A few years ago I visited a compound in dubai. I was the only adult sitting outside a friend's villa when noticed 2 little girls ages about 5 &7 one on the steps to pool and one nearby. When I looked again she had moved from the steps and was under water to eye level. I raced down those steps and hauled her out she was coughing and spluttering. I think there was a grandparent at the villa they came from who was meant to be looking after them. It had all happened so very quickly. edited by ladylink on 10/09/2012

No. Even if the kids can swim, accidents can happen, we were on holiday once and 8 year old lad, that could swim like a fish, sadly drown. Not sure any decent parent would even consider letting their kids use a pool unattended.

Its great to hear this from all of you. I don't have children, but evenings I have been going to my pool in the Springs and have been shocked to see a group of kids there swimming with no adult supervision. All of this despite the sign saying 'no under 14s unsupervised'. They are often pretty mouthy to the lifeguard, who has no authority (he once told them off and they said they would call the police on him, nice!) and I spend my time either annoyed by their attitude or stressed out feeling I need to keep an eye on the little ones! I am new to the area so not too sure who to tell about this or whether it would make a difference! But it doesn't feel safe, eldest might be 14, youngest probably 6!

Absolutely not. That link you've posted is a great article coco pops, I'm always recommending it to people. It should be compulsory reading for everyone.

Never. Too much of a risk. First if you're not there you don't know who else is there. Second they could drown in an instance whether they are strong swimmers or not

NO.... having been here for 6 years with 2 children one now about to fly the nest, I have seen too many reports of unsupervised swimming leading to drowning. Even at a birthday party for a young child in the school I teach in. As the last poster said when they are 18 maybe ok...my boy is 18 next month and I will always worry.

Mine are 8 and 11 and both in swim squads. Only allowed at pool if I'm there even though there is a life guard. I do go to the gym but watch from the window and only use equipment at the window. If I return to apartment for anything they sit on the edge till I come back. They're good swimmers but if someone dragged them down or jumped on top of them.....

Having had the misfortune to come across a scene where an 8 year old was found at the bottom of a hotel pool - despite apparantley being able to swim - and seeing that and the aftermath of his distraught parents, the answer is absolutely no way never.

No way. My daughter (10) swims in a squad but she isn't allowed in our pool at home unless she's with an adult or another equally sensible and equally capable child of 10 or above. Hope all the replies make things easier with your boys.

Nope. Not a chance. I'm there all the time. One woman in my building seems to think its okay to leave kids alone in the pool. There are 5 boys, oldest being about 10 and youngest just an infant. Lifeguard wouldn't let them in the pool because no adults were present to supervise. Mom wandered down about 15 minutes later and they were allowed to jump in the pool while she watched from the side. Then she just got up and wandered off with the baby, leaving 4 kids under 10 in the pool alone. She never came back. The lifeguard had to get them out of the pool after it a while. edited by Gummy on 09/09/2012

Nope, me neither. Accidents can happen in a split second. I watch mine closely at all times even with a lifeguard on duty.

No way. In the Ranches, children under 14 aren't allowed unsupervised in the community pools.

NEVER!!! If you are still wondering, just ask yourself if you could ever forgive yourself if something happened and your presence could have prevented it? Remember, your child may be a 'good swimmer' but drowning people tend to climb onto anything that is floating, including another swimmer. It's alarming that parents don't seem to realize the dangers of large (and small) unsupervised bodies of water. edited by cafe au lait on 09/09/2012
