I apologize for the vague title of the thread but I kept on coming up with weird titles that would put you all off reading my post so here goes my question :-)

My daughter is nearly 18 months old and has recently started blocking her ears as soon as I start breadtfeeding her. It is clearly not out of pain or anything like that, just as some sort of comfort it seems? Is that common? She doesn't do it when she feeds from a bottle so I found it a bit strange and am concerned that something might be wrong. As soon as I offer my b**b, she hurries and blocks both ears with her forefingers and continues to feed peacefully. Please share and hopefully those of you BF gurus will shed some light on this. Thanks!

Lols..... soooo cute!!! My bubba loves to play with his toes while feeding, and sometimes tries to put his toe in the mouth alongside the ni**le! There was a stage when he used to bang his fist on his forehead.... I used to be mortified as he woudn't stop when i would hold his hand, and his forehead would turn red. Thankfully he outgrew that stage pretty fast.

Does anyone else's child say "3 ..... 2 ...... 1 ..... Go" before he starts bfing? :D My 1.5 yr old does! :/: nope but mine says "finished, mummy put the lid back on" when he's done! He,he,he! My 1.5 yr old DD does the same: " Finished, no more" and then points at my other b**b and says "more boo boo" edited by snowflake12 on 25/05/2012

when ds was a newborn he used to hold one arm rigid straight up in the air while feeding (like superman flying) I remember asking the pediatrician about it and she more or less said "babies just do weird things".

Thank you ladies, Glad to know it is common. Now that I think about it, my eldest used to keep his fingers tucked in my under arm when I used to feed him, of course tickling me whenever he moved his fingers and making me so uncomfortable. Just felt worried the blocking ears might be related to feeling some sort of pain. Gotta love motherhood. The joys. :-)

It's possible she likes the sound. If you block your ears while eating or drinking or talking the sound is louder. Maybe she did it once and now she likes it. Interesting all the same!

no but mine twirls his hair in his fingers and pulls my hair out, my friend's son pinches her other nipple, so ear blocking is you getting off lightly. :)

soothing and comfort are a big factor in nursing, so I would think that this is a comfort ritual your daughter has whenever she nurses, i would guess just because it makes her feel good. Be thankful that her comfort thing during nursing isn't pinching your other breast or something.....As long as she seems happy just let her do what she needs to do.

Maybe she doesn't like the sound?
