil on 05/02/2012

You're kidding! [b'> So if my husband (my sponsor) works in Internet City, the deadline of 1 December (actioned 1 January) applies to me?[/b'> How can the government enforce that when it was not written anywhere publically and what was written publically (on the government's website) was the deadline of "1 June for Dubai Residents" ? In our case only DH got the fine, i didn`t.

ok so i've just called to find out about this issue of 'semi-gov' or not. Apparently if you are in Dubai Media/ Internet City, you are considered as semi-government, as your sponsor (as per your visa) is DMC, which is Semi-Gov! Very very frustrating as I now have over AED700 fines - even more annoying as I am renewing my ID, the first one was completely pointless didn't even get it out of my purse once in 2 years!!! Apparently, they started fines as of 1st Jan '12 for semi-gov, even though the website says as of 1st Dec '11. Hope that clarifies, i'm off now to go and get mine sorted before i get charged anything more WHAT? my husband is my sponser, work there also? never told a word about needing a ID for anyone but him, the sponser? ughhhhhhhhhh Thanks though

Ladies, dont kill me, but i guess we need these? I have 3 kids.....plus me....none of us had them- only my husband got one? Yes you all need them unfortunately so check which category you fall into and make sure you don't miss the deadline because for 4 of you the fines could really add up.

You do have to pay the fees and fines to the typing centre - that is the process. If you have a Dubai residency visa and you (or your husband if sponsored by him) work for a private company then the deadline is June 1st and you will not be fined now. However if your residency visa is Abu Dhabi the deadline is April 1st, Sharjah is February 1st and other emirates have passed already and the fines are racking up at 20 dhs per day. The deadline for those who work for government or semi government companies has also passed and those people will receive fines. The fines do seem to be applied consistently but I think that the confusion is around the type of companies that people work for because many don't seem to realise which companies are semi government. I have called the Emirates ID authority to check this with them and they have confirmed the above and have promised me that as I have a Dubai visa from a private company that my deadline has not yet arrived and therefore I will not be fined. However I will admit that I called twice to make sure I got the same answer from 2 different people!! edited by dibdab on 05/02/2012 My husband works for a private Belgian-owned company of 7employees. In the free zone. Yet he did get fined. So which category is that? Hmm that is a very good question! My friend works in a free zone and was fined and says that her company is classed as semi government - but I don't know if that is because it is a free zone? So maybe free zones are classed as semi government for some reason? Give the Emirates ID authority a call because if he has been fined and definitely doesn't belong to any of the overdue categories then they may be able to help - when I spoke to them they were adamant that it was impossible to receive a fine unless in the overdue categories. If so, it`s dishonest to classify free zone as ''semi-goverment''. Nope, if they want to fine you, they WILL fine you, calling them or arguing with them will be pointless. As someone said earlier on EW-''ID card fiasco''.

Appletiser, be careful as some have applied with no fine only to be contacted later and told they have to pay before processing goes any further.... :(

Firstly I wouldn't pay any fines to the typing center (or do you have to pay the card fee there as well?)/ Soon my fine will be dhs1000 - what happens then? Anyways if I already have max dhs1000 no rush to apply for the card?!?

Is there anyone on here that has applied for a new ID card in the last couple of weeks that hasnt been fined? My DH and I applied two weeks ago and we were not fined. DH works for Emirates too. I think this 'fine system' is inconsistent. Some people are being fined, some not. Weird.

Oh dear me!! I must be the only person who didn't realise these cards ran out!! Mine expired years ago!! Now frantically trying to find info. I have tried filling out the form online but can't get the address in arabic and the form keeps being denied. How do I go about getting an appointment at one of the typing centres? Can you just turn up or do you have to call for a booking? Hope its a lot easier than when I first got my card years ago. How did I miss you needed to renew these?? argh!!!
